Emmy AwardsThe 59th Annual Emmy Awards has not even started, yet I’m already sensing sensing a weird vibe about tonight’s telecast.  Will the show be a celebration of those young and new (e.g. Heroes)?  Will it be a tribute to those bowing out (James Gandolfini and crew)?  Or will performer Kanye West somehow manage to cast a controversial shadow over the rest of the ceremony?

What a difference a year makes.  Twelve months ago, we were still handing out trophies to stars from Will & Grace and The West Wing (those shows feel so five-years ago now).  Today, we welcome a new crop of nominees including Ugly Betty and 30 Rock for Best ComedyLast year, we were entertained by an always-hilarious Conan O’Brien.  This year, we are threatened by a song and dance number from this year’s host, Ryan Seacrest.  Last August, 24 snagged the award for Best Drama.  This September, it’s not even nominated (yet somehow Boston Legal is).

I think it would be safe to assume the voters would predictably (and respectfully) shower The Sopranos with honors, but I’ll still be crossing my fingers for an upset sometime tonight.  We’ll need something to talk about tomorrow…

Here’s the play-by-play of tonight’s events coming to you from the neglected West Coast!

Family Guy

Starting today, you can follow the adventures of Peter, Lois, Stewie and the rest of the Griffin family conveniently through your Xbox 360.  Although owners of the system have been able to purchase movies and TV shows for some time now, is the first series to be made available through the Xbox Live Video Marketplace.  This is also the first time fans of Family have been able to digitially download and own the show.

Seasons 1 & 2 are currently available but other seasons will soon follow.

South Park image has announced a $75 million deal with Trey Parker and Matt Stone, creators of the animated hit . Through the terms of the deal, three more 14-episode seasons of South Park will come to the cable channel. This will carry the series through 2011, marking a decade and a half of those four foully potty-mouthed tikes. Now that the animated cable show has scored such a big payout, which includes a share of digital revenues, questions are being raised. Will other big ratings-grabbers demand similar payouts, and a stake in Web share? Meanwhile, Comedy Central is in negotiations with Jon Stewart, beloved host of The Daily Show. Stewart’s current contract expires in 2008.

The Simpsons I think it was just last week when I was ever-so giddy over the news of an appearance by Jerry Seinfeld on 30 Rock. Now I’m over the moon about the upcoming stars set to lend their voices to The Simpsons this fall. While The Simpsons has always managed to grab its fair share of celebrity voices, for some reason, this looks like a banner year to me. I have to admit (hanging my head in shame), that my viewership of The Simpsons has dwindled to the occasional viewing, but I will have to clear my plate come fall for a chance to hear the following guest stars: Jon Stewart, Jack Black, Stephen Colbert, Lionel Richie, Steve Buscemi, Matt Dillon, Kurt Loder, Beverly D’Angelo, Maya Rudolph and Topher Grace. Newsman Dan Rather, tenor Placido Domingo, and the return of Kelsey Grammer as Sideshow Bob are certain to offer highlights too. Most interesting to me is the appearance by Jack Black on October 7, where his character opens a new comic book store to rival the existing shop helmed by Comic Book Guy. Good times ahead, for sure. It’s little news like this that keeps me going through the slump of summer programming.
