Sunday Ratings: CBS and NBC Split Boring Night

NBC was the only network to bring all-new material the table last night. Unfortunately, all that effort only gave the Peacock network a win in the demos. (CBS was the winner with the viewers.)
8pm
- Million Dollar Password (8.3 million, 1.5/5 in 18-49) easily won its hour.
- NBC‘s coverage of the U.S. Olympic Trials (2.0/6) attracted 6.24 million gymnastics fans.
- A two-hour block of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition* (1.9/6) averaged 6.21 million.
- The Simpsons* hour (4.1 million, 1.9/6) was up 400,000.
- Everybody Hates Chris* (700,000, 0.2/1) and Aliens in America* (680,000, 0.2/1) pulled in similar numbers.

Sunday Ratings: Theater Awards Don’t Translate to TV

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Award Shows, Comedy, Prime Time, Specials, Sports, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Everybody Hates Chris, Family Guy, Saturday Night Live, Ratings,
Although Tony Awards telecasts have never been ratings goldmines, last night’s event had to compete with golf and basketball. Yesterday’s contest between the Celtics and the Lakers gave ABC another win in both the viewers and the demos.
8pm
- NBC‘s coverage of the U.S. Open (3.9/13 in-18-49) attracted 13.8 million golf fans.
- Jimmy Kimmel‘s special (8.2 million, 3.2/11) did 800,000 better than last Sunday; the NBA pre-game show (9.8 million, 4.0/12) grew by 1.9 million.
- Approximately 6.2 million theater lovers watched the 2008 Tony Awards (1.1/3).
- The Simpsons* (3.7 million, 1.8/6) was down by 400,000; King of the Hill* (3.6 million, 1.7/5) slipped by 300,000.
- Everybody Hates Chris* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) and Aliens in America* (1.1 million, 0.4/1) turned out similar numbers.

Simpsons’ Actors Return to Work

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Comedy, Prime Time, FOX, News, Renewals,
Even though they didn’t get the amount they were hoping for, The Simpsons’ cast has finally returned to work. A settlement reached this weekend capped off months of salary negotiations between the show’s talent and 20th Century Fox TV.
The comedy’s lead players - Dan Castellaneta, Julie Kavner, Hank Azaria, Yeardley Smith, Nancy Cartwright and Harry Shearer - were reportedly seeking a $500,000 per episode paycheck. (That would have been up from around $360,000.) What they eventually settled on was a number closer to $400K. Although Shearer was still in the process of finalizing his deal, his co-workers were expected at a table read scheduled for Monday.
The new contract will lock up the actors at the new rate for four years and give fans their 20th year with the Simpsons clan. (FOX would have to specifically request additional installments.) Unfortunately, 2008-09 will still see less episodes than originally planned; two half-hours were shaved off due to the delayed negotiations.

Sunday Ratings: Regis Philbin A Primetime Hit

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Animation, Comedy, Drama, Games, Prime Time, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Desperate Housewives, Everybody Hates Chris, Family Guy, Ratings,
Apparently Regis Philbin’s appeal is not limited to daytime hours. The host (and his Million Dollar Password) helped CBS win the viewers last night. Meanwhile, NBC - the only other network with originals yesterday - placed first in the demos.
8pm
- Million Dollar Password (2.2/7 in 18-49) engaged 10.7 million.
- A two-hour Most Outrageous Moments block (1.6/5) averaged 5.4 million.
- Extreme Makeover: Home Edition* (1.4/5) nailed down 5 million.
- The Simpsons* (2.0/7) kept 4.5 million amused; King of the Hill* (1.9/6) did the same for 4 million.
- Everybody Hates Chris* (920,000, 0.3/1) and Aliens in America* (880,000, 0.3/1) tied in the demos.
