Book of Daniel CancelledPerhaps it could be called inevitable: The Book of Daniel, starring Aidan Quinn as a troubled priest who carries on casual conversations with Jesus, was a sore spot for many viewers before the show even aired. NBC attributes the cancellation to low ratings. Of course, with the show banned by so many cable carriers, The Book of Daniel hardly seemed to stand a chance.

Conservative rights groups are claiming the cancellation as a personal victory:

BC’s move was lauded by the Tupelo, Miss.-based American Family Association, which had condemned the show as a sign of what it called the broadcaster’s “anti-Christian bigotry.”

The group, along with James Dobson’s Focus on the Family, asked supporters to lobby their local NBC affiliates to refuse to carry it. In an article posted on its Web site, the AFA credited viewer complaints for forcing the network’s hand.

“This shows the average American that he doesn’t have to simply sit back and take the trash being offered on TV, but he can get involved and fight back with his pocketbook,” “AFA founder and chairman Donald E. Wildmon said in the posting.

The network had no comment on the statement.

The show’s creator and executive producer, Jack Kenny, has said his goal was to depict how “humor and grace” help a flawed man struggle with his faith and family. He said the writers never meant to mock religion or Jesus.

What do you think? Do television affiliates have the right to refuse to air a show, or should they let viewers decide? Will there ever be a time when all themes, no matter how controversial, will be accepted on television?

American Idol, 8pm, FOX. A special two hour audition episode tonight: all the caterwauling and hissy fits you could desire!

Gilmore Girls, 8pm, the WB. A repeat episode features Rory’s 21st birthday, and the first sign that she may reconcile with her mother.

Fear Factor, 8pm, NBC. This one is supposed to be barber shop-themed, featuring women getting their heads shaved. Can’t wait.

Scrubs, 9pm, NBC. The best thing about having to wait so long for this show to return is the wonderful bonus of two new episodes we’re getting each week.

The Shield, FX, 10pm and 11pm. The new episode airs twice in a row, doubling your viewing pleasure.

Queer Eye For the Straight Guy, 10pm, Bravo. The fabu stylists take on Kevin Bacon’s brother. While they’re working, we hope they take the time to do something about Kevin’s unfortunate haircut.

Earl Chicken PoxITEM # 212:  Make sure to play with sick children..

Although My Name is Earl has been picked up for at least another season,  a case of the chicken pox has halted production for about 3 weeks.  Despite all the scrapes and injuries Jason Lee may have endured as a former skateboarder, it appears that a common childhood illness is all it took to take the show’s star down.  Seems someone still needs to do a bit more work on their karma…

West Wing Cancelled

The West Wing will end its seven-year run in May. Most viewers will agree that the cancellation has long been due. With the departure of Martin Sheen, and the death of beloved character Leo McGarry, the series has lost its sparkle. Be sure to tune in on May 14th to bid your fond farewells.

What's On TVAh…last night heralded the return of solid, non-weekend TV entertainment. Tonight, we recommend:

King of Queens and How I Met Your Mother, 8 and 8:30pm, CBS. Enjoy all-new episodes of these charming comedies.

Skating With Celebrities, 8pm, FOX. This wonderfully tacky show is sure to please reality lovers, with big drama unfolding tonight as the first couple is eliminated.

24, 9pm, FOX. Jack embarks on the 11:00am hour, fighting bad guys with a limited time to do it. Shocking plot, I know. This is your best bet for 9pm, though if you’re in a romantic mood, you may enjoy a repeat of ABC’s The Bachelor.

Medium, 10pm, NBC. The best show on television offers a new episode tonight, with Allison in a quandary trying to locate a missing boy who, in her visions, turns out to be a rather evil adult.

CSI: Miami, 10pm, CBS. Horatio battles gangs and ‘gators.

The Bachelor, Paris, 10pm, ABC. Romantics will enjoy this new episode, but keep in mind: it doesn’t get much sweeter than Allison and Joe’s relationship on NBC’s Medium

That 70s Show, 8:30, FOX. One of the last new episodes ever, as the series will soon sign off.

The O.C., 9pm, FOX. Money and melodrama highlight the adventures of Brandon and Dylan and Kelly…er, of Marissa and Summer and Seth.

What's On TvThe last thing the world needs is another celebrity reality show. But we’ll take it anyway!

  • American Idol, 8pm, FOX. The auditions continue with the usual lack of talent and post-audition breakdowns.
  • Skating With Celebrities, 9pm, FOX. Should we be ashamed to admit we’re looking forward to this? So it’s a rip off of Dancing With the Stars. But still…washed-up celebrities in sequins! Really, it’s a must-see.
  • Beauty And The Geek, 9pm, The WB. In a repeat of the first episode, the beauties and geeks pair up, and the drama starts to brew. If you missed this, be sure to watch it so you’ll be caught up for tomorrow’s new episode.
  • Biggest Loser, 9pm, NBC. An all-new episode of physical motivation and junk food denial.
  • Law and Order, all new, 10pm, NBC.
  • Project Runway, 10 pm and 11pm, Bravo. America’s favorite prima donnas continue to dramatize the runway.

What's On TvNights like these are why you need at least five VCRs. Or DVRs. Or Tivo.

  • American Idol Season Premiere, 8pm, FOX: Does any other show have a chance against this perennial powerhouse?
  • Scrubs, 9pm, NBC: Two episodes of this hysterical series air tonight, ensuring twice the fun.
  • The Goonies, 8pm, AMC: Most likely people won’t be giving up hot series television for this flick, but we love the movie so much, we had to mention it.
  • Gilmore Girls, 8pm, The WB: Luke’s ‘big announcement’ is scheduled for tonight. But maybe the episode will be good anyway.
  • Law & Order: SVU, 10pm NBC: The best series of the franchise airs a new episode tonight, with Detectives Stabler and Benson showcasing their usual brilliance.
  • The Shield is new tonight at 10pm, FX.

With House, M.D. on hiatus for a few weeks, juggling tonight’s Prime Cuts is a bit easier.

We recommend:

8pm: Watch Gilmore Girls, tape American Idol.
9pm: Watch Scrubs (normally, you’d need to tape House, M.D.)
10pm: Watch Law & Order: SVU, tape The Shield.

Tune in each day for our recommended Prime Cuts!

Hugh LaurieA close bond between two men is not often seen on television today without some sort of romantic entanglement or macho posturing. Ever since the days of the 1960s Batman series, male friendships have been the object of jokes and accusations of homosexuality. Perhaps this is why you simply don’t see these bonds much on television today.

In fact, I can only think of two shows that ‘dare’ to celebrate this type of relationship to the fullest: NBC’s Scrubs and FOX’s House, M.D. Scrubs takes a delightfully comedic approach to J.D.’s brotherly love for best friend Turk, while House, M.D. showcases the poignancy found in the relationship between Doctors House and Wilson. The usually acerbic House shows his true self only around his best friend, and is able to admit his vulnerability to him. The two give each other advice and support, and maintain a rapport that is both touching and amusing.

Perhaps this could be the start of a new trend in television: the celebration of the power of friendship between men. Isn’t it about time?
