2008 Screen Actors Guild Awards

Thanks to the cancelation of the Golden Globes ceremony, the hottest ticket in town was tonight’s Screen Actors Guild Awards. Without a picket line to cross, celebrities from TV and Film were allowed to celebrate - and commiserate - together for the first time in a long while.
For star-deprived fans, the SAG red carpet was also a treat for sore eyes. What were our favorite actresses wearing? What were the latest trends? Which dresses were going to be copied by Allen Schwartz tomorrow?
Unfortunately, the evening was not all about partying. The recent deaths of Suzanne Pleshette and Heath Ledger cast a somber tone on what would normally be a festive occasion. Thankfully, tonight was not about dissecting their lives, but merely about honoring them.
Meanwhile, the neglected winners of this month’s Globes were also hoping to get a share of the honors. If they were able to pull off another victory tonight, maybe they would have a chance to give the speech they already had written.
Well, without further ado, here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the fashionably late West Coast!

Take note. If you want to see your favorite actors and actresses lined up in their finest, this may be the gala to watch. Thanks to the relationship between the WGA and the Screen Actors Guild, the 14th Annual SAG Awards presentation will be allowed to go on as planned. (The same cannot currently be said of the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards.) So set your Tivo to TNT on January 27. This may be last time you get to see a group of actors celebrating together for quite some time.
This year’s television nominees are:
OUTSTANDING MALE PERFORMANCE - DRAMA SERIES
- James Gandolfini, The Sopranos (HBO)
- Michael C. Hall, Dexter (Showtime)
- Jon Hamm, Mad Men (AMC)
- Hugh Laurie, House (FOX)
- James Spader, Boston Legal (ABC)
OUTSTANDING FEMALE PERFORMANCE - DRAMA SERIES

So who cares if no one will be in attendance, the Golden Globe nominations must go on! (If the ceremony continues on as planned, it will air Sunday, January 13th on NBC.)
Here are the most notable omissions/additions in this year’s list of television honorees:
- Damages and Longford led the pack with 4 nominations each.
- James Gandolfini and The Sopranos were both left out of the races (though Edie Falco did get a nod).
- Three of the nominees for best TV Comedy (Entourage, Extras, Californation) came from pay-cable networks.
- Past faves (Desperates Housewives, Heroes, Ugly Betty) were nowhere to be found. (Though America Ferrera did earn a nod for her individual achievement.)
- HBO led the networks with 18 nominations; ABC was second with 11.

The 59th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards Coverage
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Action, Animation, Award Shows, Comedy, Drama, Mini Series, Prime Time, Reality, Sci-Fi/Horror, Specials, ABC, Bravo, Cable, CBS, FX, FOX, HBO, NBC, Showtime, 24, Amazing Race, The, American Idol, Daily Show, The, Dancing With The Stars, Desperate Housewives, Entourage, Extras, Family Guy, Grey’s Anatomy, Heroes, House, Lost, Medium, My Name Is Earl, Scrubs, Saturday Night Live, Survivor, The Office, The Sopranos, Top Chef,
The 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast. Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)? Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)? Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?
What a difference a year makes. Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now). Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best Comedy. Last year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien. This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest. Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama. This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).
I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight. We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…
Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Ugly Betty/Extras Actress Elopes
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, HBO, Extras, Gossip,
Ashley Jensen, who can be seen on both Ugly Betty and Extras, has tied the knot with her longtime boyfriend, Terence Beesley. The two eloped on January 22nd in a forest in Big Sur, California. Their dog, Barney, served as ring bearer. Jensen plays seamstress Christine on Ugly Betty and can also be seen as Maggie Jacobs, opposite Ricky Gervais on the HBO comedy Extras. I enjoyed her so much on the first season of Extras, and this season hasn’t disappointed yet either. She can really hold her own against Gervais, which is no small feat. I was thrilled to see her on Ugly Betty as well, although she doesn’t get a lot of screen time. Jensen commented to People magazine about the nuptials, saying it was a “beautiful, beautiful magical wedding…It was brilliant.”

Ricky Gervais Episode of The Office Coming Soon
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, BBC, NBC, Extras, The Office,
The November 30th episode of The Office will be a very special episode. Not ‘very special’ in the typical sense of sitcoms (you know, where someone has an eating disorder or discovers their best friend has a drug problem). No, this is special for fans of the original British version of The Office. The November 30th show will be written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the originators of the series. This is the first episode of the American version that the pair has written. In the episode, Steve Carell’s character (Michael) discovers that one of the new employees has a prison record. For those who were curious if the character of Andy from the Stamford office would continue on the series (played by Ed Helms), fear not—in this episode Andy will seek advice from Jim (John Krasinski) on how to pursue Pam (Jenna Fischer). Knowing Gervais and Merchant’s work on both The Office and Extras, the November 30th episode should be nothing short of genius.

Extras—Season Two Ends the Series
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, BBC, Cable, HBO, Extras,
It’s become the Ricky Gervais Syndrome. Following in the footsteps of his original series, The Office, which ended after two seasons, so too shall Extras suffer the same fate. Gervais’ excellent series Extras is now running the second season on British TV and is expected to air on HBO in 2007. According to Gervais, “At the moment, I don’t think there will be another one. [Co-creator Stephen Merchant] and I have always had this thing where we only like to do two series. It’s like The Office—people are always asking why we didn’t do any more, but we just wanted to leave people wanting more.” Huh, must be a British thing. Here in the states, we run TV series until people just can’t take any more.
So, enjoy it while you can. The great thing about Extras are the cameos, with season two featuring appearances by Orlando Bloom, David Bowie and Daniel Radcliffe. At the end of the first season, Gervais’ character, Andy Millman, was selling a sitcom to the BBC; season two picks up with Andy losing control over the show. Let the laughs begin.
