Tuesday Ratings: Viewers No Longer Curious About ‘Cavemen’
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Comedy, Drama, Games, Music, Prime Time, Reality, ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, The CW, Dancing With The Stars, House, Ratings,
ABC’s Cavemen may have seen decent ratings last week, but it appears the experiment’s novelty may have just worn out. Meanwhile, House scored another ratings victory for FOX (followed by NBC, ABC, CBS and CW)
8pm
- NCIS (16.1 million, 3.4/10 in 18-49) won both the hour in viewers and demos.
- Bones (8.3 million, 3.1/9) gained 430,000 viewers coming in second.
- ABC’s Cavemen (2.5/8 in 18-49, 7.0 million viewers overall) lost about 20% of the premiere’s audience; Carpoolers (7.4 million, 2.8/8) was also down, but improved on its lead-in.
- NBC’s The Singing Bee (2.1/6 in 18-49) started off the hour with 6.7 million viewers; The Biggest Loser (6.6 million, 2.7/7 in 18-49) carried them from there.
- Beauty and the Geek (3.2 million, 1.5/4) brought an additional 500,000 viewers to the CW.
9pm
- House (17.7 million, 7.3 rating/18 share in adults 18-49) ruled the whole evening with the viewers and demos.
- ABC’s Dancing With the Stars (16 million, 4.0/10 share) pulled in second.
- The Unit (11.1 million, 3.0/7) saw a slight decline.
- Reaper (2.7 million, 1.3/3) scared away approx. 170,000 viewers.
10pm
- Law & Order: SVU (12.2 million, 4.9/13 in 18-49) was up 500,000 from last week.
- Boston Legal (11 million, 2.8/8 in 18-49, 11.0 million viewers overall) held steady for second place.
- Cane (9.1 million, 2.3/7) continued its steady decline losing another 140,000 viewers.

Howie Mandel Strikes a Deal
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Daytime, Games, Prime Time, NBC, Syndication, Ratings,
And it didn’t even involve a call from the mysterious “banker.” Howie Mandel, who seemed to fade from the spotlight in recent years, has made his comeback. And then some. Don’t hate me, but I found his hyper comedy routine with the latex glove blown up on his head funny. Then again, I was 11 years old, so that kind of stuff is funny. So, he’s been doing Deal or No Deal since December 2005 and it’s been big business. Who would have thought that this former funnyman and sometimes dramatic actor (hey, he was good on St. Elsewhere) would rise from the ashes and recreate himself as a game show host? For anyone who watches Deal, you know how truly addictive this show can become. I try to steer clear of it because it immediately pulls me in and doesn’t let go. And I’m not alone. The show averages between 8 and 10 million viewers and airs Wednesdays and Fridays. And now, it’s been given the “deal” for syndication, with a special half-hour version that will air five days a week. Mandel, clearly no dummy, will also host the syndicated version (in addition to the regular primetime deal). No changes to the set or those briefcase models when it goes to a half hour, however, the big prize will be reduced from $1 million to $250,000. Still nothing to scoff at. Go Howie!

Pricey Days for Barker?
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Daytime, Games, Reality, CBS, Gossip, Rumors,
Things are dicey for the former Price is Right host, who held the position for 35 years. Bob Barker has been officially replaced by Drew Carey, but new episodes of Price won’t start airing until October 15. In the meantime, Barker seems to be in a bit of hot water.
This won’t be the first time Barker – and Price – have weathered a legal storm. Deborah Curling, who worked for Price for 20 years, has filed suit against Barker and the show’s producers. Curling claims the host and producers retaliated against her, forcing her to quit after she testified against Barker. It was Curling’s job to screen contestants for Price, but all that changed after her testimony in a wrongful termination lawsuit brought against Barker by a production assistant. The suit goes on to say that Curling was demoted and put into an “intolerable” working environment back stage, which forced her to leave the show last fall. Of African-American descent, Curling further claims Price is a hostile working environment where black employees and contestants are discriminated against. Those are some bold claims, and no doubt Curling will bring the entire might of CBS down around her ears.

Another Mark Burnett Show
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Prime Time, CBS, Apprentice, The - Donald, Rock Star, Survivor,
I hate to say I told you so… but, well… my prediction last week that Mark Burnett could sell the networks any reality concept has come true! I cannot see the future, but I do know that Burnett is a golden boy when it comes to developing new shows. Heck, with the viewers for Survivor, The Apprentice, Rock Star, and Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader, it looks like he can’t go wrong. So, here we go… the newest reality series from Burnett is called Jingles, which has contestants competing to create winning commerical jingles (hence the name) for real-life products. Oh the product placement opportunities! This is all about selling products, so no doubt we’ll be seeing some heavy hitters jump on board for a chance to be featured on Burnett’s show. According to Burnett, “It’s a very organic way to give advertisers what they’re looking for. It’s totally family-friendly, it’s noncontroversial, and (the product placement) is very organic. It’s not about pushing something that doesn’t belong.” Mmhmm. Right. But, home viewers do get to cast their votes and determine a winner each week, and the winning jingles will be used in a real commercial. Plus the grand prize winner will get a cash prize and a gig with an ad agency. Look for it as soon as next summer.

Mark Burnett’s Latest Show
Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Games, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, FOX, NBC, Apprentice, The - Donald, Survivor,
Lest you think that Mark Burnett is satisfied with just sitting back on the millions he’s earned off of Survivor, The Apprentice, or Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader... think again. Burnett is ready to spawn yet another wildly successful game show based on the childhood braggings of believing that your dad is better than all others. Seriously, that’s the premise. And with all things that come from the mind of Burnett, it’s likely to be a runaway hit. So, remember when you thought your dad was the coolest (and maybe you still do!)? On My Dad is Better Than Your Dad (really, no sense in shortening the title or coming up with some clever play on words), dads will be put to the test to see if, in fact, they are better than someone else’s dad. And if they are the “bestest,” the winning family walks away with cash and prizes. The show will be a mid-season offering on NBC. At this point, I’m pretty sure that anything Burnett pitches to the network will make it on the air. So watch out for “My Toilet is Cleaner Than Yours” or “Are You Smarter Than Your Dog?” If it’s from Burnett, it’s gold.

Fore! Another Hit for the Golf Channel
Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Reality, Sports, Cable, Gossip, Renewals,
Honestly, I didn’t know the channel existed. Even more, I didn’t know the Golf Channel is chock-full of reality shows, like The Big Break (currently celebrating several successful seasons). So it was with a dubious eye that I watched the brand-new Fore Inventors Only, a show hosted by Golf Channel alum Vince Cellini. For the past few weeks, each Tuesday at 10 pm I’ve found myself tuning in. First it was a little bit of a freak show – auditioning before a panel in an American Idol-esque set up, would-be inventors paraded their golfing devices in hopes of finding fame and acclaim. Some of these inventions were unwieldy, some silly, some totally nonsensical. But a few – okay, something like forty – made it through round one. And, before I knew what was happening, I was hooked. On a show that’s on the Golf Channel. Go figure.
