Tuesday Ratings: Melrose, 90210 Disappoint

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Games, Music, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Ratings,
The fall season hasn’t officially kicked into high gear, yet 90210 and Melrose Place are already coming up short. The sophomore drama debuted to nearly 2 million less than it did last year. Meanwhile, the freshman entry attracted a smaller number than Privileged did last September. (Note: CW has since canceled Privileged.)
8pm
- An NCIS* repeat (10.7 million, 2.1/6 in 18-49) was the hour’s largest draw.
- Hell’s Kitchen (7.6 million, 3.5/11) had the night’s best demos.
- America’s Got Talent* (1.5/5) got NBC warmed up with 6.8 million.
- Shark Tank* (1.1/3) attacked 3.4 million.
- 90210‘s debut (1.3/4) pulled in 2.6 million.

Friday Ratings: Jay Leno Leaves on a Record High

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Late Night, Talk Shows, NBC, Ratings,
Whether they were there to say “goodbye” to Jay Leno or “hello” to Conan O’Brien, the late-night viewers turned out in droves.
May 29’s telecast of The Tonight Show earned the program’s best Friday numbers in Leno’s 17-year history with the program. Leno’s pseudo-finale earned a 8.8 rating/20 share in overnight metered markets—that’s a 126% increase over what the average was for this quarter.
Had it not been for President Obama’s appearance on March 19, the show would have had the best ratings for the whole year. (Obama’s visit drew in a 11.2/26 share.) It would have also been the highest performance for a telecast since the tribute to Johnny Carson in January 2005.

Thank goodness for Wipeout. The Season 2 premiere of summer’s guilty pleasure saved ABC from a completely dismal evening. Even though the reality competition bested SYTYCD in the 8:00 demos, FOX was still the overall winner with the 18-49s. Meanwhile, CBS was first place with the viewers.

Did everyone just assume Adam Lambert was going to win? Over 100 million votes were cast for the Idol finale, but less than a third of that figure bothered to watch. 8pm
- American Idol 8 (28.8 million, 10/28 in 18-49) was down approximately 3 million from American Idol 7.
- The New Adventures of Old Christine (5.7 million, 1.6/5) fell by 800,000; Gary Unmarried (1.7/5) wrapped up with 5.6 million.
- Law & Order: Criminal Intent (5 million, 1.1/3) slid by 500,000.
- Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (1.2/3) pulled in 3.4 million for ABC.
- CW’s airing of Take the Lead (0.4/1) scored 1.3 million.
