On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

Here’s something new – a sitcom for the WB that the network didn’t pick up can be viewed on YouTube. Kind of an interesting way to get a glimpse at something that didn’t make it, and in this case wasn’t good enough even for the WB. Who knew they were so discerning in their sitcom choices?

The show is called, interestingly enough, Nobody’s Watching, about two friends who think they can do better developing a sitcom than what’s currently available. The fictitious WB execs hook the boys up with their own show, complete with a sitcom set to live and work on and their own studio audience. The show was created by Scrubs creator Bill Lawrence and two Family Guy writers, so it’s got a pretty good pedigree. Take a look – it’s not great, but it showed some potential.

Launa BeachWhy is it that we, as a society, are so obsessed with watching other people with bottomless pockets throw away their money? I never realized how many shows there are out there that focus on what can only be called “spoiled brats”. These past few years there have been an excess of reality programming documenting the lives of these spoiled brats.

The first one to come to mind is, of course, FOX’s Simple Life, which stars America’s most famous spoiled brat, (famous for nothing more than being just that) Paris Hilton and equally-spoiled Nicole Richie. MTV has Laguna Beach which follows around a group of rich teenagers and was so popular it inspired both a spin-off (The Hills) and a rip-off (8th & Ocean). Bravo’s Real Housewives of Orange County follow women who those teenagers will be in twenty years. Bridezillas gives us a glimpse into the lives of spoiled women throwing elaborate weddings, while MTV’s My Super Sweet Sixteen is the sixteen-year-old’s equivalent.

Joe Millionaire tricked women into falling in gold-digger’s-love with a “millionaire” who wasn’t rich after all, while NBC did the opposite in For Love or Money by offering the winning female contestant a large monetary prize for “winning” the heart of a man who is unaware of the incentive.

There has also been E!’s The Anna Nicole Show, A&E’s Growing Up Gotti, the WB’s Survival of the Richest, and MTV’s Rich Girls, Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica and sister spin-off The Ashlee Simpson Show. At least WE’s Daddy’s Spoiled Little Girl openly admits that their “stars” are spoiled rotten.

What is it that keeps us tuning in to these shows? Do “have-not” viewers live vicariously through these “have plenty” stars? Does watching their excessive waste make us feel superior for own conscientious frugality? Do we take pleasure in their seeming lack of intelligence? (I’m not implying that all spoiled people are stupid; I’m simply questioning the brainpower of certain wealthy people from some of the above shows, no names, no names).

A male friend in his twenties recently confessed that he sometimes watches My Super Sweet Sixteen. He and I both find the show extremely funny (even when it might not mean to be), but he also described it as a type of social-commentary. While some people might watch the show from a “wow-isn’t-that-cool” position, he sees it as a mockery: “how ridiculous that these children are complaining that they’re getting a $100,000 party instead of a 500,000 party!”

Whatever it is, America has not stopped watching.

Arrested Development

The new summer season is about to take over the steamy airwaves. As we laugh, cry and look for the remote while watching these new shows it will give us sometime to think about what’s on the horizon. A lot of shows won’t be back this fall.

Here’s what MSNBC has as the Top 5 shows they’ll miss.

  1. Arrested Development
  2. Alias
  3. The West Wing
  4. Everwood
  5. That ‘70s Show

A lot of big names are not on their Top 5 list. Some of those obvious ones are Will & Grace, Malcolm in the Middle and the Bernie Mac Show.  I’m not that heartbroken over a season without Hope & Faith and Joey.

Gillmore While it’s a good bet that the popular family drama Gilmore Girls will continue into a seventh season on the new CW network, it’s an absolute certainty it will be doing so without its creators and long-time writers and producers, Daniel Palladino and Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Sources fear that fans will rebel, but perhaps there isn’t as much to worry about as they may think. Fans have not been pleased with the husband/wife creative team for quite a while, when it comes to their favorite blue-eyed mother and daughter. Could this sudden departure explain some things?

Is this why the show has been so…well, lousy as of late? Fans have continually protested the ridiculous storylines and character choices found on the show for the past two seasons, including such eye-rollers as Luke’s ‘long lost daughter’ and the ever-doomed ‘L&L’ love story.

Perhaps the Palladinos lost interest long ago, and have been trying to amuse themselves by manipulating the characters into some sort of grotesque facsimile of the vibrant personalities we used to know and love. Was it boredom that led this show from ‘quirky’ and ‘eccentric’ to ‘outlandish’ and ‘poorly written soap opera’ status? Will bringing in fresh blood give the show back its luster? Will this allow Gilmore Girls to go out with a bang, rather than the whimper it’s been heading for? It may seem like dark days now with this news, but there may be a glimmer of a silver lining there after all.

Smallville100 episodes into its five-year run, Smallville continues to deliver big numbers for the WB.  Above and beyond muscular Nielsens, the series about the super adolescent has been a winner in other arenas, too. Smallville‘s Seasons 1-4 DVDs have grossed in excess of $100 million for Warner Home Video.  In 2004, ABC Family picked up the super series for syndication, paying $400,000. per episode for the privilege.

As WB and UPN morph into the CW, Smallville is definitely among the neophyte network’s most valuable assets.

CW Seventh HeavenAfter 10 seasons, the family drama Seventh Heaven was slated for demise by its network, the WB. The newly formed CW has other ideas.

The new network, regardless of waning ratings, apparently believes the show is worth renewing. The merging of the WB and UPN has already caused turmoil with reported show cancellations. This move seems even more puzzling. Is it a good idea to renew a show that shows all the signs of needing to be cancelled? What do you think?

DescriptionWe warned you it might happen: with the merger of UPN and the WB into the new CW network, some of your favorite shows could get the axe. One has already been booted: the long-running fantasy-drama, Charmed. The series has run for eight seasons, and will end on May 21st. Especially popular among teen girls, the show featuring Rose McGowan, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano as a witchly trio of sisters will no doubt be missed by many. What do you think? Was it a wise decision by the CW to dump a show that has already proven to be a success? Or is it time for Charmed to go?

Sophia Bush Chad MurrayMaking an already awkward situation even more uncomfortable, One Tree Hill’s Sophia Bush has just now filed an annulment against her co-worker, Chad Michael Murray.  As many of you know, the costars and former lovers were married in real-life earlier this year.  Amidst rumors of cheating on Murray’s part, Bush separated from her husband after a quick four months.  (Ahh—young love).  Unfortunately, a real-life separation did not equate to an on-air separation for the tv couple.. forcing Sophia to remain intimate with her ex.  Fun times.

Court papers released today cited ‘fraud’ as the reason for the annulment.

QUICK QUIZ

:  What celebrity also used ‘fraud’ as a grounds for his/her own recent annulment? And how long did that marriage last?...... (ANSWER:  Renee Zellweger.  5 months.)

Veronica Mars CWIn all corporate mergers, there are gains; there are losses. It’s no different in television. The blend of UPN and the WB into the new channel ‘the CW’ has inevitably shaken things up a bit. Fans may lose some of their favorite shows, as two channels become one. Is your show on the list?

According to a January 26 report on zap2it.com, fans of Tyra Banks and her cadre of pouty young wannabes can relax: America’s Next Top Model will continue strutting its stuff on the new network. The show has been enjoying its highest ratings this season, and it had already been green-lighted for another two cycles by UPN before the merger was announced. Also probable survivors: Smallville, Everybody Hates Chris, and Gilmore Girls.

Entertainment Weekly reports that some nervous show-runners haven’t heard a definite answer as to their fate. Veronica Mars creator Rob Thomas told the magazine that although UPN hasn’t made any official announcement, “the buzz is that we are one they plan on keeping.” Less optimistic was Greg Berlanti at the WB’s Everwood, who said “we’re fighting for our life.”
