New Kids on the Block Perform Today Show Concert
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Daytime, Music, NBC, Video,
After nearly 15 years apart (they last performed on stage in 1994), the New Kids on the Block kicked off their reunion tour this morning in a very rainy New York. Nevertheless, some eager fans waited nearly two days to get in line for the mini-concert.
During their Today show appearance, the group performed a number of songs including a medley of their older hits. (You can see several more of those clips after the jump.)
Those unable to make it to Rockefeller Plaza today can find more information on tour dates here.

MONDAY (5/12)
Tonight’s finales: The Hills, Medium, Samantha Who?, The Bachelor
- American Gladiators (NBC, 8pm): Season Two premiere includes new gladiators (‘Rocket’ and ‘Jet’). Seriously, how intimidating could a smiling Gladiator be?
- Bones (FOX, 8pm): “When the body of an aspiring singer (Ace Young of American Idol) is discovered, Booth and Brennan probe a club’s open-mike night.” Uhh—which one was Ace again?
- Gossip Girl (CW, 8pm): “An embarrassed Serena resurrects some troubling old habits as she continues to hide the truth from Dan.” If he only knew she’d been sharing her jeans with three other girls.
- How I Met Your Mother (CBS, 8:30pm): “Britney Spears returns as Abby, who is now dating Barney.” First Robin Sparkles, now Britney. I’m not sure if that’s a step up or down for Barney.

Ann Curry Gives The Soup More to Talk About
Regular watchers of The Soup are aware of the comedic material Ann Curry has provided Joel McHale. Ever since she repeated the phrase ‘Good Morning’ a gazillion times in one breath, the Today show co-host has become a fixture of the E! show. (If you haven’t seen that classic clip, you can watch it after the jump.)
Unfortunately, Curry made another a slip-up this morning that probably won’t get her off McHale’s mind anytime soon. Maybe she’s been secretly hoping for Katie Couric’s return to NBC?

What Happened to Paula Abdul’s Today Show Concert?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, ABC, NBC, American Idol, Gossip, News,
A while back it was announced that American Idol judge Paula Abdul would be participating on the Today show’s Summer Concert Series. Of course, given her inability to perform live for her Super Bowl pre-game performance, I was shocked to hear that she was ready to tackle a such a large task.
Well - surprise, surprise. I apparently wasn’t the only one to miss the news that her April 25 gig had been cancelled. (In fact, a current magazine I have sitting in front of me is still promoting the event.) A press release released a fews ago did not provide a reason for the change in plans:
“Paul Abdul is no longer part of Today‘s concert series at this time, however, she is always welcome at Today.”
I have to wonder—did the decision have anything to do with an actual performer’s engagement on a competing morning program? (Mariah Carey is scheduled for Good Morning America this Friday.)
Interestingly enough, a quick check of NBC’s website shows that Miss Abdul is now slated for August 29. Maybe she just needed the extra rehearsal time?

Deal or No Deal’s President Bush Appearance
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Games, Prime Time, Talk Shows, NBC, Gossip,
Given all the airtime the Bush family is being given on NBC this week, you’d think they were either up for re-election or they were promoting a movie about bees.
On Tuesday, First Lady Laura Bush will not only make an appearance the Today show, she will be guest-hosting for an entire hour. One of her two daughters, Jenna Bush, will also be making joining her mother for a quick hello.
But visits to the Peacock network will not be limited to just the ladies. On Monday night, President George Bush will be making a primetime cameo on Deal or No Deal. In a pre-taped message, Bush will cheer on an Army captain who is going for the million dollar prize.
So what will it be next? A visit from the actual president on Saturday Night Live? Now that would be Must See TV.

Laura Bush to Guest Host Today Show
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Talk Shows, NBC, News,
While next Tuesday’s political activity will focus on our country’s future, NBC will be spending that morning chatting with the current ladies of the White House.
Next week on Today, First Lady Laura Bush will be spending an hour as a “guest host” of the morning program. During the 9 A.M. segment of show, Bush will participate in several segments and give viewers a tour of the family ranch in Texas. She will also use some of her allotted time to plug Read All About It! - a new book she co-wrote with her daughter Jenna.
With her husband soon to be out of office, I guess it’s good she has something to fall back on.

Will Katie Couric Be Leaving CBS?
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: CBS, Gossip, News, Ratings,
According to the Wall Street Journal, Katie Couric‘s highly-scrutinized run at CBS may be ending much sooner than expected. (Or much later than some had hoped.) Sources says the anchor may leave her contract over two years shy of its 2011 expiration date.
Despite great first-week ratings, the former Today show host has faced a large uphill battle since her 2006 start. The 51-year-old has also faced endless criticism for her journalistic style. Through it all, Couric has tried to plow through her job with that trademark perky smile.
If the speculation is true, CBS Evening News may be looking for its next anchor around January 2009, right after the presidential inauguration. Although it’s doubtful a new seat filler could pull the network out of its ratings hole anytime soon, an early departure could help the broadcasting company’s pocketbook. Couric is currently receiving approximately $15 million annually.

MONDAY (4/7)
- Today (NBC, 10am): Kathie Lee Gifford returns to morning TV this week. And I thought the New Kids were getting old.
- Samantha Who? (ABC, 9:30pm): New episode. “Samantha has to move back into the apartment when she learns that she could be evicted for subletting it to Todd.” The girlfriend you hate gets amnesia and you get to keep her apartment. Todd has seriously been getting off easy so far.
- The Bachelor (ABC, 10pm): “It’s an afternoon of tennis and tea for six of the ladies.” I’ve seen what an afternoon of women’s tennis can look like on The Real Housewives of NYC. This won’t end pretty.
- Medium (NBC, 10pm): “Rosanna Arquette stars as an older seductress linked to the brutal murders of two younger men.” Maybe it’s best her relationship with Paul McCartney fizzled out.

New Kids to Reunite on Today Show
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Music, Talk Shows, NBC, Gossip,
After months of speculation, it looks as if it is now finally official. The New Kids on the Block are reuniting.
Yes, yes - we’ve already seen their website and heard a snippet from one of their possible new songs. But until all five boys are together once again in front of the cameras, it just doesn’t seem real. Ya know?
Well, the matter will be settled once and for all this Friday morning when the gang - Danny, Donnie, Joey, Jonathan and Jordan - make an appearance on the Today show. Although it’s unclear from People magazine’s report whether the men will be singing and/or just standing in their ‘courtyard’, I’ll be sure to set my Tivo regardless. (As much as I would like to see them, I refuse to get up that early.)

Young and the Restless Reigns Over Daytime TV
And I thought Today‘s dominance over Good Morning America was a long one.
At the end of this month, CBS’ Young and the Restless will celebrate a long 35 years on air. Although that milestone has been reached by several other daytime dramas, Y&R has achieved something not many can brag about: It’s been the #1 program for 1000 weeks in a row.
The long-running soap opera passed that amazing marker at the end of February. For those who would like to be spared the math - that means the serial has been tops for over 19 years. (Today has been whopping GMA‘s butt for only 12+ years.) The program first hit #1 back in December 1988. (For a historical reference, that was the same month Libyan terrorists blew up Pan Am Flight 103.)
