VIDEO: Chelsea Handler to Host MTV Video Music Awards

Sorry, Russell Brand—there will be no three-peat for you.
For the first time in over 15 years, a female will get the chance to host the MTV Video Music Awards. In 1994, Roseanne Barr from the VMAs from Radio City Music Hall. In 2010, it’ll be Chelsea Handler’s turn.
“Everyone knows that when you think of rap music and hip-hop, you think of Chelsea Lately. And that’s why I will be hosting [the show],” Handler explained tonight about her selection.
Performers joining Chelsea for this year’s event include Justin Bieber, Kanye West, B.o.B, Florence + the Machine. The ceremony will air live September 12 from Los Angeles.

- The Secret Life of the American Teenager (ABC, 8 p.m.): “Ben and Adrian have ulterior motives for getting engaged.” He really needs a new Wii while she’s eyeing a new bedspread.
- Intervention (A&E, 9 p.m.): “A flight attendant battles alcoholism.” The intervention takes a turn when he grabs two beers and flees via the emergency slide.
- The Big C (Showtime, 10:30 p.m.): Series premiere. “Suburban Minneapolis wife and schoolteacher Cathy (Laura Linney), who is dying from skin cancer, begins to take charge of her life and live it up a little.” Here’s to SPF 15—Woo Hoo!

Pretty Little Liars: Pretty Big Finale

The Pretty Little Liars craze has barely begun, and already the first season is celebrating its mid-season finale. ABC Family viewers were introduced to Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Hanna (Ashley Benson) and Emily (Shay Mitchell) only 10 weeks ago, but in that short time the series has become one of the most talked-about of the year.

TV Talk: Levi Johnston Eyes Mayor’s Office, Ricky Gervais Says No to The Office

-Actor Ryan O’Neal and daughter Tatum O’Neal may soon make nice—for a reality show. The estranged relatives are shopping a series called Lost and Found.
-Levi Johnston is also pitching a reality program. Loving Levi: The Road to the Mayor’s Office would follow Bristol Palin’s ex as he runs for mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.
-Ricky Gervais insists he has no intentions of replacing Steve Carell in The Office. He says he doesn’t want to get up at “6am every day of the week for 7 years.”
-The Kids in the Hall will be reuniting for an eight-part original series. The comedy troupe can be seen on IFC starting August 20.
-Polygamy will be the focus of a new TLC series debuting September 26. Sister Wives will center on “Kody Brown, his three – soon to be four – wives and their many children.”

First Look: Jake Pavelka Plays Reality Show Star on Drop Dead Diva

If you thought Jake Pavelka‘s 15 minutes of fame were already up, you were wrong.
Later this month, The Bachelor star will be featured as a reality show bachelor (surprise!) on an episode of Drop Dead Diva. Pavelka’s character, Toby Davlin, will be at the center of a controversy involving a dumped bachelorette.

- Bachelor Pad (ABC, 8pm): Series debut. “The Bachelor and The Bachelorette meet Big Brother in this elimination contest, in which 19 castoffs from the ABC dating games face weekly challenges while living under the same roof. Before the first elimination, there’s a day-night group date.” Rejects being rejected by rejects? This is Must See TV!
- Last Comic Standing (NBC, 9pm): Season finale. “The winning stand-up comic is revealed.” I look forward to hearing nothing about this person for years to come.
- Huge (ABC Family, 9pm): “The campers get anxious when they hear it’s time for their first weigh-in.” The results will determine whom they face in the ring.
