On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

Hugh Laurie  FOX’s medical melodrama House led the ratings on Tuesday, winning viewers over ABC’s Dancing With the Stars and Law & Order: SUV on NBC. Approximately 18.1 million viewers tuned in to watch House, the highest-rated premiere for any network so far this season. ABC’s dance-off won fewer viewers from the Monday lead-in, while CBS scored 13.7 million viewers with NCIS. CBS won big ratings with Cane, a show that’s been highly advertised by the network. But at the end of the day, House (and Hugh Laurie) still led the ratings game. Is this the year that FOX wins big ratings – for a show that’s not American Idol?

Kiefer SutherlandWow.  When’s the last time a man was busted for doing something stupid?

was booked this earlier this morning for a misdemeanor DUI.  The actor, who had attended a party earlier in the evening, was initially pulled over for making an illegal U-turn in West Hollywood.  TMZ reports that Sutherland was subsequently taken in for blowing twice the legal limit for alcohol.  He has since been released from custody after posting his bail.  (NOTE TO FOX HONCHOS:  If you are going to throw a party for your celebs, shouldn’t you make sure they don’t embarrass you by leaving drunk?  Just a thought.)

This is Sutherland’s 2nd DUI within five years; if convicted, he must serve a minimum 5-day jail stint.  He is scheduled to make his next court appearance on October 16th.

Meanwhile, the next season of is scheduled to begin January 13th.  (Those interested in reading a major show spoiler, click here.)

Charisma CarpenterOkay, Buffy fans—I have some good news and bad news to report.

Bad news first.  Despite their earlier report, TV Guide now says Charisma Carpenter will not be participating in the upcoming season of .

The good news?  Carpenter actually has better jobs lined up for herself.  In addition to a one-episode stint on Fox’s , she’ll have a recurring role on the new ABC drama, .

Assuming Big Shots even lasts that long—you can expect Charisma’s run to start November 1.

Mad MenHave you see AMC Mad Men? Interesting, smart… different. Yep, I didn’t think it would make it past season one either. But, I stand corrected. AMC has picked up the series for a second season—13 more episodes. If you haven’t seen it, it takes place in the advertising world of 1960. That alone is interesting enough (to me, anyway), but the characters are intriguing and acting is top-notch too. And why not? Created by Sopranos writer and producer Matthew Weiner, you couldn’t possibly expect a sub-par series. The ratings, however, have been less than stellar, with 1.1 million viewers tuning in initially. Of course, it is AMC we’re talking about, so I don’t think they can count on ratings gold, plus this is the network’s first original series, so cut them some slack. Catch dashing Jon Hamm as Don Draper, the ad agency’s creative director and man of mystery (and adultery); Vincent Kartheiser, Elisabeth Moss, January Jones, Christina Hendricks and John Slattery (I’m guessing that means we’ll be seeing less of him on Desperate Housewives this season?) also star. The next season of Mad Men will air in summer 2008.

Andromeda StrainI’m going to be honest, I’m not surprised that someone is re-doing Michael Crichton’s The Andromeda Strain.  After all, since there’s a new pod person movie on the loose, films made (and remade) in the 70’s are now fair game for re-adapting.  Andromeda is being packaged out in a neat television mini series for USA with a cast headed up by Benjamin Bratt, who will play the formidable Dr. Jeremy Stone.

This role will be a step away from Bratt’s usual, in that he will now be playing a doctor instead of a cop.  I can’t help but wonder though, since it was constant in Law and Order, Miss Congeniality, and the unfortunate Catwoman - will Bratt finally get a change of costume?

Mary-Louise Parker It’s a girl for Mary-Louise Parker, star of Showtime’s Weeds. The actress, who has a three-year-old son, Will, with her ex Billy Crudup, just adopted a baby from Africa. If you watched the Emmys or read any of the recap info, you know that Parker didn’t win either of the two Emmys she was nominated for this year—for her portrayal as Nancy Botwin on Weeds and for a TV movie role in The Robber Bride. Parker last took home the Emmy award in 2004 for her work on HBO’s Angels in America miniseries. She and Crudup split while Parker was still pregnant with her son, but she told People magazine after his birth, “There are a lot of things I just would not attempt, but taking care of someone—I know how to do. I know how to do that, and I enjoy doing that.” Parker can currently be seen in season three of Weeds as well as opposite Brad Pitt in The Assassination of Jesse James, opening this Friday.
