Midseason Show ‘3 Lbs’ Gets a Bump

With the recent gap left by the cancellation of Smith, CBS has made the decision to bring midseason medical drama, 3 Lbs. on air sooner than anticipated. The Hollywood Reporter reports that CBS has ordered four scripts of 3 Lbs.—this is a good indicator that it may premiere in November, rather than midseason. The original pilot had Dylan McDermott starring, but the show was re-worked and McDermott was replaced by Stanley Tucci. Tucci plays a mentor to a young brain surgeon, played by Mark Feurstein. The show is currently in production, so CBS can determine whether or not to add it to the lineup based on the early episodes. The series would replace Smith‘s time slot of Tuesday at 10:00.
For now, a variety of crime show repeats will air through the end of October in place of Smith.

CBS Drama ‘Smith’ Canceled

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, CBS, Cancellations, Ratings,
Now that the fall schedule is in full swing, one thing is certain—there will be casualties. Smith, the much-hyped CBS drama with big headliners Ray Liotta and Virginia Madsen, is the first show to be officially canceled. The show, which aired on Tuesday nights, followed Liotta as the leader of a bunch of thieves. CBS said on Friday that the show is now off the schedule and will be replaced by reruns of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and Criminal Minds. The word ‘cancel’ never was uttered, but the show’s producers give no guarantee that the show will come back. The viewership was so-so, with Nielsen Media Research reporting only 8.4 million viewers. The competition was tough too—up against Law & Order: SVU and Boston Legal.

Sorry Ladies—Bradley Cooper is Engaged!

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Action, Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, FOX, WB, Alias, News,
People magazine is reporting that Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito are engaged. The two sweethearts have been an item for some time, but have managed to keep out of the spotlight. Caught smooching briefly in January at an InStyle Golden Globes party, Esposito said of the kiss—“I’m not answering that.” Esposito most recently enjoyed the success that the film Crash garnered, winning the Screen Actors Guild Award for best cast. She was also on the WB series Related and I’m sure many of you remember her from her time on Spin City.
Cooper hit Hollywood hottie status when he was on Alias, then starred in the Fox sitcom Kitchen Confidential in 2005. I was bummed when that got canceled because it had some potential… and Cooper’s fantastic eyes (sigh). His other high-profile gigs include Wedding Crashers and a stint on Broadway opposite Julia Roberts in Three Days of Rain.

Garbage Disposal Seen in a Bad Light on NBC’s Heroes

When product placement goes wrong. That’s the issue that garbage disposal maker In-Sink-Erator has with NBC. In-Sink-Erator claims that an episode of Heroes did an injustice to their product. More specifically, in the pilot, the high school cheerleader (played by Hayden Panettiere) puts her hand into said In-Sink-Erator to mangle her fingers. While she has the ability to heal immediately following an injury, the disposal makers claims that the scene “casts the disposer in an unsavory light, irreparably tarnishing the product.” The scene showed a serious injury that resulted from someone putting their hand in the garbage disposal. The company also cried foul about the use of the In-Sink-Erator name, saying “It’s a trademark thing.” No comment yet from NBC, but the garbage disposal company is asking that any future broadcasts of that episode be barred. Currently, it can be seen on NBC’s website.

The Week Ahead in TV

MONDAY
The Bachelor (9pm on ABC): Are you seriously telling me that an Italian prince needs to find love on a reality show? Flavor Flav must make it look appealing.
TUESDAY
Friday Night Lights (8pm on NBC): Men everywhere will welcome programming that counters Dancing with the Stars and Gilmore Girls.
Veronica Mars (9pm on CW): Strangely enough, I haven’t yet watched the show that takes my name. But it shouldn’t surprise me that people think it’s so good.
WEDNESDAY
Lost (9pm on ABC): I’m gonna make a prediction and say Walt’s never coming back. Otherwise, the producers will eventually have to explain why he’s gained more weight than Hurley.
The Nine (10pm on ABC): First a plane crash mystery, now a secret amongst hostages. I’m not sure I can take all this uncertainty on the hump day.
FRIDAY
Trading Spouses (9pm on Fox): If the Bachelor saw this show, he might rethink the whole American wife thing.

Chevy Chase—where have you been? He’s back, and this time giving the drama Law & Order a spin as a guest star. He stars as a hollywood actor who is arrested for DUI. The episode has a decidedly familiar ring on the recent incident with Mel Gibson, as the character’s “religious prejudice comes out after his arrest.” The spin, however, is that this character will be “wearing blood-soaked clothes.”
Gibson’s incident took place in July and he pleaded no contest in August, receiving a sentence of three years’ probation, payment of a fine and required attendance at Alcoholics Anonymous meetings.
Chase, of course, is well known for being a cast member of Saturday Night Live, as well as his appearances in the Vacation, Caddyshack and Fletch films. Apparently, Chase hasn’t been too far from the spotlight recently, including the film Zoom this summer, and the indie films Ellie Parker and Funny Money.

First Casualities of the Fall Season?

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, Reality, CBS, FOX, NBC, Cancellations, Ratings,
While not officially canceled, two shows have received the kiss of death—being put on hiatus. It seems pretty early in the season to pull the plug already, but Fox’s Happy Hour and Justice have already been put on “hiatus” status. Fox is saying that the comedy Happy Hour will return in November, citing the upcoming baseball playoffs and World Series as their reason for shelving the show, if only briefly. Until baseball takes over, Fox will be running a rerun of ‘Til Death during Happy Hour‘s Thursday time slot.
Justice will also take a break, with a repeat of House airing in its place on October 4th. The network will, however, be airing a repeat of Justice‘s pilot on Friday, September 29th at 8:00 p.m. This time will cut the finale of Celebrity Duets short by one hour.
Neither of these new shows really stood a chance against the competition (even though neither is officially canceled yet)—up against Survivor: Cook Island and The Office.

New Characters Join Desperate Housewives

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, CBS, Desperate Housewives,
Coming soon to Wisteria Lane—a couple of new neighbors. Well, let’s hope they make for a better storyline than the Applewhites. The third season of Desperate Housewives kicks off this Sunday, and has added a couple of recurring players to the roster. Kathleen York will come on board as “a beautiful redhead mystery woman,” according to a Housewives source. Matt Roth will play the new owner of Paul Young’s home. Lynette becomes fast friends with him after he comes to her aid in a “tense situation.”
Roth was on a number of episodes of Roseanne, as well as in the film Blink, and made appearances on Grey’s Anatomy and Crossing Jordan, among others. He is married to Roseanne cast member Laurie Metcalf—who, interestingly enough, will also show up on Desperate Housewives this season.
Kathleen York has appeared on a number of series, including The West Wing and The O.C. Her song, “In the Deep,” from the movie Crash, earned an Academy Award nomination.
