American Idol Searches for the Next Great Band

Proof that the American Idol machine just keeps chugging along… comes the announcement that they are now looking for a great band. Titled (awkwardly, I might add) The Search for the Next Great American Band, Ryan Seacrest announced last night that they’re on the hunt for any kind of band—as long as it’s great. This new show is yet another gem in the Idol universe, with other highlights including American Juniors (remember that one?) and So You Think You Can Dance. The Idol‘s songwriters contest was just a glimmer of another take on Idol greatness. No word yet on who will judge the band competition, but of course there will be plenty of auditions and I’m sure the show will highlight those who didn’t make the cut. The judges will select their top 10, and then you know the drill—the viewers vote each week and the final three acts duel to the death for a recording contract. No official date has been set yet, but producers are expecting the show to air in the fall.

American Idol’s Four Finalists

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Ratings,
After the cast of American Idol’s season 6 were whittled down dramatically from six to four, the stage looked a little emptier. And last night’s performances, at least in the judges’ eyes, didn’t do much to fill the empty space. Though Idol finalists Blake Lewis, Melinda Doolittle, LaKisha Jones, and Jordin Sparks sang two songs apiece, they got harsh reviews from that famous panel of three. Even Paula wasn’t waxing poetic and oozing positive ego-boosters at random, and Randy Jackson kept it real – hard core style. Though Blake changed up his disco tunes and added a modern flair, the judges had little that was good to say about his BeeGees renditions. Barry Gibb, the evening’s mentor, was extremely open to the ways the Idols changed his songs, which is more than can be said for most mentors of the season. All four competitors sat through at least one round of less-than-rave reviews from the critical judges, three people who obviously expected to be blown away at last night’s live show and ended up feeling a little let down. But what do you really want from BeeGees night? Today, the performances are old news. What everyone’s wondering is who will be left out of the final three, and who won’t.

American Idol: Season 6 Finals - Week Nine

With only four singers left to fill a whole hour—it was time for the contestants to be tasked with two songs each.
But of course, they were limited to one songwriter’s library. Luckily, Barry Gibb has a wealth of songs to choose from. From his hits with The Bee Gees to the tunes he penned for other artists—there should be something out there the contestants could sing. Right?

Idol: Coming Soon to a City Near You

The American Idol summer tour has officially been announced. In case you just can’t get enough of Idol, here’s your chance to catch the top 10 finalists performing live. I don’t want to get too down on Idol, but at this point, I just want the whole thing to be over. Not sure I could endure a live show after a very long season. Finishing in the top 10 definitely has its perks though—they’re booked for 56 shows—so their 10 minutes of fame could get a nice little extension (I’m looking at you, Sanjaya). Check out Melinda Doolittle, Chris Sligh, Gina Glocksen, Sanjaya Malakar, Haley Scarnato, Phil Stacey, Lakisha Jones, Blake Lewis, Chris Richardson and Jordin Sparks at a city near you! Tickets go on sale on May 19th. Visit the American Idol web site for tour infomation.

What’s the Deal with Seacrest and Cowell?

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Editorial, Features, Gossip,
The banter between American Idol’s host and the show’s harshest judge has been a mainstay of the reality series – but for some fans, the cracks made between Ryan Seacrest and Simon Cowell might be a little too much. From cutting each other off to making innuendos about the other’s sexuality, the two of them always seem right at the edge of jumping down each other’s throats. Some fans find it confusing – do they like each other or not? – while others just find it obnoxious – why can’t they give it a rest? What is the deal with Seacrest and Cowell? Are they the bitter rivals that they seem…or is it all smoke and mirrors, affectations for our viewing pleasure?

Bradley Cooper Back on the Market Again

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: FOX, WB, Alias, Gossip, Rumors,
Well that was fast. Or maybe not, by Hollywood’s standards. Newlyweds Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito have called it quits. If you’re keeping track, they’ve only been married for four months. TMZ.com has reported that the two filed for divorce today citing, you guessed it, irreconcilable differences. They got married in December, just two months after announcing their engagement. Couldn’t they figure out before they tied the knot that they were incompatible? Apparently they split sometime before filing for divorce, with Cooper’s rep saying, “Actually they’ve been separated for quite a while.” You may remember Esposito from Spin City and the Best Picture film Crash, as well as the series Related. Cooper was on Alias and (sadly) the short-lived series Kitchen Confidential.

American Idol: Season 6 Finals - Week Eight

Charity week’s over…so enough of the niceties. Two people will be going home this week—and with the sacrificial lamb (Sanjaya) already gone, there aren’t many left to choose from.
Jon Bon Jovi was on hand this week to help guide—and weed out—the singers. As a thank you, the contestants did their best to avoid butchering his songs. Who managed to rock it out and who just ended up sounding like bad medicine? Read on!

May’s Big Sendoffs

It’s May, and that can only mean one thing: finales. The official TV season is ending so that summer’s reality programming can begin, but all the hot shows are determined to go out with a bang. Which show will have the most surprising finale of all? Which shows will only be coming back in re-runs? How will they all say good-bye? There’s only one way to find out – but you don’t have to watch them all.
After nine hilarious seasons, The King of Queens cast will say their final good-byes on Monday, May 14 at 9pm ET. The CBS show will get a big send-off to cap off its almost decade-long run, giving fans that chance to laugh at Kevin James and Jerry Stiller one last time. The dramatic hour-long finale will have plenty of tears but lots of laughter, too. Insiders say the show will have a happy ending. The real tragedy behind King of Queens going off the air is that Jerry Stiller will no longer have a sitcom gig – and that man is hysterical.

American Idol Busted

Boy, when those American Idols fall, they fall hard. The latest victim is Jessica Sierra, a top 12 finalist from the 2005 Idol run. She was arrested for felony battery charges and cocaine possession over the weekend in Florida. Apparently, she threw a glass at a male customer, then she was “belligerent” at the time of arrest. She was released Sunday afternoon on an $11,500 bond. Post-Idol, she’s faded from the spotlight… I’m sure this isn’t the sort of headline grabbing news she had hoped to earn, because this incident will do nothing for what little of a singing career she has left. She did have one overzealous fan, however, who was was arrested last year after stalking her.

Sanjaya’s Dark Secret

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Music, Prime Time, Reality, FOX, American Idol, Gossip, Rumors,
It was only a matter of time before some deep, dark secret from American Idol contestant Sanjaya Malakar came to light. Seems his family was into farming—and not veggies, either. Sanjaya’s mother, Jillian Blith, and stepfather, Charles Quist, were arrested and charged in 2005 for “unlawful manufacturing of a controlled substance.” The police found 310 marijuana plants in the garage—ruh-roh. Sanjaya’s sister, Shyamali, was also arrested for possession. Seems the neighbors ratted them out after reporting the smell of marijuana and seeing Sanjaya’s mom “install a large vent on the roof of the garage.” Sanjaya, who would have been 15 at the time, was not involved in the bust. Whether or not this latest news will ruin Sanjaya’s chances of following his music, acting and modelling dreams is unclear. I’m willing to bet his 15 minutes of fame will be running out soon though.
