On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

If the writing on the wall wasn’t already obvious for ABC’s Commander in Chief, it’s clearly evident now.  The troubled show is now being moved to the competitive 10pm Thursday night time slot— during May sweeps.  Due to the bump, Primetime will temporarily move to Thursdays.  You can watch Geena Davis again (or not) starting Thursday, April 13th.

Commander In ChiefWhen the 2005-2006 broadcast network television season began in September, ABC-TV’s Commander in Chief was the highest-rated new series.  But the honeymoon and high ratings ended prematurely for the Geena Davis drama. Only two episodes had aired when Commander‘s creator and executive producer Rod Lurie was replaced by NYPD Blue auteur Steven Bochco. Focusing on high tension world issues, rather than on the family life of the series’ first female president Mackenzie Allen, the Bochco episodes were unpopular with viewers.  Making matters worse, a five-week holiday hiatus saw the series’ audience turning elsewhere for entertainment.

Now Bochco is out and Rod Lurie crony Dee Johnson is in command.  But, even if Johnson returns to Lurie’s original vision of a series powered by First Family events, Commander in Chief may be a lame duck.  It will be difficult, if not impossible, to regain momentum.  Commander‘s last episode aired two months ago, and the next episode is almost a month away.

Big LoveHBO’s muscular Mafia megahit, The Sopranos, attracted 9.2 million viewers to the network on Sunday. However, the premium channel’s freshman entry, Big Love - which follows The Sopranos - managed to lose almost 6 million of its buff lead-in’s audience, registering a limp 3.4 million viewers.  Dubbed ‘Desperate Housewives in Utah’ by cynics, Big Love premiered on Sunday, March 12, to a less than stellar audience of 4.6 million.

For the uninitiated, Big Love stars Bill Paxton as a Viagara-propelled polygamist who juggles three beautiful wives and legal woes in present-day Utah.  As the over-extended husband/father/businessman, Paxton is supported by the wonderful Ginnifer Goodwin, Jeanne Tripplehorn, and Chloe Sevigny, as the wives who perpetually get short shrift.

Prison BreakAfter a 15-week hiatus, Prison Break finally returns to Fox this Monday night.  Although the show is returning to its old day, its being welcomed to an earlier time (8pm) thanks to the old veteran, 24.  When we last left the show, Michael Scofield and his fellow inmates were on the verge of rescuing his brother, Lincoln, from the electric chair.  Of course, a wrench in their plan looked to foil everything and left viewers with a nail-biting cliffhanger.  Will the prison break ever happen?  Of course, it will.  But the bigger question is—will the show be able to regain the momentum it had right after its heavily-hyped fall debut?  Out of sight usually means out of mind, but being partnered with action hit, 24, could give the CBS comedy lineup some nice competition.

CW Seventh HeavenAfter 10 seasons, the family drama Seventh Heaven was slated for demise by its network, the WB. The newly formed CW has other ideas.

The new network, regardless of waning ratings, apparently believes the show is worth renewing. The merging of the WB and UPN has already caused turmoil with reported show cancellations. This move seems even more puzzling. Is it a good idea to renew a show that shows all the signs of needing to be cancelled? What do you think?

Six Feet UnderSix Feet Under, the quirky and addictive HBO drama chronicling the adventures of a family who owns a funeral parlor, went out with one of the most creative finales in TV history. If you were a fan or have always wanted to see what all the fuss is about, there’s great news - Bravo will air the complete series, purchased for a cool $15 million. That’s a lot of cash, but likely will be worth its price when the show garners big ratings.

We can’t wait to tune in.

House MDGood news for Hugh Laurie fans: the fan and critical favorite House M.D. has been renewed for a third season on FOX. Hugh Laurie plays Dr. Gregory House, a brilliant but seriously conflicted physician with a knack for both diagnoses and alienation. Surrounded by a talented cast including Robert Sean Leonard and Omar Epps, the show also boasts some of the best writing and acting on television. Always a ratings powerhouse, House M.D. broke all records last month when it scored its highest ratings ever. Newcomers can catch the repeats on the USA network. (Check your listings for local times and dates.)

We’re thrilled at this news - it’s always nice to see quality recognized.

DescriptionWe warned you it might happen: with the merger of UPN and the WB into the new CW network, some of your favorite shows could get the axe. One has already been booted: the long-running fantasy-drama, Charmed. The series has run for eight seasons, and will end on May 21st. Especially popular among teen girls, the show featuring Rose McGowan, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano as a witchly trio of sisters will no doubt be missed by many. What do you think? Was it a wise decision by the CW to dump a show that has already proven to be a success? Or is it time for Charmed to go?

Beautiful People

See: good things can happen on Monday!

The sweet sudser, Beautiful People, returns to ABC Family tonight at 9pm. When the show debuted last summer, we admit we were a bit skeptical at first. The fish out of water, high-morals family who finds themselves in the glitzy and morally lacking NYC plot seemed so…Beverly Hills 90210-ish.

But the show quickly distinguished itself as one of the best family dramas on television. This is largely due to its extremely likeable leads: Daphne Zuniga as single mother Lynn Kerr, raising her daughters Karen and Sophie, played by Torry DeVitto and Sarah Foret, respectively.

Foret especially is a wonderful talent, projecting a blend of strength and sweetness that provides reality and a (much needed) role model for teen girls. Plus, she’s so adorable, we could just squeeze the stuffing out of her.

Last season left us frantic to know: What will happen between Lynn and Julian? Did Sophie make the right choice with Nicky? Will Gideon ever realize Annabelle’s love for him? Will Annabelle cross over to the BP dark side with Paisley? Will Karen recover from her drug addiction and make it in the modeling world? Will her creepy stalker be caught? We want to know!

We bet you do, too. Tune in with us at 9pm tonight!

James WoodsAlthough the project was shelved just a few days ago, the addition of powerhouse talents Woods and Lee has given new life to Shark, about a celebrity attorney who becomes a prosecutor.

James Woods has been tapped to star in CBS’ drama pilot “Shark,” lifting the cast contingency on the project, while Spike Lee has come aboard to direct the 20th Century Fox TV/Imagine TV pilot.

The recruitment of Woods and Lee marks a remarkable comeback for the project, about a celebrity attorney-turned-prosecutor, which was all but dead 10 days ago.

“It’s a dream pairing of a really visceral filmmaker, a really visceral actor and a really good script,” said Nevins, who executive produces the pilot with Grazer and the project’s writer, Ian Biederman.
