On Gear Live: Samsung S95C: The OLED TV You Can’t Afford (to Ignore!)

Whoopi GoldbergSeeing as entertainment news television, websites and all matter of celebrity blogs have been reporting on Whoopi Goldberg filling Rosie O’Donnell’s vacancy on The View, it come as no surprise that yesterday her post was officially announced. Well, maybe a surprise to Sherri Shepherd, who was also rumored to join with Goldberg. Whether or not she will join at a later date has not yet been revealed, but some speculate she may fill the void when Elisabeth Hasselbeck takes maternity leave in November. Barbara Walters announced Whoopi as O’Donnell’s replacement, saying “She’s brilliant, she’s funny, please join us in welcoming Whoopi Goldberg.” Goldberg joined the ladies briefly to say, “I hope so. I love this show. I love watching it, I love coming on it, I love you guys. It’s wonderful.” Awww, group hug. Sounds like this may be a much happier group than the Star Jones and Rosie seasons. Goldberg will be a permanent fixture for the 11th season, beginning September 4th.

The ViewFor months now, our view of The View has been constantly changing.  A long roster of guests have helped to help fill the seat once occupied by Star Jones Reynolds.  And occasionally, Whoopi Goldberg has sat in the first seat left cold by Rosie O’Donnell.

The guessing game should end next week when producers are expected to announce permanent replacements.  Frequent seat-warmer Sherri Shepherd is finally expected to move from contract to permanent status.  (As many times as she has spilled her life story to those ladies, I would be incredibly upset if she did not get the gig).  As for the other slot?  That has Whoopi’s name written all over it.  Apparently, this means all rumors of a possible gay counterpart will probably be squashed.

Unfortunately, ABC’s Human Resources Department will only be getting a quick break.  Their job recruitment services will again be on demand soon when goes on her maternity leave.

Drew CareyDrew Carey is officially the new host of the Price is Right, the must-coveted gig vacated earlier this summer by Bob Barker. Carey announced his new role to David Letterman during Monday’s Late Show taping. Carey will also be hosting another CBS game show next month, the Power of 10. Promotional advertisements for the show have been running most of the summer. Carey will begin on Power of 10 August 7, though it has not yet been announced when he will start on Price. Rosie O’Donnell’s name was attached to Price earlier, but the comedienne refused the job when she found she’d have to move to L.A. It’s Drew Carey, former ABC fixture, for sure this time, leaving only one question to linger: will he be able to fill Barker’s sizable shoes and hold that famous skinny mike?

Rosie O'Donnell Well, it’s been rumored that Rosie O’Donnell may take over for Bob Barker on The Price is Right, but Bob himself confirmed during Friday’s Daytime Emmy awards that a meeting is in the works. Bob said, “I believe they’re going to have a meeting with Rosie. She knows the show. There’s no doubt in my mind she could do the show.” Wow, what about the other Price hopefuls, Todd Newton, George Hamilton and Mark Steines? The search landed these three in the finals, but seems CBS is dragging its heels and O’Donnell is coming in as a late entry. Question is, will she win the coveted game show hosting gig? Given her loud mouth and strong views (no pun intended for The View, but hey, it works), you’d think she wouldn’t be a very popular choice. Then again, what better job to keep her quiet than a game show? She has to stick to the job at hand, with no opportunity for political discussions or room to view her opinions. It may just be the perfect job for her. Will viewers tune in? Given Barker’s departure, it seems that any replacement is going to take some getting used to. Stay tuned to see how Rosie’s “meeting” went. Given that Bob’s last show just aired, CBS had better get things in gear and find a new host.

Bob Barker Well, it’s over. This week, Bob Barker taped his very last episode of the CBS daytime hit The Price is Right. The bittersweet final episode will air on June 15, the last chance for fans to view Barker in all his hosting glory. Five decades, and no more daytime TV for Bob Barker. For the last thirty-five years, Barker has been a mainstay of both CBS and The Price is Right. But, the original Price didn’t start out with either Barker or the strength of CBS behind it. The show originally ran for eleven years (1956 to 1965) on NBC and ABC and was hosted by longtime TV personality Bob Cullen. It wasn’t until September 1972 that Price premiered on CBS, this time with Barker at the helm. Barker was already well-known on TV at the time as the host of popular game show Truth or Consequences (which gained such a big following, a town in New Mexico is named after it). The show ran from 1956 to 1975, but Barker found truly lasting fame with his coveted Price is Right gig. For as long as the show has been on CBS (and it’s the second-longest running game show in television history, being beat out by a Spanish show that does not run in the States), Bob Barker has been there. Until, of course, June 15, when TV viewing audiences will witness Barker’s last sign off.

Bob Barker

As most of you know, Bob Barker has just officially retired as host of The Price is Right.  After 35 years, today was his last day of taping.

Having lived through the 80’s, I remember a time when I privately wanted to be on any game show.  From Scrabble to Password, I loved them all.  Unfortunately, game show appearances (like the ones on GSN today) don’t carry the same cachet they once did….but I still think of those dreams fondly. (And for the record, I would totally suck at Jeopardy...and Wheel of Fortune is just too blah for me).

While I didn’t get many chances to watch Price during recent years, I still know which games I wished I’d played.  For those of you who expecting me to mention Plinko—you’re wrong.  I never really liked those games of chance:

5) Range Game:  The board always reminded me of a thermometer with its dashes and red ‘screen’.  The concept was very easy but I always seemed to get a thrill when someone guessed a price just outside the guessed ‘range’.

4) Punch-A-Bunch:  Okay, so this would be a considered a game of chance.  But I like punching people…and things…especially when I could earn money for doing it.

3) Safe Crackers:  One of the fanciest sets to come off that show!  I so wanted to crack that combination so that I could roll in the fantasized dough waiting for me on the other side.

2) Cliff Hangers:  Weirdly enough, I was always a bit scared that the mountain climber would fall off the mountain.  I didn’t like to seeing him plunge to his death.  But the yodeling proved to be the best—and most nervewracking—supporting music ever.

1) Clock Game:  Why did I love this game?  Because it took smarts and more importantly…logic.  It always angered me when someone took too long to guess the right price.  When Bob said ‘higher’, you simply needed to guess higher.  When he said ‘lower’, you went lower.  And you did it fast.  Why some people could never grasp that concept—or give a good variety of guesses—I will never know.

To freshen up on your own memories—or to simply see which games I chose—click on the link below!  In the meantime, schedule a date for Bob’s farewell when his last show airs on June 15th.

Rosie O'Donnell Well, at least she went out with a bang. Snip, Snipe—she and co-host Elisabeth Hasselbeck got into an on-air war of words Wednesday, complete with split screen debate (those clever producers). The political feud over Rosie’s view about the war in Iraq made headlines and, of course, web gossip. As a result, Rosie O’Donnell isn’t gonna hang around for her final three weeks on The View. ABC announced that O’Donnell won’t be back to complete her remaining contract, instead asking for an early leave. Barbara Walters commented, “Rosie contributed to one of our most exciting and successful years at The View. I am most appreciative. Our close and affectionate relationship will not change.” Can’t you just sense Walters’ relief over the early departure? It has been a turbulent year on the show, and although they enjoyed better ratings with Rosie, the numbers came at a cost—Rosie’s outspoken manner made many headlines, most notably her battle with Donald Trump. Unfortunately, her early departure leaves us without the typical Rosie musical spectacular that she would have likely commissioned on her last appearance. Am I upset about that? No way.

Ellen DeGeneres Is this a history making TV event or what? Well, maybe not, but I’m pretty sure that conducting an interview from a hospital bed is a new one. Ellen DeGeneres, who hurt her back over the weekend when she tried to pick up her dog, was instructed to lay flat while she heals. Not one to quit, she carried on with her show—albeit from a hospital bed in her pajamas. Guests had their own hospital bed to lay in during the interview. DeGeneres told her Tuesday audience, “No, I’m not being lazy. I’m forced to bed rest right now. ... And, let me just start by saying I’m on pills.” One of Ellen’s guests was her doctor, Fred Lerner, who advised her to stay in bed for a week. He also added, “I’m hoping in a few weeks, we can see you dance here.” Here, here.
