Despite a night of originals, the networks still felt the effects of the writers strike. In the end, CBS and ABC returned to old habits. The Eye network nabbed the most viewers while the Alphabet won the demos.
8pm
- Survivor: Micronesia (4.2/13 in 18-49) kicked off the night with 13 million.
- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (2.3/6) averaged 8.6 million over two hours.
- Ugly Betty (8.5 million, 2.5/8) had its lowest rating for an original episode.
- My Name is Earl (6.1 million, 2.3/7) slipped by 700,000; Scrubs (5.3 million, 2.4/7) suffered from increased competition.
- Smallville (3.6 million, 1.4/4) managed to increase by 100,000.

Despite a night of NBC originals, the network found itself in the middle of the pack. A special Thursday episode of American Idol helped FOX win the demos while CBS was first with the viewers.
8pm
- About 19.6 million were shocked to see Michael Johns booted from American Idol (6.8/19 in 18-49).
- Survivor (11.7 million, 3.8/11) suffered a bit thanks to that other reality show.
- My Name is Earl (3.0/9) kicked off NBC’s night with 7 million; 30 Rock (5.7 million, 2.7/7) fell a bit from there.
- A Desperate Housewives* repeat (1.1/3) had 4.3 million excited for a new episode.
- Smallville* (2.3 million, 0.8/2) was on track with last week.

MONDAY (4/7)
- Today (NBC, 10am): Kathie Lee Gifford returns to morning TV this week. And I thought the New Kids were getting old.
- Samantha Who? (ABC, 9:30pm): New episode. “Samantha has to move back into the apartment when she learns that she could be evicted for subletting it to Todd.” The girlfriend you hate gets amnesia and you get to keep her apartment. Todd has seriously been getting off easy so far.
- The Bachelor (ABC, 10pm): “It’s an afternoon of tennis and tea for six of the ladies.” I’ve seen what an afternoon of women’s tennis can look like on The Real Housewives of NYC. This won’t end pretty.
- Medium (NBC, 10pm): “Rosanna Arquette stars as an older seductress linked to the brutal murders of two younger men.” Maybe it’s best her relationship with Paul McCartney fizzled out.

Last night, FOX proved it could survive without help from Idol. The network ended up with the strongest demos of the evening while giving CBS a run for the viewers.
8pm
- Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (11.5 million, 3.7/10 in 18-49) outwitted its competition.
- Ugly Betty (9.5 million, 3.0/8) was down about 500,000 from last Thursday.
- A repeat of Without A Trace* (9.1 million, 1.8/5) gave CBS a nice start.
- My Name is Earl* (5.6 million, 2.4/7) was down about 2 mill; about 4.8 million reported to The Office* (2.2/6).
- Smallville* (2.7 million, 1.1/3) did a tad better than last week.
9pm
- A CSI* rerun (14.1 million, 3.5/9 in 18-49) was the most watched show of the night.

- Don’t Forget the Lyrics (8.8 million, 3.4/9) gained 2 million from one week ago.
- Grey’s Anatomy* (7.4 million, 2.5/6) killed off 10 mill.

MONDAY (1/14)
- Prison Break (FOX, 8pm): Season resumes. “Michael suffers the consequences of solitary confinement, Sona-style.” I hate to think we left him in there these past few months.
- Kyle XY (ABC Family, 8pm): Second season resumes. “Kyle returns to the Tragers to tell them truth about his existence.” Maybe ABC should consider stealing this show to fill their schedule. Otherwise, I’ll never get around to watching it.
- Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles (FOX, 9pm): Regular day and time. “John grows restless and sneaks out of the house to track down Charley Dixon.” Maybe they should have recast Edward Furlong. He would have filled this punk role perfectly.
- CSI: Miami (CBS, 10pm): Actress Elizabeth Berkeley guest-stars as Horatio’s ex and Kyle’s mother. Wouldn’t it have made more sense if she was on the regular CSI? Then they could have linked it back to her Showgirls years.

- CSI (18.1 million, 5.0/12 in 18-49) was the most watched show of the evening.
