60th primetime emmy awards

Bright and early this morning, Kristin Chenoweth and Neil Patrick Harris announced the nominations for the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards.

This year, we saw many first-timers named, a long list of cable acknowledgements (for pay and basic channels) and several 6-way races.

Topping the noms for drama programs was newcomer ; NBC’s lead all comedy programs. In total, HBO was the most-nominated network while ABC came in second.

This year’s ceremony will be held on Sept. 21 on ABC.

Michael J. Fox

He captured our hearts as ultra-Republican, straight-laced Alex P. Keaton on Family Ties…and then he broke our hearts when he announced he suffers from Parkinson’s. didn’t actually say he’d never act again…but he did make the possibility sound somewhat remote. So, it is a happy (and rare) event that he will soon appear in exactly four episodes of the FX hit Rescue Me.

According to the general manager and president of the network, Fox’s character will be “very funny” and “very original.” He will play a man who is confined to a wheelchair, the new boyfriend of Janet (played by Andrea Roth). His first appearance will air on the show’s fifth season premiere, slated for the spring of 2009.

Fox made the decision to retire from full time acting in 2000, after announcing two years before he was suffering from Parkinson’s disease, which causes muscular deterioration and tremors. He appeared in several episodes of Boston Legal in 2006 and has made a few television appearances since leaving the full time scene.

MONDAY (6/23)
  • I Love the New Millennium (VH1, 10pm):  “Eight-part series featuring stars reminiscing about pop culture phenomena of the new millennium begins with the year 2000.” Is it too soon to wonder what VH1 will cover in 2011?
  • Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods (MTV,10pm):  “The ladies perform with a canine costar: Bruiser, the dog from the musical.” I had no idea revived Punk’d.
  • Psychic Kids: Children of the Paranormal (A&E, 10pm):  “A 14-year-old boy, who claims to see spirits of people and animals, is introduced to siblings close to his age who supposedly have paranormal gifts.” I’m always happy when freaky kids find someone to play with.
  • Weeds (Showtime, 10pm):  “Celia’s hard time in county lock-up gets harder when her cellmate decides to make Celia her ‘special girl’.” Yeah - that would definitely suck.

Courtney Cox on DirtAlthough she tried hard to set aside her nice girl persona, fans apparently had a tough time accepting as a badass. Either that, or they simply didn’t like her show.

After only 2 years on air (1.5 if you take the writers’ strike into account), Arquette’s has been yanked from the FX network. Interestingly enough, this is about the same length of time Matt LeBlanc’s Joey managed to stay on air. The drama also hung around longer than Matthew Perry’s Studio 60 and Lisa Kudrow’s The Comeback.

Despite earning 3.7 million viewers for its January 2007 debut, the program eventually experienced a dramatic decline. By April, Dirt‘s second season finale was down to 1.06 million. I guess that kiss with gal pal Aniston didn’t have much lasting power.

Cast of ABC's Dirty Sexy Money

Thanks to tape recorders, DVR, video on demand, webcasts, and more, statistics have revealed that not only have the 27 series that premiered last year bombed, but nearly 9% of viewers went M.I.A. since last year.

Okay, okay, so maybe it’s not completely technology’s fault. After all, studios do allow their episodes to be streamed online, and yeah, there was that little itty-bitty writer’s strike that went on for 100 days. Either way, network executives are always battling /DVR systems, although no one knows for sure just why they stream their own episodes online. Thankfully, they haven’t given up on us. Instead, they’re getting a bit more creative.

MONDAY (6/2)
  • Instant Star (The N, 8pm EST): Season premiere. “Jude distracts herself with work on her third album in an attempt to avoid choosing between Jamie and Tommy.” Someone who chooses to work because of men? That’s unheard of!
  • The Bachelorette (ABC, 8pm):  “Eleven of the bachelors find themselves backstage at Ellen Degeneres’ talk show, where they show off their ‘Ellen’ boxer shorts.” Okay, I’m confused. Who exactly are they trying to impress?
  • Legally Blonde the Musical: The Search for Elle Woods (MTV, 10pm): Series premiere. I do hope these girls realize there’s no at the end of this tunnel.
  • The Mole (ABC, 10pm): Series return. “The fifth season kicks off with one of the contestants ends up stranded alone on a deserted beach.” WARNING: Fake idol useless on this show.
