On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

Lost Numbers Rodrigo Santoro, seen opposite Laura Linney in Love, Actually and Demi Moore in Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, will be joining the cast of Lost. Of course, as with all things related to Lost, there are no details about whether he will be one of The Others, part of a flashback, or a new character to be featured on life off of the island. According to show producers Carlton Cuse and Damon Lindelof, “We don’t really want to be at all specific about what we’re doing with the character or what he’s going to play. Part of the surprise and the enjoyment of watching the show is sort of getting a chance to meet a new character and see how his role is going to unfold in relation to the rest of the cast.” One thing is for sure –- another shirtless hunk in the cast can’t hurt.

In other Lost news, the online interactive game—The Lost Experience—will reveal the importance of Hurley’s lottery numbers that pop up in every episode. Those online gamers who get through the third phase of the game will reveal the mystery of the numbers.

Hurley_Lost At Comic-Con on Saturday, 4,000 Lost fans got a sneak peek at The Lost Diaries, a series of mobile phone episodes for diehard Losties. The “mobisodes” are a result of Hurley finding a video camera on the island and filming his experience. Lost creators hope to film 13 two-minute mobisodes on Verizon this fall, but according to executive producer Damon Lindelof, “It has been hard to get it off the ground, because we don’t want them to be ... lame.”

Season 3, premiering on October 4th, will certainly not disappoint. As mentioned in a previoius post on TV Envy, the series will be split into two chunks to eliminate reruns. Executive producer Carlton Cuse teased that the episodes “will look a little like a miniseries,” with Lindelof adding, “Something happens midway through the year that will fry everybody’s brain.” Other juicy tidbits:

  • J.J. Abrams will co-write the premiere, titled “A Tale of Two Cities,” and may direct the first episode following the break.
  • Kate (Evangeline Lilly) is promised to have a romantic involvement within the first six episodes.
  • Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick), the man in the hatch, will be back (that was a big unanswered question from the season ending).
  • The show will include more information about The Others’ history and identities (and certainly will introduce new questions).
  • The writers will focus more on the characters off of the island. Cuse promises, “We’re laying the seeds for a whole new element.”

Jessica BielIt’s nice to see those who have so much giving to others in need. Recently, Jessica Biel, of 7th Heaven, auctioned herself (or rather, a date with her) to benefit a Colorado teen who lost her left leg and part of her pelvis during a prom night accident. The highest bidder paid $30,000 for the date, and the teen in need received the proceeds for her medical expenses. The winner of the auction, identified as John, a senior VP at an oil and gas company in Denver, received a lunch date with Biel. I could joke that she’s not exactly a cheap date, but the effort to raise money for this teenager is admirable.

Matthew McConaughey is also raising money through eBay by auctioning off his 1971 Stingray Corvette to benefit Hurricane Katrina and Rita victims and rebuilding efforts. The proceeds will go to Oprah’s Angel Network, which will take care of distributing the funds. Says McConaughey, “I admire and enjoy this car, but it’s a luxury that I’m willin’ to relinquish at this point because I am fortunate enough to have everythin’ I need, and the sale of it will help so many with the necessities in life, part of stayin’ connected with an on-goin’ cause to help those in need for the long term.” As of Thursday afternoon, the bidding for the blue and white convertible was at $44,100.50. There are 6 days remaining on the auction.

Patricia WettigThe rumor mill is churning over this latest tidbit—Patricia Wettig, who plays President Caroline Reynolds on Prison Break, will be leaving the upcoming second season of the series. During the TCA Summer Press Tour, Wettig was on hand for ABC’s new series, Brothers & Sisters, and said that she would not be returning to Prison Break. Brothers & Sisters features Calista Flockhart, Balthazar Getty, Ron Rifkin, and Rachel Griffiths, among others. According to the Ausiello Report, Wettig said “I had to make a choice, and it was kind of hard for me to choose against my husband [Brothers & Sisters executive producer Ken Olin] and his good writing.” A Prison Break representative reported that “President Reynolds is still very much a presence [in Season 2] and her influence is felt, but as Patricia is a series regular on Brothers & Sisters, we will not be seeing her, at least in early episodes.” It will be interesting to see what becomes of her character on Prison Break.

Desperate Housewives ABC Entertainment president Stephen McPherson promises that the upcoming seasons of Desperate Housewives and Lost won’t disappoint. Speaking to Housewives, he said that series’ creator Marc Cherry has “taken over 100 percent of the show-running and that’s been a terrific change. The early scripts and the storylines and the arcs and the mystery, I think, are a lot stronger from the get-go next season.” I certainly hope so – season two was a major disappointment, but I hung in there in the hopes that it would improve. I stayed until the bitter end, which is more than some fans did. Here’s hoping Cherry’s involvement will keep the interesting storylines coming and character development moving along.
Lost, which has not stumbled in the least (in my opinion) on character and plot, did receive some grumbling from fans about the second season’s stop-and-start schedule. With mid-season repeats upsetting the flow, it was a frustrating wait for each new episode. McPherson says that a new scheduling plan will help – Lost begins on October 4th, then runs for six straight weeks when Day Break, a new detective drama, takes the time slot. Returning again in February, the final episodes of Lost will play uninterrupted. J.J. Abrams is also expected to increase his involvement in the series, and may even direct some episodes. Says McPherson of the scheduling, “We’ve just really listened to the audience about the repeats, and it felt like this was really the best way to run the show. It’s a very, very difficult show to produce. You know, if we could run 22 straight in the fall, we probably would. But we just can’t get the shows done in that amount of time.”

NBC logo NBC announced that it will be offering a preview of two of their new shows to Netflix subscribers this summer. Taking a different approach to promoting their new series, NBC will offer Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and Kidnapped a full six weeks in advance of their fall premiere on the network. Netflix subscribers can view the first episodes of the shows, as well as previews for the other NBC series on the 2006/2007 lineup. It seems like it could be a fairly successful endeavor – with over 5 million Netflix subscribers out there, it’s likely that the response to these episodes will be favorable. The shows will be available on August 5th. Hey, it beats the marketing genius of promoting your network on eggs!

CBSCBS announced that it will begin putting its eye logo and program logos on 35 million eggs this fall through a campaign called “egg-vertising.” Among the phrases that CBS plans to include on the eggs: “CSI: Crack the case on CBS,” “The Amazing Race: Scramble to Win on CBS,” and “Shark: Hard-Boiled Drama,” as well as “Shelling Out Laughs,” “Funny Side Up,” and “The Class: New Grade-A CBS Comedy.” Says George Schweitzer, president of the CBS marketing group, “We’ve gone through every possible sad takeoff on shelling and scrambling and frying. It’s a great way to reach people in an unexpected form.”

Um… yeah. I’m not sure how well egg messages are going to translate to viewership. Seeing a message from CBS as I crack open my breakfast isn’t eggs-actly (ugh, I know) going to motivate me to watch their programs. The eggs with the laser imprinted messages will hit grocery shelves in September and October.

Spike LeeNot too shabby, NBC – they managed to land Spike Lee to develop a new drama series. Discussion came shortly after Lee directed the pilot for the CBS drama Shark, starring James Woods. Lee is best known for his feature films, including “Do the Right Thing,” “Malcolm X,” and “Summer of Sam,” among others. It has not yet been confirmed if Lee will direct the new series, but he will develop and executive produce the project. His upcoming documentary, set to air on HBO in August, examines the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina. Titled When the Levees Broke: A Requiem in Four Acts, this four-hour documentary will have its world premiere on August 16 at the New Orleans Arena.

DB WoodsideIf, like me, you were a fan of Dennis Haysbert’s portrayal of President David Palmer on 24, you were most likely outraged when he was assassinated at the start of last season.  There is some good news for fans of the Palmer family, however: next season, it looks like President Palmer will ride again.

Just not the way you think.  Instead, David Palmer’s brother, Wayne (D.B. Woodside) will be taking over the Oval Office after the eviction of evil President Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin).  Along with Woodside, Regina King will be joining the cast full-time.  She will play Palmer sister Angela, who is an advocacy attorney.

I now fear for Wayne Palmer’s life; I like his character, and almost everyone I like on that show (RIP Palmer and Tony Almeida) gets killed, while Kim Bauer continues to live on to see another day.  There’s no justice in the 24-verse, I tell ya.  24 returns to Fox in January to wreak more havoc upon beloved characters.

Rescue Me FX has recently announced that the controversial Denis Leary drama Rescue Me has been picked up for a fourth season, which is likely to air in the Spring of 2007.  The show has been doing well in the ratings, enjoying about a 10 percent boost from last season’s numbers.  I’m sure that Denis Leary’s recent Emmy nomination doesn’t hurt, either.  I guess all the talk about the rape that apparently wasn’t hasn’t kept people away from the show—quite the reverse, in fact.  According to FX President John Landgraf, Leary’s character, Tommy Gavin, will get what’s coming to him as this season goes on.  Rescue Me airs in all its politically incorrect glory on Tuesday nights at 10 on FX.
