Tuesday Ratings: NCIS Closing in on Idol

Has the mighty started to fall? Or is NCIS just getting better with age? Despite dominating in both the viewers and the demos last night, American Idol saw one of its tightest battles in a long time. The CBS drama - with its 20.1 million viewers - got as close the reality show as it ever had before.
8pm
- American Idol (24.1 million, 9.0/24 in 18-49) was down 2 million.
- NCIS (4.1/11) brought in 20.1 million.
- The Biggest Loser (9.7 million, 3.8/10) lost 200,000.
- Scrubs (3.3 million, 1.2/3) remained steady.
- Better Off Ted (2.5 million, 10.2) shrunk by 700,000.
- 90210* (960,000, 0.4/1) added on 160,000.

Were they simply curious to see life on Idol post-Paula Abdul? Were they hoping to get their Simon Cowell fix? Were they dying to see Victoria Beckham crack a smile? Whatever the reason, fans turned out in droves for the premiere of American Idol. The show easily dominated the competition and had its best-rated debut since 2007.

- American Idol (11.8/29 in 18-49) had 29.9 million sucked in.
- Approximately 20.7 million watched the 150th episode of NCIS (4.3/11).
- The Biggest Loser (8.1 million, 3.2/8) slimmed down by 3.6 million.
- Scrubs* (0.8/2) scrapped up 2.6 million.
- Better Off Ted (2.2 milion, 0.8/2) lost 800,000.
- 90210* (0.3/1) nailed down 770,500.

Despite the return of NCIS and NCIS: LA, NBC - with help from The Biggest Loser: Couples - managed to outweigh CBS in the demos last night. The Eye network nearly doubled its nearest competitor in viewers though.

- NCIS (21.4 million, 4.4/12 in 18-49) scored its second biggest audience to date.
- The Biggest Loser: Couples (11.7 million, 4.6/12) had its best premiere demo in history.
- FOX’s coverage of The Orange Bowl (3.5/9) rallied 10.3 million sports fans.
- Scrubs (1.5/4) scraped up 3.9 million.
- Better Off Ted (1.3/3) turned in 3 million.
- 90210* (0.4/1) coughed up 900,000.

Tuesday Ratings: CBS Better Off Than Everyone Else

A good Day 2 showing for The Sing-Off and a finale for So You Think You Can Dance couldn’t keep CBS from overpowering the competition. The NCIS combo did its thing and gave the network wins in both the viewers and the demos.
8pm
- NCIS (20.6 million, 4.3/13 in 18-49) kicked off the night with 20.6 million.
- The Sing-Off (6.9 million, 2.6/7) actually saw improvement in the demos since Monday.
- A repeat airing of A Charlie Brown Christmas* (2.3/7) entertained 6.6 million.
- So You Think You Can Dance (6.3 million, 2.3/7) did the same as last week.
- The Vampire Diaries* (0.6/2) recapped 1.3 million.

- Two and a Half Men (CBS, 9pm): “Charlie teaches Jake the tricks of infidelity while his girlfriend is away for the holidays.” Tip #1: Ask your mistress to take your name off her phone. Tell her to just have it as a number on the voicemail.
- Chef Academy (Bravo, 10pm): “Chef Novelli’s enrollees get to the root of cooking vegetarian meals. As one particular student begins to annoy the others, the aspiring chefs forge alliances.” Spoiler: The episode will end with a carrot in someone’s back.

Tuesday Ratings: Loser’s a Winner for NBC

NBC easily outweighed the competition last night. Tuesday’s finale of The Biggest Loser tallied its best ratings since the fall 2005 ender. That meant a double-win for the network. Meanwhile, a new Disney creation was a bright spot for ABC yesterday.
8pm
- An NCIS* repeat (15.1 million, 2.8/8 in 18-49) was the most-watched show of the night.
- The Biggest Loser (13.5 million, 5.0/13) was up 3.5 million from last week.
- Disney Prep & Landing (4.1/11) debuted to 12 million.
- A Charlie Brown Christmas (3.7/11) attracted 11.2 million Peanuts fans.
- So You Think You Can Dance (6.3 million, 2.4/6) added on 600,000.
- 90210 (1.9 million, 1.0/3) slipped by 300,000.

- The Biggest Loser (8.9 million, 3.5/10) trimmed off 500,000.

Didn’t know Heather Locklear was moving back to Melrose Place? Apparently you weren’t the only who missed that invite. Locklear’s return to the famous address hardly raised an eyebrow last night. The CW program still pulled in under a 1.0 in the rating and trailed behind its lead-in.

- NCIS (20.2 million, 4.1/11 in 18-49) remained steady.
- V (9.3 million, 3.1/8) let another 1.4 million escape.
- The Biggest Loser (9.4 million, 3.7/10) lost 300,000.
