Sesame StreetStarting August 14, Sesame Street, in its 37th season, will introduce its first new female muppet in 13 years.  Her name is Abby Cadabby.  According to a press release from the Sesame Workshop, “Abby, whose catchphrase is ‘that’s so magic,’ is a pink “fairy-in-training” who uses rhyme and magic to express herself – a youngster who knows just enough about magic to get herself in a jam but not always enough to get out of trouble.”  The new season’s episodes will also include guest spots from the likes of Jamie Foxx, John Legend, Matt Lauer, Amy Sedaris, Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight.

I don’t know, but it seems a little late for Sesame Street to be jumping on the Harry Potter bandwagon.  And, clearly, “that’s so magic” is just a rip-off of That’s So Raven.  Is there no originality in children’s television programming anymore?

Paris Hilton Interview

Just this morning on “Live With Regis and Kelly” Paris Hilton was interviewed as a guest on the show.  Paris spoke about her relationship with Nicole Richie and how the new season of “The Simple Life” has been changed from the previous seasons, such as the fact that Nicole and Paris are rarely in any of the same scenes together.  She told Regis and Kelly that during the new season of the show she and Nicole would be acting as housewives in several different families and they would have to try and tackle all of the things the real wife does throughout a normal day.  In one episode Paris and Nicole actually needed to wear pregnancy suits because the wife they were replacing was pregnant.  During the interview, Paris told Regis and Kelly that she was also a singer.  She claimed that she has always shown an interest in music and she will be putting out a CD that she has been working on for the past year.

Rosie The View The nicest diva of daytime television, fiercely missed by her fans ever since she cancelled her popular talk show, is returning to gab TV on The View.

With long-time member Meredith Viera leaving to fill Katie Couric’s absence on The Today Show, a gap on The View needed to be filled. Who better than the sweet, yet sharp-humored, Rosie O’Donnell? No doubt fans will be thrilled, although some close-minded people have protested due to Rosie’s sexual orientation. No doubt Rosie and The View will not let that stand in their way. There’s no doubt that fans will be delighted at the return of the popular comedienne. We sure are!

The official announcement is expected today. Welcome back, Rosie!

Merideth VieraTo virtually no one’s surprise, and to the obvious delight of many, including Today co-host Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira is joining Today, filling the chair at the hosts’ desk being vacated by Katie Couric.

The 52-year-old Vieira currently co-hosts ABC’s daytime talker The View, and she hosts the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?
During an emotional segment of yesterday’s The View, Vieira announced her departure from the show.  As for Millionaire, she will either negotiate her way out of a contract that runs for two more seasons, or she will negotiate a better shooting schedule that allows her to simultaneously co-host Today and continue hosting the game show. Right now, Millionaire tapes 200 new episodes per season over a grueling four months.  That schedule will be incompatible with her Today responsibilities.

Although Couric departs Today after the May 31 show, Vieira won’t be sharing Studio 1-A with Lauer until September.  Campbell Brown of Weekend Today is expected to be Lauer’s interim partner.

Gloria Monty, a groundbreaking producer who reinvented the ABC daytime drama General Hospital, turning it into a pop culture phenomenon, died last Thursday of cancer, in her Rancho Mirage, California, home. When she took over GH in 1978, the series was hovering on the brink of cancellation. Dubbed ABC’s Queen of Daytime, Monty was 84-years-old.

She was also controversial.  Her most daring storyline for GH had the characters Luke and Laura begin a romance after he raped her on the floor of a closed disco.  At the time, Monty’s critics accused her of glorifying violence against women.  Immune to criticism, the producer told the media, “Some people call it a rape.  We call it a seduction.”

Once a sluggish drama targeting middle-aged housewives, General Hospital under Monty’s guidance won a massive audience of teenagers and young adults.  The progressive producer added action-adventure and science fiction to plots; she quickened the pace, and hired attractive, younger actors.  She brought in a Broadway designer to modernize the set.

Beyond her many contributions to daytime drama, Gloria Monty is said to have been the model for the motherly soap opera producer in the 1982 Dustin Hoffman classic motion picture Tootsie.

Katie CouricIt’s official!  Television’s most widespread, high-stakes rumor of the year is now television history.  At 7:30 this morning, Pacific Daylight Time, from the Today show desk she shares with co-anchor Matt Lauer, Katie Couric, the longest-serving (15 years) anchor in Today‘s 54-year history, told America, “After listening to my heart and my gut, two things that have served me pretty well in the past, I’ve decided that I’ll be leaving Today at the end of May.  It was really a very difficult decision for a lot of different reasons.”

Couric went on to acknowledge and thank the show’s loyal and massive audience, “I can’t tell you how grateful I am for the support you all have given me.”

She explained, “Another reason this decision is difficult is my relationships with the people on this wonderful show….The notion that we’re a family is not just some cheesy promotional device.  I really care about everyone here.”

Of her co-host Matt Lauer, Katie proclaimed, “I could not have asked for a more talented partner or a better friend.  Just as Dorothy said to the Scarecrow, ‘I think I’m going to miss him most of all.’”

Beyond the departure announcement, the 49-year-old Couric confirmed that she would be working on CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes.

Katie CouricTelevision’s biggest story this week centers around the speculation that Katie Couric, co-host with Matt Lauer of NBC’s cash cow, Today, is about to leave television’s Number One morning show to become the first woman installed as the sole, permanent anchor of a major network evening newscast, CBS Evening News.

The rumor that Couric, 49, will leave Today for CBS when her NBC contract expires next month, has been circulating since January.  The rumor intensified yesterday when Television Week reported that a CBS deal for Couric had been “completed in principle” and the announcement of her NBC departure could come as early as this week.  Similiar stories ran in the Los Angeles Times and the New York Daily News.

Pundits say that Couric’s Today replacement would most likely be Weekend Today co-anchor Campbell Brown, or The View’s Meredith Viera.  NBC’s Today currently generates $250 million in yearly profit for the Peacock.

World Turns 50thFew television series live to see their fiftieth anniversary of broadcasting.  NBC’s Meet the Press and Today are two exceptions. On April 2, CBS-TV’s daytime drama, As the World Turns, joins their ranks. The series will celebrate by airing special episodes on both Friday, March 31, and Monday, April 3.  People and things have changed dramatically since the Eisenhower-era series premiered on April 2, 1956.  One constant, however, has been As the World Turn’s no-nonsense matriarch Nancy Hughes, played since Episode One by still lovely Helen Wagner.  Set in the fictional community of Oakdale, Illinois, the ever popular series was the Number 1 daytime drama from 1959-1971.  Well done, World.  Keep turning.
