Two games will hit Xbox Live Arcade tomorrow, both of which are classics, in a way. The first is Super Contra, something I’ve been waiting a long time for, since the original Contra release was the coin-op arcade version, as opposed to the superior NES one. But Super Contra was arguable the pinnacle of the series, and with online co-op and achievements, you better pick it up.
The other title is a bit of mixed bag. Wing Commander Arena is the rebirth of the classic Wing Commander franchise, which was phenomenal back in the day (and remains such in the hearts of many). Arena is going in a different direction, and despite what you might expect after seeing screenshots from the game, it’s in fact not 3D – you can’t move up or down; only horizontally. So even though you’re in space you’re confined to a single plane. Lame. On the plus-side, Arena is the first Arcade game to feature 16-player Xbox Live multiplayer, so that might justify an 800 Microsoft Point purchase.

Prepare Your Pocketbook, Full Rock Band Set To Cost $200
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Accessories, Internet, Music, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360,
Well lookee here, it seems we were right. If you want the full Rock Band experience, it looks like you WILL be paying almost as much as a new console (well, almost as much as a new Wii at least). Pre-orders for Rock Band have begun to be listed on Amazon.com, and the going rate for the game + microphone, drum set and guitar looks to be $199.99.
Of course, you can always purchase just one or two of the peripherals, and then form a band online. But you don’t want to be that sorry-ass gamer that doesn’t have all the peripherals when your friends come over to jam, now do ya? The solutions, of course, are 4-fold. It looks like it’s either time to 1) start saving, 2) start picking your favorite instrument, 3) start finding some online friends, or 4) start getting rid of some real-world ones.
Rock Band will release for the Xbox 360 and PS3 on 11/20/07.

Virtual Console 7/23: Kirby, Devil’s Crush, And Shining Force

Before you get excited, it’s not the good Kirby. (Well, not what I’d consider good, at least.) The SNES’ Kirby’s Dream Course is the big name title this week, and a week where a Kirby-themed golf game is headliner isn’t really a good week for the Virtual Console. Nevertheless, you’ll also be able to pick up Devil’s Crush, a pinball game and the RPG Shining Force, which may sound familiar because it received a remake on the Game Boy Advance in 2004.
Details after the break.

Escape from Bug Island for Wii Out This Week
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Adventure, Eidos, Special Editions, Wii,
Ah, Escape from Bug Island... everybody’s favorite whipping boy. Somehow, with E3 still fresh in our minds and lots of new downloadable content available on all 3 consoles, we forgot about you! How could we! Well, Bug Island, here’s your moment to shine. Go ahead, tell the crowd about your stunnig gameplay, your creepy, scary story, your amazing showing during playtests. What’s that, little guy? You don’t have any of those? Oh, I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to bring that up. Don’t cry…
But buck up little camper… you’ll show them! You’ll actually be released this week, on July 24th! Don’t worry… I’m sure you’ll have at least a FEW pre-orders, and I’m sure there are a number of insect-obsessed kids out there that would love to be your friend. But really, I gotta be honest, Bug Island, you’re going to have to work hard to get people to notice you… to get people to recognize what a thoroughly decent game you might be. Otherwise, it’s going to be off to the bargain bin with you, and we don’t want that to happen now do we. Go get’em tiger!

The Darkness for Xbox 360 Demo Impressions
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Action, First Person Shooters, Xbox 360,
![The Darkness Logo]({filedir_4}the_darkness.jpg)
The Darkness tries to add something entirely new to the FPS genre, and in some ways, it succeeds. In other ways, it totally fails - at least from what we’ve seen so far. In much the same way that Overlord sought to re-invigorate the, well, the Pikmin genre, The Darkness seeks to bring something new to the FPS genre by making you the bad guy. In the game, you play as a mobster, Jackie Estacado, who’s been screwed-over one time too many by his associates. Jackie dies, and he’s re-incarnated as a dark-tentacle weilding “thing” (“The Darknes”), which he can use to exact revenge on the people who messed with him.

The Sarcastic Gamer on Wii Fit
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Accessories, Culture, Wii,
Don’t get me wrong, the Wii Fit looks like a fun idea. I think it’ll be great for workouts, and may have some really cool applications in games like snowboarding or skateboarding. Still, you may look like a tool using it, as Sarcastic Gamer makes clear. See above, their parody video for the Wii Fit, which had me laughing out loud at quite a few moments.

Far Cry 2 Coming, Sayeth Ubisoft
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Electronic Arts, First Person Shooters, PC, Ubisoft,
![Far Cry 2 logo]({filedir_4}farcry2_logo_thumb.jpg)
Ubisoft doesn’t think you should be getting too excited about Crysis. According to them, Far Cry 2 is going to be the new hawtness. In fact, they’re pretty confident that Far Cry 2 is going to be the game to raise the bar in the FPS arena:
“Far Cry marked the beginning of a new era for shooters. An era of gorgeous graphics and of advanced artificial intelligence,” declared John Parkes, EMEA marketing director at Ubisoft. “We are confident that Far Cry 2 will have the same impact again on the FPS genre landscape.”
Never mind the fact that Far Cry 2 isn’t being developed by Crytek, or that they don’t have shiny screenshots to show off. It’s just going to be awesome. Plus, you’ll be able to look forward to the ports! Far Cry 2: Instinctual Predation - Evolution of Vengeance coming soon to the the PS2, Wii, Gamecube, Xbox, GBA, and your cell phone.
Snarkiness aside, the game will be developed by Ubisoft’s Montreal Studios who also worked on Splinter Cell and the Prince of Persia series, so we can probably expect some pretty good things. From the look of the preview website, it looks like the game may take place in the African savannah, but we’ll have to wait for Ubi to give us any more tidbits of info (such as platforms, release dates, and all that other important stuff).

Rockstar Loves Nintendo, Brings Bully and Table Tennis Wii-ward
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Adventure, Take2, Wii,
Well, it seems as if the constant hubbub over Manhunt 2 won’t be keeping Rockstar away from the Wii. Just recently, Rockstar has announced that they will be bringing Bully (formerly PS2 exclusive) and Table Tennis (formerly 360 exclusive) to the Wii. It seems the company has been amping up support for the little white box. Here’s hoping that these won’t be quick-n-dirty money-printing ports from Rockstar - I’ve come to expect quality from these guys.
Bully will be hitting the Wii (and the 360, by the way!) in a new “Scholarship Edition” that features new bonus content, as yet unspecified. Look for it to drop this winter.

Did Microsoft’s Jeff Bell Really Insult A Message Board User?
![](http://assets.gearlive.com/images/member_photos/photo_11521.jpg)
Posted by Chris Pereira Categories: Corporate News, Internet, Microsoft,
![Jeff Bell NeoGAF private message]({filedir_4}jeffbell_neogaf_pm.jpg)
Answer: We don’t know. But according to a story on 1UP, there’s a strong possibility that Microsoft corporate VP of global marketing Jeff Bell sent a private message to a user on the NeoGAF forums asking, “And your contribution to society is….what?” The user who received the message goes by the name “a Master Ninja,” and as you can see in the image above, “bell801” is the user who sent the message.
a Master Ninja was extremely critical of Jeff Bell’s presentation at the Microsoft press conference last week at E3 (who wasn’t – the man was just dull. Sorry, fact of life) on the forums. After posting a thread on NeoGAF about the PM, users have found a YouTube video where Bell says that his GamerTag is “BigDaddy801,” and in an interview with TriXie of Xbox.com, Bell explains the significance of the number 801.
It could still be a sham, but a moderator at NeoGAF confirmed to 1UP that the account is registered to Jeff Bell. An official response from Microsoft has not yet been forthcoming, but this would certainly be interesting to see. We know big name developers such as David Jaffe frequent message boards and forums, but as 1UP points out, seeing an executive knock a message board poster would certainly be a new one.
More as it becomes available.
