It’s April, and that can only mean one thing: winter seasons are winding down so that new summer shows can blaze their way onto TV screens. But this year’s shows might not have enough spark to create a blaze…or even much warmth. This year’s summer shows from most major networks and cable channels center around new reality plots, as the summer season is always rife with new reality. Looking forward to summer renewals like Hell’s Kitchen, The Simple Life, and Kyle XY? Most summer favorites will be back for another run at big ratings, including Ghost Hunters (Sci-Fi Network), The Closer (TNT), and America’s Got Talent (NBC). But most networks are banking on brand-new shows to grab viewer attention, not old favorites. What’s fresh, new, and exciting about the summer season this year? If intense drama and reality melodrama appeal to you, then you’re all set for some great TV watching. Check out early previews on some of summer’s new, highly hyped, series.

With the announcement that James Caan was leaving NBC’s Las Vegas, fans of the show were in a bit of a tizz. Never fear, another manly-man will be taking on the challenge of filling Caan’s big shoes. Selleck, famous for Magnum, P.I. and his adorable mustache, is in talks to take on the role as the new owner of the Montecito Resort & Casino. Time will tell if Selleck can save the series after Caan’s departure to return to big screen projects. And, oh yeah, the show is also looking to fill Nikki Cox’s vacancy, so be on the lookout for another hottie to come strolling into the casino. Regulars Josh Duhamel, Molly Sims, James Lesure and Vanessa Marcil are all still on board for the upcoming fifth season.

Desperate Housewives Ratings Dip

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, ABC, HBO, Desperate Housewives, The Sopranos, Ratings,
If you caught Sunday night’s episode of Desperate Housewives and felt disappointed, you’re not alone. The show is just screaming for a decent storyline and the latest episode failed to deliver the goods. Ratings for Sunday were at their lowest for the series, drawing just 15.9 million viewers. Overall, the show has seen about 5 million fewer viewers from last season. ABC claims that the dip may have been because of the Easter holiday, the fact that The Sopranos’ last season aired at the same time, or the first time back for DH in five weeks. Maybe another scenario is that the show has just become boring. I was irked about Felicity Huffman’s character’s beef over wearing orange t-shirts as part of the restaurant uniform. That’s the best they can come up with?! Also there really was a void without Marcia Cross on the episode. Here’s hoping for better stories in the weeks to come before the season finale.

CSI Rips Bald Britney From the Headlines

Gotta love those CSI “ripped from the headlines” storylines. The latest will have a take on bald-headed Britney Spears. Well, kind of… one of the characters on an upcoming episode is said to be based loosely on Spears. The CSI:Miami episode will include the mystery surrounding the death of an actor killed during their stint in rehab. That’s not the Brit character—rather David Caruso and his band of merry forensic scientists will have an encounter with a bald starlet who is staying at the rehab facility. A September episode included another Brit-like star who carried her child in her lap while driving. Sound familiar? To tell if the character is really inspired by Britney though, it would require the actress to do some gum snapping and a few well placed “y’alls”.

Fox’s Wedding Bells Meets its Demise

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, FOX, Cancellations, Ratings,
I don’t want to be a naysayer here, but Wedding Bells, the latest drama/comedy from David E. Kelley, seemed doomed to begin with. After just seven episodes, production has shut down, so it looks to be a done deal for the show. This show never really had much of a chance, with a shaky premise and some time slot shuffles. The show starred Teri Polo, KaDee Strickland and Sarah Jones as sisters running a wedding planning business. It had a great premiere following American Idol, then was scuttled off to the darkest recesses of Friday nights, where ratings steadily declined. “While we’ve been pleased with the show creatively, and David’s writing was first-rate, the show just didn’t secure the ratings we’d hoped for,” Fox said in a statement. Looks like the honeymoon’s over. Sorry, had to be said.

7th Heaven Series Finale Set

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, The CW, UPN, WB, The CW, Cancellations, Ratings,
Am I experiencing deja vu? It seemed like last year was going to be the series finale of 7th Heaven, then they returned for yet another season after the merger of WB and UPN (to become CW). Yes, that did happen, but this year they are really wrapping things up. Really. And you know, they can’t really complain too much—7th Heaven has been the longest running family drama on television, with its first show airing in 1996. May 13th marks the series finale, which will no doubt bring in a fair share of viewers. Last May’s season finale brought in the highest ratings in over two years. While this show never hooked me, there are plenty of fans out there who will be sad to see it go. Besides, it did put Jessica Biel and Barry Watson on the map, so all is not lost.

Grey’s Anatomy Spinoff Details Revealed

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, ABC, Grey’s Anatomy,
So far, we know that the Grey’s Anatomy spinoff will follow Dr. Addison Montgomery (Kate Walsh) after she leaves Seattle Grace. The exact details have been sketchy, at best, but we also know that there will be a two hour Grey‘s episode in May to launch the series. More info has recently been released about the circumstances that will have Addison leaving the rest of the gang, including an eye opening look at a successful health cooperative. The other players at Oceanside Wellness group will include Taye Diggs, Chris Lowell (Veronica Mars), Amy Brenneman, Tim Daly and Paul Adelstein (Prison Break). No telling if ABC will pick up the series, but you can bet loyal Grey‘s followers will be along for the ride.

Kristy Swanson Tackles Anna Nicole Role

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Drama, Prime Time, NBC,
Well, it was only a matter of time before a movie of the week about Anna Nicole Smith materialized. Well, we’re not there quite yet, but Law & Order: Criminal Intent will feature a character similar to Anna Nicole, with Kristy Swanson taking on the role. The episode airs May 8th, in one of their “ripped from the headlines” storylines. Here’s the kooky part, David Cross will be playing a Howard K. Stern-type character. I don’t think I’ve ever seen David Cross do anything dramatic, so it may be worth a peek just to see him. I mean, his comedic quirkiness on Mr. Show and Arrested Development have me wondering how he can even play such a straight role. While I never watch Law & Order, this may be just the time to tune in. I’m curious to see how Swanson and Cross pull it off.

‘What About Brian’ to be Canceled?

Posted by Wendy Michaels Categories: Comedy, Drama, Prime Time, ABC, CBS, Cancellations, Ratings, Renewals,
Ruh-roh. This is one piece of casting news that can’t be good news for the fate of What About Brian? Co-star Amanda Detmer will reportedly star in a comedy pilot for CBS. Does this pretty much squelch any chance of renewal for the low-rated Brian? Say it ain’t so, but I think fans of the show will not be too surprised if it doesn’t live to see another season. Many of us enjoyed this little mid-season entry last year, but it has been fizzling fast this year, despite the addition of hotties Tiffani Thiessen and Stacy Keibler. Anway, Detmer will join Paul F. Thompkins in the documentary-style comedy, 1321 Clover. For those who watch Brian, I’m sure we can all agree that the cupcake business wasn’t doing much for Detmer’s character.
