Three New Back-to-Back Episodes of Saturday Night Live

Matthew FoxIf you’re wondering when there is going to be another new episode of Saturday Night Live, wonder no more. December is going to deliver the gift of three new episodes with some promising guest hosts. Kicking off the month on December 2nd, Lost star Matthew Fox hosts with Tenacious D as the musical guest. Predictions on whether or not there will be a Lost sketch? On December 9th, Annette Bening will host with musical guest Gwen Stefani, who is promoting her second solo album. I’m looking forward to Bening’s debut appearance—she really has impeccable timing and it will be interesting to see what they throw at her. And, to round out the month, the December 16th episode will feature Justin Timberlake as both host and musical guest. Timberlake appeared in 2003 and did a surprisingly good job—he is really up for just about anything and it’s a lot of fun to watch him give it his all.

I know, I know, SNL can often fail to please… but that hasn’t stopped me from watching it ever since I was a kid waaaay back when. For all the mediocre sketches, there are always bound to be gems. It’s a television institution, for goodness sake.

30 Rock Gets Additional Scripts Ordered

30 RockGreat news, 30 Rock fans! NBC has ordered additional scripts of the show, so here’s hoping we’ll get to see a little more of that Alec Baldwin and Tina Fey magic. The recent move to Thursday nights was not too eventful, ratings-wise, so the fate of this little comedy is still up in the air. Hey, it’s up against Grey’s Anatomy—but I’m telling you, this show is funny. It’s got the goods. What does Grey‘s have anyway? OK, believe it or not, I’m one of the few people that doesn’t watch Grey‘s. And come this Thursday, I will be completely devoted to NBC’s Thursday night block of comedy: My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs and 30 Rock. The return of Must-See TV? Well, I know I’ll be there!

30 Rock a Ratings Dud on New Night

30 Rock Oh man, I was hoping that moving 30 Rock to Thursday night would give it a little kick in the ratings pants. Quite the contrary, actually, as 30 Rock did even worse than in its previous timeslot. Last night’s show aired from 9:20 through 10:00 p.m., a result of the “supersize” Thursday night. Despite its lead-in by The Office, 30 Rock didn’t manage to maintain much of that audience. The show only had 5.2 million viewers on board. Previously, 30 Rock aired in the wasteland of Wednesday evening, paired with the now cancelled Twenty Good Years. In that time slot, they were drawing 6.3 million viewers at 8:00 p.m. I know there’s a little somethin’ out there called Grey’s Anatomy that is definitely going to pull viewers from 30 Rock, so we’ll see if the show stays put on Thursdays or gets moved elsewhere. Or, worse yet, gets cancelled (gulp). Come on folks, show it some love!

Scrubs Celebration and Spoilers to Boot!

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, NBC, Scrubs,

Scrubs The cast of Scrubs gathered in Los Angeles to celebrate their sixth season—starting on November 30th on NBC. Access Hollywood gave a rundown of the celebration, as well as some details that the cast spilled about the upcoming season. Tidbits include:

  • Episode 6 will feature the first all musical endeavor, airing in January 2007.
  • Cameos will include Blue Man Group (which we reported yesterday).
  • While guest stars will be fewer this season, the cast hopes to land Ricky Gervais and Mackenzie Crook (who played Gareth on the British Office).
  • Judy Reyes (Nurse Carla) revealed that she and Turk (Donald Faison) will have some rough times ahead of them, saying,  “I don’t want to give too much away, because it’s gonna be airing soon. She’s having the baby and dealing with real life issues that women deal with when they have their children. And [she’s] dealing the emotional turmoil of actually bearing a child and what real women deal with and the sadness of dealing with child birth and the turmoil.”

Blue Man Group to Appear on Scrubs

Blue Man GroupFirst, let me just say that I can barely contain myself about the return of Scrubs. It’s been way too long of a wait for diehard fans, but we have been filling the void with the excellent re-runs on Comedy Central. This show is just too good, and with rumors that this may be its final season, we need to hang on to every excellent little morsel that this show delivers. Case in point, TV Squad is reporting that Blue Man Group will make a special appearance on the season premiere—which airs November 30th at 9:00 p.m. In the episode, J.D. (Zach Braff) will join the blue percussion dudes on stage at The Venetian Resort Hotel and Casino. This does bring to mind the great gag that Arrested Development had with Tobias (David Cross) trying to become a member of the group. Tune in—November 30th is going to be a great night—The Office, My Name is Earl, Scrubs and 30 Rock! Of course, there’s that little show, Grey’s Anatomy, that’s likely to pull a viewer or two away from Scrubs...

Surprise! Friday Night Lights Gets Full Order

Friday Night Lights The media has been buzzing for weeks about the fate of NBC’s Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Friday Night Lights, with most saying that one or both would get the axe. We recently reported that Studio 60 got a full season order, so it seemed that the low rated Friday Night Lights would be taking the fall. Good news, Lights fans—NBC is taking a chance on the football drama by also giving it a full season order. The struggling show has not done particularly well in its Tuesday at 8:00 p.m. slot, so NBC tried it in the Studio 60 time (Monday at 10:00 p.m.) to see if it would do any better. The series has only averaged about 6.7 million viewers. Kevin Reilly, NBC Entertainment president, said of the news, “We’re proud to reward an authentic, poignant series like Friday Night Lights with a full-season order, demonstrating our confidence in its appeal and quality.”

Now NBC will be revamping its schedule to better showcase Friday Night Lights. No official word yet on what the new schedule will look like, but the network will be moving Friday Night Lights out of its current Tuesday night spot (to spare it from the return of American Idol). The new schedule will begin in January.

Ricky Gervais Episode of The Office Coming Soon

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Prime Time, BBC, NBC, Extras, The Office,

Ricky Gervais The November 30th episode of The Office will be a very special episode. Not ‘very special’ in the typical sense of sitcoms (you know, where someone has an eating disorder or discovers their best friend has a drug problem). No, this is special for fans of the original British version of The Office. The November 30th show will be written by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, the originators of the series. This is the first episode of the American version that the pair has written. In the episode, Steve Carell’s character (Michael) discovers that one of the new employees has a prison record. For those who were curious if the character of Andy from the Stamford office would continue on the series (played by Ed Helms), fear not—in this episode Andy will seek advice from Jim (John Krasinski) on how to pursue Pam (Jenna Fischer). Knowing Gervais and Merchant’s work on both The Office and Extras, the November 30th episode should be nothing short of genius.

Studio 60 Gets the Full Order

Studio 60Seems NBC is taking pity on the ratings-impaired series Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. While the show hasn’t been living up to expectations in terms of viewership, the network has extended the show for the full season. Time will tell if the show gains momentum—and numbers. It’s hard to believe that it could see an increase in ratings, since most people who jumped ship on the series are unlikely to dive back in if they’ve missed a number of episodes. NBC Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly said of the full season order, “I am pleased to show our support for this outstanding and ambitious effort from executive producers Aaron Sorkin and Thomas Schlamme. From the start, they have delivered the superb show that we wanted. The critical support has been rock-solid and there is a passionate core audience. We can’t wait for what’s going to come in the remainder of the season.” The show had seemed to be in jeopardy of cancellation, but somehow dodged the bullet. While the show started strong with 13 million viewers, it has dropped to about 8 million per episode. The show does, however, draw the highest concentration of folks with incomes of $75,000 or more.

Happy Hour and Twenty Good Years Cancelled

Happy Hour Two sitcoms on the “critical” list, nearing cancellation, have officially been given the axe. Fox’s Happy Hour has been removed from the schedule due to low ratings. The comedy has ranked fifth for viewers 18-to-49 during its timeslot on Thursdays. The ailing ‘Til Death is still on the roster.

NBC’s Twenty Good Years has also been moved off of the schedule—you may recall a couple of weeks back when NBC announced their new Thursday night line up with nary a mention of the fate of Twenty Good Years. The sitcom aired on Wednesdays along with 30 Rock—with 30 Rock making an upcoming move to Thursday nights on November 16th. Twenty Good Years has been yanked and a two-hour episode of The Biggest Loser will air in its place on November 8th (from 8 - 10 p.m.).

The OfficeThis week, fans of The Office will get an extra treat online—a “producer’s cut” of the episode airing on November 9th. This is the first time that this type of special feature has been available online. With additional scenes and footage that won’t air on the Thursday broadcast, viewers can get a little somethin’ somethin’ that is usually reserved only for DVD extra features. The “web-exclusive event” will be available to viewers following the 8:30 airing of The Office, so log on to NBC.com at 9:00 p.m. Executive vice president NBC digital entertainment and new media, Vivi Zigler, said of the event: “This is a first-of-its-kind and a real bonus for fans of The Office. It’s also a natural for this show which has continually pushed the envelope in the digital landscape. We’re seeing an incredible audience reaction to the evolving digital extensions of our programming and anticipate this being one of their favorites.”

If you haven’t seen promos for this week’s show—Jan (Melora Hardin) informs Michael (Steve Carell) that his branch of Dunder Mifflin (the Scranton office) will be shutting down. You can bet that Michael will do his best to keep staff morale going, which always leads to the best Michael moments
