Regis Philbin Returns to Millionaire

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Games, Prime Time, Specials, ABC,
Regis Philbin will once again host Who Wants to Be a Millionaire on ABC’s ten-year anniversary celebration for the show.
“For me it’s just a pleasure to come in and go through the whole thing again, and hopefully to give away a million-dollar check one more time before we wrap it up,” Philbin said of the event, which promises to be a Millionaire spectacular.
New and former contestants and a star-studded gallery will highlight the episode. Experts like Wolf Blitzer and Connie Chung will serve as experts for lifelines. The two week event will begin on August 9, carrying on for a full eleven nights before it ends August 23.

CBS Brings Game Show Antique to the Network

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Daytime, Games, CBS, News, Video,
With soap opera relic Guiding Light going off the air, CBS is looking at a daytime programming gap they haven’t had to worry about for six decades. You see, Guiding Light is so dusty is used to run on CBS radio. It’s been on CBS TV since 1952. That is a long-running show.
Time to hit the panic button now. So what’s CBS going to do to fill the gap left by this extremely old (and obviously highly successful) daytime drama? How about dredging up an almost equally-ancient game show and shoving it back onto the schedule?
And I’m pretty sure that’s how the pitch went when the network decided to breathe new life into Let’s Make a Deal, that “choose a door” delight once emceed by the irreplaceable Monty Hall. Will you ride away in a brand new car…or get stuck with a goat?

MONDAY (8/3)
- The Closer (TNT, 9pm): “Brenda reopens a murder case when it’s surmised that a father may have offered a false confession to cover for his schizophrenic son. Sosie Bacon (daughter of Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick) guest stars.” Thanks to the Bernie Madoff scam, the whole Bacon family is now being put to work.
- Jon & Kate Plus 8 (TLC, 9pm): “Jon stays home to oversee kitchen renovations while Kate and the kids head to the beach as the series returns with its first all-new episode after a five-week hiatus spurred by a marital breakup.” The show will be followed by a new series: Jon Plus His 8 Dates.
- Making His Band (MTV, 10pm): “The finalists move into their new pad and tensions arise between the trained musicians and those who were self-taught.” There are some who are born talented, there are some who are taught. Then there are those who buy record companies and call themselves singers.
- Weeds (Showtime, 10pm): “Coworkers Celia and Dean develop a new marketing scheme after discovering they have a surplus of product.” Who knew one had to create a need for weed?

MONDAY (7/27)
- The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm): “Amy is jealous when she realizes Ben is going on a summer road trip, while she has to continue working and going to school.” I think her previous summer was eventful enough.
- The Bachelorette (ABC, 8pm): Season finale. “Jillian’s choice is down to Ed or Kiptyn in the season finale, taped or Hawaii’s Big Island, where she has outdoor dates with the two, who are also grilled by her family.” Let’s be real: A name like Kiptyn should never be paired with a name like Jillian.
- Making His Band (MTV, 10pm): Series premiere. “Diddy begins his search for talented singers and musicians to back him up on an upcoming tour.” Behind every weak singer is a strong support system.
- Dating in the Dark (ABC, 10pm): “The singles look in their dates’ luggage before spending time with them in the darkroom.” It would be nice to know if anyone was packing heat before the lights went off.

- Great American Road Trip (NBC, 8pm): New day. “The six remaining families hit the road, leaving the Gateway Arch in St. Louis and skirting through Missouri, where they land in Branson to perform skits before crooner Andy Williams and comic Yakov Smirnoff.” Apparently, the families also journey back several decades.
- Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm): “Amy needs assistance with her chaotic schedule, so her dad and sister lend her a hand.” When the supportive applause died down, she put the baby back to sleep.
- The Bachelorette (ABC, 8pm): “Jillian arrives on Maui with the three remaining bachelors, all of whom she says she loves.” Yes - and Jason Mesnick said he loved Melissa. We know how this goes.
- Make It or Break It (ABC Family, 9pm): “Sasha puts the girls through a grueling day of practice as punishment for attending a party.” That’s what non-athletes call ‘working off the alcohol.’”

- The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC Family, 8pm): “Ben tries to figure out where he fits in Amy’s life.” Well, the role of babysitter is always open.
- Jon & Kate Plus Eight (TLC, 9pm): “Previously unseen footage of the Gosselin’s early years is featured.” Misty water-colored memories of the way they were….
- Cake Boss (TLC, 10pm): “Buddy creates an ornate wedding cake filled wtih live birds.” Watch out - that might not be fondant you’re eating.
- Dance Your Ass Off (Oxygen, 10pm): “Twelve plus-size contestants infiltrate Los Angeles in a competition to shed pounds by means of dance and diet in this 10-part unscripted series hosted by Marissa Jaret Winokur.” In other words, a cutthroat version of Sweatin’ to the Oldies.

MONDAY (6/15)
- Greek (ABC Family, 8pm): Season finale. “Casey struggles with conflicting feelings she has for Max and Cappie.” Given how nauseating “Casey and Cappie” sounds, I’d think the obvious choice would be Max.
- The Closer (TNT, 9pm): “Brenda snoops into the abduction of a greedy financier being investigated for investment fraud, but she soon suspects that he may have staged the kidnapping.” Later, it’s discovered the investor was less than six degrees way from Kevin Bacon.
- Raising the Bar (TNT, 10pm): “Michelle then falls for a sightly cop who may be committing perjury.” So much for making him swear on the Bible before the first date.
- Here Comes the Newlyweds (ABC, 10pm): “The husbands try to guess what their wives think are their shortcomings when it comes to intimacy.” It’s not that they don’t already know—it’s just that they forgot.

- The Bachelorette (ABC, 8pm): “When Jillian hears that three men might have girlfriends back at home, she cancels the pre-rose ceremony cocktail party.” And you thought your boyfriend was just on a business trip.
- Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List (Bravo, 10pm): Season premiere. “The season opens with Kathy trying to move to a higher grade than the D-list.” Unfortunately, single billionaires only come once in a lifetime.
- Weeds (Showtime, 10pm): Season premiere. “Celia’s daughter discovers there’s not much interest - and money - in holding her mother hostage.” If the economy wasn’t so bad, Celia would have taken it personally.
- Nurse Jackie (Showtime, 10:30pm): Series premiere. “A black comedy centering on veteran New York City ER nurse Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco), who strives to juggle patients, coworkers and her own personal demons, including a substance-abuse problem.” Life as a mob wife doesn’t look so bad anymore.
