Fox’s Wedding Bells Meets its Demise

I don’t want to be a naysayer here, but Wedding Bells, the latest drama/comedy from David E. Kelley, seemed doomed to begin with. After just seven episodes, production has shut down, so it looks to be a done deal for the show. This show never really had much of a chance, with a shaky premise and some time slot shuffles. The show starred Teri Polo, KaDee Strickland and Sarah Jones as sisters running a wedding planning business. It had a great premiere following American Idol, then was scuttled off to the darkest recesses of Friday nights, where ratings steadily declined. “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, the show just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for,” Fox said in a statement. Looks like the honeymoon’s over. Sorry, had to be said.

The Real Wedding Crashers Begins April 23

NBC is hoping that the new hidden camera show, The Real Wedding Crashers, will translate into a hit for the Monday at 10 p.m. time slot. Previous ratings losers in this time include Studio 60 and The Black Donnellys. Studio 60 was on hiatus to introduce Donnellys, but now Donnellys will be taking a hiatus for Wedding Crashers. What does that mean for the fate of Donnellys and Studio 60? I’ve got a sinking feeling that it’s not good news. Still, The Real Wedding Crashers may be just the light and silly offering people are looking for, courtesy of Ashton Kutcher and company. And it doesn’t hurt that the series premiere is April 23rd, following Heroes. In the show, wedding couples will team with five improv performers (the crashers), resulting in what’s sure to be some funny moments. At least the bride and groom are in on the joke!

7th Heaven Series Finale Set

Am I experiencing deja vu? It seemed like last year was going to be the series finale of 7th Heaven, then they returned for yet another season after the merger of WB and UPN (to become CW). Yes, that did happen, but this year they are really wrapping things up. Really. And you know, they can’t really complain too much—7th Heaven has been the longest running family drama on television, with its first show airing in 1996. May 13th marks the series finale, which will no doubt bring in a fair share of viewers. Last May’s season finale brought in the highest ratings in over two years. While this show never hooked me, there are plenty of fans out there who will be sad to see it go. Besides, it did put Jessica Biel and Barry Watson on the map, so all is not lost.

Great American Dream Gets Canned

Well, that was fast. The Great American Dream Vote started on Tuesday, aired again Wednesday, and got the axe on Thursday. ABC is wasting no time on this waste of TV time, pulling the show from the schedule immediately and putting it “on hiatus.” We all know that’s the kiss of death. Sad when not even the “great” Donny Osmond can keep a crummy show afloat. Well, I say great loosely, but there are plenty of Osmond fans out there. If you were among the droves of viewers repelled by the show, the concept was that the audience would vote to make someone’s dream come true. Ratings were an absolute disaster, which is remarkable for a show that could have held on to the 18 million viewers from the Dancing with the Stars lead-in. Nope, just 5.9 million tuned in on Tuesday, and on Wednesday, that dropped to 4.56 million. Great American Dream—we hardly knew ya.

ABC Comedy ‘Underbelly’ Delayed

Seems the news that American Idol will extend its results shows has hurt the premiere date of a new ABC comedy, Notes From the Underbelly. The pregnancy sitcom was supposed to begin on April 11th at 9:30 p.m., which would have cleared it from any Idol interference—until they announced that Idol would begin having longer results shows on April 11th. So, Notes from the Underbelly has been bumped to Thursdays, starting April 12, with two back-to-back episodes at 10:00 p.m. Who knows if anyone will tune in that late for a fluff comedy, but the show will get the boost of viewers who may stick around after Grey’s Anatomy. For now, that displaces Men in Trees—no word on when that will return, but if Underbelly sinks, you can bet Men in Trees will be back in its old time slot.

‘What About Brian’ to be Canceled?

Ruh-roh. This is one piece of casting news that can’t be good news for the fate of What About Brian? Co-star Amanda Detmer will reportedly star in a comedy pilot for CBS. Does this pretty much squelch any chance of renewal for the low-rated Brian? Say it ain’t so, but I think fans of the show will not be too surprised if it doesn’t live to see another season. Many of us enjoyed this little mid-season entry last year, but it has been fizzling fast this year, despite the addition of hotties Tiffani Thiessen and Stacy Keibler. Anway, Detmer will join Paul F. Thompkins in the documentary-style comedy, 1321 Clover. For those who watch Brian, I’m sure we can all agree that the cupcake business wasn’t doing much for Detmer’s character.

American Idol Goes Long to Compete With ‘Dancing’

American Idol, in an effort to steal Dancing with the Stars’ thunder, will add seven minutes to Tuesday’s show. How does this impact Dancing? Idol will potentially pull viewers from the first seven minutes of Dancing with the Stars—pretty sneaky, huh. Why go to these lengths? Is it to better showcase the Top 10 and guest Gwen Stefani? Or just a nanny-nanny-boo-boo move? I’m sure they need those extra seven minutes because typically these Tuesday night shows have been running two hours. And that’s just too dang much! We’ll have to see how ratings fare because both shows are immensely popular right now. House, by the way, will follow Idol at 9:08. I know that’s screwy, but as an Idol watcher (can’t say fan, really), those two hour shows are brutal!

Prison Break Renewed for Third Season

I’ll admit it. I loved Prison Break during the first season, but have steadily lost interest this year. The start of season two, I’d watch the show while doing something else… the last few weeks, I just haven’t watched it at all. I do get second-hand info from my husband and recaps, and it does sound like things are picking up again. But a third season? Honestly, what are they going to do for a third year? You just know it was more exciting when they were locked up, so maybe season three will have them back in the slammer? Creator/executive producer Paul Scheuring said, “It’s going to return to the fundamental conceit, to the roots of what the show was about.” Yep, sounds like they might be back behind bars after all. “They got scattered in the winds—their stories became separate and defused,” Scheuring said. “They will come back together again, (and) their conflicts and interactions will return.” Ratings are still going pretty well, with an average of 9.1 million tuning in each week.

‘The Riches’ off to a Good Start on FX

The Riches premiered on Monday on FX and the viewership was great. I am eager to see this show, but somehow my dedication to What About Brian forced me to DVR The Riches and watch Brian instead. Boy, did I choose poorly. I could have used a taste of something new, rather than the same old thing on Brian. But that show is a whole other discussion. On to The Riches, starring big fave of mine Eddie Izzard and the talented Minnie Driver. Here’s the thing—I wasn’t sure how this was going to be received. Fans of Izzard are most likely expecting him in all his comedic glory and instead he’s playing the drama card. Not that he hasn’t done that before—he has acted in a handful of serious roles and he’s more than capable. It’s just that, if you’ve ever seen his standup special Dress to Kill (and if you haven’t, quickly run out and rent it—it’s the funniest thing out there), you are probably expecting him to play funny on The Riches. Despite the seriousness, the show averaged 3.8 million viewers. If you missed it, FX will re-air the debut on Saturday at 10 p.m. and Sunday at 11 p.m. With any luck, I’ll get a chance to watch it on my DVR before the weekend.

Thursday Night Shuffle for Scrubs, 30 Rock

Hey, as long as they’re both in the Thursday night lineup, it makes no difference what time they air. NBC announced that 30 Rock will be back sooner than planned—the original plan was to bump the comedy for a month to air Andy Barker, P.I., beginning this week. 30 Rock will instead be back on April 5th, as part of stellar night of super-sized episodes. Here’s where the shuffle goes down—on April 12th, 30 Rock will move to 9 p.m. and Scrubs moves to the 9:30 p.m. slot. 30 Rock will hold the 9:00 spot until its season finale on April 26. Then Scrubs goes back to the 9:00 time for a back-to-back showing on May 3rd. Got all that? A bit confusing, but shouldn’t cause too much damage for us fans of the Thursday night block. On April 5th, The Office will run 40 minutes, 30 Rock will begin at 8:40 and run 35 minutes, and Scrubs will run 35 minutes beginning at 9:15. Andy Barker will start at 9:50 (but will not be super-sized) and a repeat of My Name is Earl will show at 10:20. Clear your calendar for that night, folks… it’s gonna be a good one.
