On Gear Live: Apple’s HUGE Siri Apple Intelligence Fumble w/ John Gruber - Geared Up 205

American IdolDo you have a good idea who will shine next in the pop music spotlight? Professional gamblers and statisticians do.

With “American Idol” moving into its public-voting phase next week, online bookies have begun laying odds on the 24 semifinalists. If the oddsmakers are right, we could be headed for an Ace Young-Katharine McPhee showdown sometime in late May.

Online gaming site PinnacleSports.com has the 25-year-old Young as the early favorite, with odds of 7 to 2 to become “Idol’s” first male champion since 2003. McPhee is right behind at 4/1, and another early favorite, 17-year-old Paris Bennett, is a 5/1 chance to take home the title.

Place your bets and let us know: who have you picked as the winner?

HouseTelevision series often, inexplicably, switch nights or showcase ‘special’ episodes on evenings other than when they are scheduled to air. Normally, this wouldn’t merit a mention. But normally, it’s not one of the best shows on TV doing it.

House M.D. will air tonight at 8pm, rather than in its usual time slot of Tuesday at 9pm. The show features some of the best writing and acting on television, successfully walking the tightrope each week between humor and heartbreak. Tonight’s episode features a teen supermodel whose heroin addiction may or may not be her biggest health problem. The case parallels House’s own downward spiral into drug addiction, brilliantly explored last week when the good doc’s actions suggested he was moving beyond pain medication into something far more sinister. Such a special show deserves a special mention. Be sure to tune in.

FOX Unan1mousIt is said that the simplest ideas are often the best ones. If that’s the case, FOX’s newest reality show, Unan1mous, should be a smash hit. With the advantage of an American Idol lead-in, the show will center on 9 people who are locked in a bunker, and cannot come out until they all agree on which contestant should win a cash prize.

Yikes! How long will it take?

The premise of “Unan1mous” is pretty simple. Nine people are shuttered inside a bunker and told to debate among themselves who should receive a prize of $1.5 million. They can’t leave, however, until they reach a, you guessed it, unanimous decision on who that should be.

If their first vote is not unanimous, however, the prize starts to get smaller and keeps dropping until the group does come to an unopposed decision. Theoretically, the winner could walk out with nothing.

Some contestants will be eliminated from contention for the prize as the game wears on, but they’ll have to stay in the bunker with the rest of the players and will continue to cast votes on who should win.

Obviously, a less than thrilling night for television, with all the repeats and the heralding in of tepid weekend entertainment. Unless you’re an Arrested Development fan, of course.

Numb3rsDashed dreams are given a chance of rejuvenation as major networks give the go ahead to previously rejected pilots. This move has been successful in the past, such as when CBS first rejected Numb3rs, but then gave it a chance to air and watched it become a hit show. Will other shows be as lucky?

The mix of second chance pilots offers a bit of everything: drama, comedy, and adventure, and producers hope that viewers will be receptive.

With a staggering amount of new material pitched every development season, the resurrection odds for an older script that already has been passed on are minimal. But there are a few factors that can increase a show’s chances.

“The key word is passion,” Fox executive vice president of programming Craig Erwich says. “Somebody—it can be the writer, an agent or an executive—has to not allow the project to die. In the back of their minds, all executives carry about 10 projects they wish they’d made.”

For eight years after CBS passed on his drama The Truth About Joey Ice Cream, writer Paul Haggis tried to get the project, about four young Irish brothers in New York, made. Finally, NBC last summer picked up the script to a pilot and later to series titled The Black Donnellys. It didn’t hurt that in the meantime, Haggis had become one of the hottest filmmakers in Hollywood after garnering critical acclaim for writing Million Dollar Baby and for co-writing and directing Crash.

Shonda Rhimes, creator of ABC’s red-hot drama Grey’s Anatomy, also is a writer whose previous work is being revisited after she made it big. Rhimes is writing a new journalism-themed drama pilot for ABC for midseason 2006-07 consideration. In reality, that project was developed a year earlier than Grey’s and now is being reworked.

We’re hopeful that we’ll find some diamonds in this so-called ‘junk pile.’ Sometimes a second chance is just what a quality show needs.

What's On TV

It’s a great night for television! Too bad President Bush’s undoubtedly boring and awkward State of the Union Address will mess up everything!

American Idol, 8pm, FOX. The auditions continue, as Simon recovers from last week’s hissy fit.

Gilmore Girls, 8pm, the WB. If you only see one show tonight, make this the one. We were lucky enough to view an advance copy, and trust us, it’s good. Before the night is over, there will be a blowup, a Friday Night Dinner fight to beat all others, the ruin of an editor, an eviction that leaves a main character homeless, a rekindled romance, and well…you’ll see.

Fear Factor, 8pm, NBC. Tonight, mothers and sons pair up to challenge themselves with death-defying stunts and bug eating!

State of the Union Address, 9pm, every darn channel! Stupid speech. Don’t they know how important Tuesday night TV is?!

Supernatural, 9pm, FOX. Hottie brothers continue their fight against ghoulies and beasties.

The Shield, 10pm, FX. This critical darling and fan favorite ups the grit and the gore tonight. Good times!

Tuesday’s post-8pm choices are much weaker than usual, with most networks opting for repeats. And we all know why. Stupid speech.
