On Gear Live: Apple’s $400,000,000 Secret to Saving the Planet

Megan Mullally Never fear, Megan Mullally fans—she’s coming back to the small screen! Don’t worry, her short lived talk show didn’t get renewed, but she will be making a guest appearance on Boston Legal. She’s only scheduled to appear on one episode, but this should give fans enough to hold them over until her next acting gig. She will appear later this season as an ex-girlfriend and former co-worker of Alan Shore (James Spader). No word yet on when it will air, but it’s certain that the dynamic between her, Shatner and Spader will be fantastic. And get this, ABC says that her character, Renata Hall, will make a grand entrance, “as she dashes down the courthouse hallway wearing a bloody wedding gown, carrying a bloody pair of scissors and proclaiming her innocence in the murder of her betrothed.” Classy. Mullally, of course is famous for playing Karen Walker on Will & Grace, for which she won two Emmys. She was also nominated five other times.

Robyn TroupAnyone who knows me has probably heard me rail on the “parade of mediocrity” that is the audition process for American Idol. I’m just the kind of guy that thinks that to get your fifteen minutes of fame, you must be able to do something significant to contribute to ... something. Looking like a jackass and not being able to sing don’t count.

But that’s neither here nor there. Tomorrow starts the first round of hopefuls that were talented enough to get to the Hollywood stage of the competition, and this is normally where I start paying attention to the show. Idol has the ability to make stars out of even non-winners, and in fact, not winning could end up being a major opportunity for you. Kelly Clarkson notwithstanding, some of the biggest names to come out of Idol are Jennifer Hudson and her meteoric rise to capture a Golden Globe and probably an Oscar, and Season 5 finalist Chris Daughtry who’s debut album just went platinum (and is a great rock album).

Which led me to have an interesting conversation with my wife last night. How is it that the audience has been getting it so wrong, since they are the ones making this decision? The voting should be roughly analogous to how sales should go, right? And yet, winner Ruben Studdard falters while Clay Aiken makes out like a bandit. What’s going on?

Survivor logo Hey, not too shabby for an aging franchise. The latest installment of SurvivorSurvivor: Fiji—earned almost 17 million viewers on its Thursday debut. This is the series’ fourteenth season, and it certainly doesn’t seem to be losing any steam. And this comes despite any new gimmicks (like the social experiment of last season). Survivor: Fiji took the top spot for 8:00 - 9:00 p.m. So, that means it beat out Ugly Betty by a fair amount—9% for households, 35% for viewers 25-54, 23% for 18-49 year-olds, and 17% total viewers. Similarly, it bested NBC’s showing of My Name is Earl and The Office, earning 35% more of the adults ages 18-49. Despite the significant viewership, it did fall short in one category: the 18-34 demographic, where it came in third, following Ugly Betty and Earl/The Office. I am one of the few who did not watch the latest installment. My loyalty lies with Earl and The Office, and quite frankly, I’ve grown tired of Survivor‘s concept and host.

Jeff FoxworthyTV Envy recently reported on an upcoming game show from Mark Burnett, testing the smarts of contestants on grade school level questions. At that time, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader did not have a host attached. Look no further folks, because Jeff Foxworthy will be taking on the job. The comedian, who became popular for his “You Might be a Redneck” jokes, may be just the quirky host this new game show concept needs. The Fox show will begin on Tuesday, February 27th, following American Idol. I’m looking forward to this because, since I’m not a huge game show fan, I can appreciate the fun of seeing how well people retain that elementary school knowledge. I know I, for one, have emptied most of that information out of my head. I have to start brushing up on this stuff before my first grade son figures out that he knows more than me! The topics that contestants will be quizzed on include math, history, geography and science. They are able to get help, but need to call on real grade-school kids for their lifeline.

Shane WestThe FOX network has announced upcoming pilots, and with the news comes casting details. First up is a drama, called Supreme Courtships, starring Shane West. West can currently be seen on E.R. and was a cast member of ABC’s Once and Again. Of course, no word on whether or not West will stay on E.R. With a name like Supreme Courtships, you can kind of guess the subject matter—Supreme Court clerks and their relationships.

FOX also announced a new comedy, called The Rules of Starting Over, with Craig Bierko and Rashida Jones. The comedy will look at the lives of friends who are jumping back into dating following their divorces. Jones is currently on The Office, and there has been a lot of speculation about how long her role as Jim’s girlfriend will continue. Perhaps her signing on to a new pilot is good news for Pam and Jim fans?

Anna Nicole Smith Soon after news broke that Anna Nicole Smith had collapsed in a Florida hotel, it was reported that the tabloid favorite had died. Smith, who was born Vickie Lynn Hogan, first became famous for her Guess jeans ads and Playboy centerfold spread. Later, she provided a steady stream of tabloid material when she married an 89-year-old oil tycoon. She remained in the spotlight as the legal battle for his fortune continued. At one point, she had her own reality show on E! and continued to appear in tabloids for her growing waistline. The recent death of her 20-year-old son, birth of her new daughter, and question over the father of her child all contributed a great deal of stress to the bubbly blond. Just days ago, it was announced that Smith would be sued for her role as spokeswoman for the TrimSpa weight-loss supplement. She was found in her hotel room at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel this afternoon, and passed away shortly thereafter. The cause of death is under investigation, with an autopsy scheduled for Friday.

Paula Abdul Oh Paula, what trouble have you gotten into now? Paula Abdul has certainly gotten her fair share of attention lately—unfortunately, it’s not for anything too positive. Her wacky comments and slurred speech on American Idol, as well as her less-than-coherent television interview have all brought criticisms. Now add another kookoo item to the list: Abdul is being sued by a production company, saying that she took their reality concept and shopped it elsewhere. The company was to produce a reality series about her life, called Hey Paula!. You may recall that a series of the very same name is expected to air on Bravo. The series is a behind-the-scenes look at Abdul, both personally and professionally. In the lawsuit, the production company is seeking compensation and damages, but they are also fighting to prohibit the show from being aired by anyone. Perhaps now the series will never see the light of day?

Janeane GarofaloMark-Paul Gosselaar, who will always be Zach from Saved by the Bell to me, has signed on for a new CBS drama. The series, which so far is untitled, centers around Los Angeles public defenders. Gosselaar will play the lead role, as a young attorney who chooses to be a public defender rather than running for Congress. Janeane Garofalo is on board as well, although it’s less clear what her role will be. The drama comes from Numbers creator, Barry Schindel. To Gosselaar’s credit, he has had a steady career, most recently with roles on NYPD Blue and Commander in Chief. I’m not one for legal dramas, but I’m glad to see Garofalo back on television. I’d rather see her take on a comedic role, but I’ll settle for Janeane any way I can get her.

Sarah Silverman Way to go, Sarah Silverman. Her show, The Sarah Silverman Program was a ratings winner for Comedy Central. The show debuted last Thursday, bringing in about 1.8 million viewers and was the most watched primetime cable show for viewers ages 18-49. This marks the biggest debut for an original program on Comedy Central since Drawn Together debuted in 2004. I saw Silverman’s show and really enjoyed it. I’ve read some criticism of her online that says her schtick is getting old, but isn’t that what comedians do? I don’t find everything she says side-splittingly (is that a word?) funny, but I always like to see what crazy thing she’ll say next. In most cases, I can’t even believe the things coming out of her mouth—but that’s the point, I suppose. Her turn as a regular on Crank Yankers was always a highlight of the show. Check out The Sarah Silverman Program on Thursday at 10:30 p.m. It’s definitely worth a look.

Kirstie Alley Kirstie Alley has been gracing the TV quite a lot, what with her Showtime series Fat Actress, the Jenny Craig ads, and the appearance on Oprah. This time, however, she’s back on network television, playing the lead in The Minister of Divine, a British remake of the comedy The Vicar of Dibley. I just love the word “vicar,” and I don’t really know why, other than it just sounds funny when the Brits say it. So, she plays a former rebel who comes back to her hometown—as a minister. I’m looking forward to Alley’s return to TV. While I didn’t enjoy Veronica’s Closet, Fat Actress was a little gem. And anyone who can parade their weight loss on Oprah has more than their fair share of fans, no doubt.
