On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

Kathleen York Coming soon to Wisteria Lane—a couple of new neighbors. Well, let’s hope they make for a better storyline than the Applewhites. The third season of Desperate Housewives kicks off this Sunday, and has added a couple of recurring players to the roster. Kathleen York will come on board as “a beautiful redhead mystery woman,” according to a Housewives source. Matt Roth will play the new owner of Paul Young’s home. Lynette becomes fast friends with him after he comes to her aid in a “tense situation.”

Roth was on a number of episodes of Roseanne, as well as in the film Blink, and made appearances on Grey’s Anatomy and Crossing Jordan, among others. He is married to Roseanne cast member Laurie Metcalf—who, interestingly enough, will also show up on Desperate Housewives this season.

Kathleen York has appeared on a number of series, including The West Wing and The O.C. Her song, “In the Deep,” from the movie Crash, earned an Academy Award nomination.

TV A recent Nielsen Media Research study found that the average American home has more TV sets than people. The average number of people per home is 2.55, while the number of TVs averages 2.73. The availability of flat-screen TVs impacts the results, since it’s easier than ever to put sets most anywhere.

The research shows that half of American homes have three or more TVs, with 19 percent having just one. Compared to 1975, the number of single sets per home was 57 percent and having three or more was a minority—just 11 percent.

Nielsen also reports that the average person watches four hours and 35 minutes of TV per day. What are people watching? The ratings over the years have shown a lot of change with the multitude of channels available, so the the big networks’ ratings have shown a steady decline.

SmithI was undecided about whether I wanted to tune into the new drama on CBS called Smith starring Ray Liotta and a noteworthy ensemble cast, but made the decision to give it a chance largely due to my female insensibility; basing my decision merely on the fact that the cast included one Simon Baker, the hunky Aussie that I had just “fell in love” with (if I were not already married to my wonderful husband), while watching a silly romantic comedy a few weeks back entitled Something New . Of course that is not what I told my husband. I just asked if he wanted to watch with me, in which case he did since he enjoyed Ray Liotta’s performance in Goodfellas.

Lukas Rossi You may recall that the name Supernova was already owned by another band, and so the courts ordered the band from the show Rock Star: Supernova to stop using the same name. Showing a complete lack of originality or creativity, the band has settled on their new name—Rock Star Supernova. I know, I know, it’s a subtle difference, what with the removal of the colon and all. Seems that’s all that Tommy Lee, Jason Newsted, Gilby Clarke and their new frontman Lukas Rossi could muster. So, rather than being called Supernova, it’s now Rockstar Supernova. Catchy, no? Well, I guess there are kookier names out there (Death Cab for Cutie comes to mind), but still I would have expected Gilby with his super songwriting abilities to have crafted something a little more interesting. For those itching to have the Rockstar Supernova album, you’ll have to settle for the two songs available on Yahoo Music. They won’t be recording their album until later this year.

Rock Star Lukas RossiOh man, another disappointing reality show finale for me. I’m sure not everyone feels the same way as me about who was crowned the winner of Rockstar: Supernova since there was much fan support for him. The finale had Magni, Lukas, Toby and Dilana fighting it out for the lead singer job. First cut was Magni (ouch), but my guy Toby was still in the running, so I was happy. Then, the unthinkable—Toby got the axe. What?! I couldn’t even believe that Dilana and Lukas were standing there as the final two contenders. I haven’t been a fan of either of them from the beginning—Dilana is a touch scary with her voice sounding like she’s eaten a bag of glass prior to taking the stage, and Lukas had me questioning “What is he singing? I can’t understand a word.” Toby seemed to me to be a great match with the boys of the band because of his easy-going attitude and his ability to get the crowd hyped up. And he’s cute, so that helps. If nothing else, the exposure will get him his own record deal and we’ll be seeing him again. Besides, who knows how long the Rockstar band will even last.

On to other Rockstar news, you may recall that we reported that there already is a band called Supernova and the fate of the Rockstar band taking on the same name was questionable. Well, a judge ruled that the Rockstar boys will have to choose another name. You may have noticed last night that host Brooke Burke made no mention of the name Supernova when introducing the band with new front-man Lukas Rossi. Let me know what you thought of the outcome. Was it just me, or did the crowd seem a bit bored when Lukas started singing with the band? Don’t hate me Lukas fans—he’s just not my cup o’tea.

Big Brother 7: All-Stars The finale of Big Brother 7: All-Stars aired last night—and it came down to two finalists I could have cared less about. I committed to the whole season this summer… a rigorous schedule of three episodes each week and countless hours spent following live feeds online. What a tremendous waste—to get to the final two and not care either way who won it. But, since I had already put in so much of my time, I had to see how it would all shake out. And more importantly, who would win the America’s Choice of $25,000.

After questioning from the jury, a lame live show had the jurors inserting the key of their chosen winner (Mike or Erika) into the key contraption-thingy. With little fanfare, Mike won by a landslide, emerging from the Big Brother house to take the prize. Ho-hum. Let’s get on to the interesting stuff—who would win America’s Choice? Of course, Janelle was the winner, so at least something interesting happened during the finale. It would have been a far more interesting show had Janelle and Dr. Will made it to final two, but those are the breaks. As for me, I think that was the last Big Brother I’ll watch.

Survivor logo If you are on the fence about whether or not to watch the new season of Survivor because of its racial experiment, you’re not alone. The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) opposes the concept of splitting the teams by race, but will “reserve judgment until the reality-TV show actually airs.”

“Concerning the new season of Survivor, whether we like the concept or not—and for the record, we do not—it is premature to judge the show purely on conjecture,” according to a statement from the NAACP. “We will judge the show on what we see, and we will monitor the public response.”

In response, executive producer Mark Burnett said, “I agree with the NAACP in that ‘there is no escaping the reality that race is a complex and emotional issue in America, one we are still reluctant to confront and address,’ and I am happy that they have reserved judgment until they watch the series. I would encourage anyone to follow this lead and watch at least a few episodes to get a clear picture of how the dynamic will play out.”

The new season of Survivor: Cook Islands begins on Thursday at 8 p.m. The 20 contestants will be divided into the following groups: black, white, Hispanic and Asian.

Amazing RaceThings are starting to kick into high-gear now with the introduction of three high-profile reality shows and the finales of several others:

SUNDAY
Sunday Night Football (7pm EST on NBC):  TV sales will increase once women realize that football season will contend with Desperate Housewives.
FOX Comedies (starting @ 8pm):  Those men not already watching football—and/or live on the West Coast—will have a line-up of father-oriented comedies to watch:  The Simpsons, American Dad, Family Guy and The War at Home.

MONDAY
9/11 Anniversary (various):  Most of the networks will choose to pay tribute on the 5-year anniversary.  Other programming will most likely be interrupted by a scheduled Pres. Bush speech at 9pm EST.

TUESDAY
Big Brother (8pm on CBS):  The finale between Mike Boogie and Erika.  Sadly, someone has to be chosen the winner.  Maybe they can just have each other.
Dancing with the Stars (8pm on ABC):  The 2-hour debut of the ABC powerhouse.  Am I the only one who believes that Mario Lopez still deserves some karmic embarrassment for cheating on Ali Landry before their wedding?

WEDNESDAY
Today Show (NBC):  The debut of Meredith Vieira.  I’m betting she’s happy to have a little more testosterone in her life.
Rock Star: Supernova (8pm on CBS):  The winner will be announced.  If Dilana doesn’t win, I’ll be boycotting CBS.

THURSDAY
Survivor:  Cook Islands (8pm on CBS):  My 24-hour boycott of CBS will have ended when I return to watch this controversial racial experiment.  Being 1/2 Asian, 1/2 Hispanic…I’m not sure which team I will root for.  I just know that if those two tribes merge, the other groups could be in a world of hurt.

SUNDAY (9/17)
The Amazing Race 10 (8:30pm on CBS):  Twelve teams of two will depart from Seattle and travel around the world.  Twelve teams of two will also be that much closer to Phil Keoghan than I will ever be.
