On Gear Live: Apple’s HUGE Siri Apple Intelligence Fumble w/ John Gruber - Geared Up 205

HBO Mark Wahlberg has done great things for HBO, by bringing the mega-popular Entourage to the network as an executive producer. Wahlberg’s latest gig as executive producer is for a new half-hour drama titled In Treatment, also for HBO. The series is based on an Israeli series of the same name—a therapist who treats his patients calmly and professionally is actually a complete mess who has to seek therapy for himself. HBO has ordered five episodes, but has yet to commit to putting the series on the air. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the episodes will be presented as one long pilot. The pilot will be directed by Rodrigo Garcia (Six Feet Under, Big Love), so there’s definitely potential.

E! EntertainmentE! Entertainment Television will be offering a number of its programs for download and purchase on Apple’s iTunes. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the network will make weekly episodes of The Girls Next Door, The Soup, Dr. 90210 and The Simple Life: ‘Til Death Do Us Part available the day after they have broadcast. Each episode will cost $1.99. Ted Harbert, E! Entertainment president and CEO says the move reinforces their “E! Arrested Development OK, so we know that Arrested Development was canceled. We just have to accept it and move on (sob!). To me, it always begs the question: “How can sub-par sitcoms continue into their umpteenth season while something cool and hilarious like Arrested Development gets canceled?” It’s just not fair. But anyhoo… Arrested Development will be returning in syndication with a very interesting arrangement. The 53 episodes have been sold to both MSN and cable networks HDNet and G4. The agreement is that MSN has rights for three years, beginning later this year, and will be free to MSN subscribers. Additional interactive elements are planned to further enhance the greatness that is Arrested Development. Then, HDNet also gets the series for three years, beginning in September (airing in high definition, of course), and G4 (owned by Comcast) will get the series in October. Now if only someone could bring it back from the dead.

Sprout  The host of The Good Night Show has been fired after her bosses learned of her questionable job history.  Prior to landing her gig on the PBS Kids Sprout network, Melanie Martinez appeared in two videos called Technical Virgin.  The stage actress spoofed PSAs centered on young women keeping their virginity.  Apparently, the PBS President didn’t feel this was an appropriate image for someone who appeared in front of pre-school aged children.  The Good Night Show airs for three hours each evening and helps get young children to sleep.  No word yet on a replacement for Martinez.

WE Women's EntertainmentI’m convinced that a reality show can be based on anything these days. Case in point – Unwrapping Macy’s – set to premiere on the Women’s Entertainment (WE) network on September 20th. According to Executive Producer Glenda Hersh, “It’s an adventure with the people who make Macy’s happen every day.” The series was filmed at Macy’s in New York, Florida and Los Angeles. Of course, WE is targeting a female audience with this latest reality show, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the store’s marketing, public relations, fashion and event-planning departments. As an added bonus, viewers will see how the Thanksgiving Day parade and Macy’s catalog are planned. The question is: will women be interested enough in the ins-and-outs of retail to tune it?

Rescue Me FX has recently announced that the controversial Denis Leary drama Rescue Me has been picked up for a fourth season, which is likely to air in the Spring of 2007.  The show has been doing well in the ratings, enjoying about a 10 percent boost from last season’s numbers.  I’m sure that Denis Leary’s recent Emmy nomination doesn’t hurt, either.  I guess all the talk about the rape that apparently wasn’t hasn’t kept people away from the show—quite the reverse, in fact.  According to FX President John Landgraf, Leary’s character, Tommy Gavin, will get what’s coming to him as this season goes on.  Rescue Me airs in all its politically incorrect glory on Tuesday nights at 10 on FX.

Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra class=Apparently being on a reality show with your spouse is bad for the relationship. Dave Navarro and Carmen Electra are following in the footsteps of Kathy Griffin, Nick Lachey &  Jessica Simpson, and - most likely - Britney Spears and Kevin Federline.

The couple, who starred in MTV’s reality series Till Death Do Us Part: Carmen + Dave, have announced that they are “amicably separating”. Their publicists would not give any more specific information, but Navarro revealed earlier this year that the marriage was suffering due to their busy work schedules.

Electra is most famous for her role on the hit show Baywatch and has recently appeared in films Date Movie and Scary Movie 4.  Navarro, former member of Janes Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers, currently stars on the reality show Rockstar: Supernova.

Both have been married before although Electra’s first wedding is undoubtedly more famous. She wed Dennis Rodman in 1998, only to have the marriage annulled after nine days.

Holly HunterHolly Hunter may star in a new TNT cop drama, Grace. The pilot, which was written by Nancy Miller, will focus on a police detective who attempts to redeem her life after a visit from an angel.

Hunter, who is most known for her film roles, won an Academy Award for best actress for The Piano in 1994 and has been nominated four times total. While she has appeared in numerous TV-movies, this is her first attempt at a television series.

After TNT’s success with crime drama, The Closer - starring another actress famous for her film roles, Kyra Sedgwick - it is no surprise that they are interested in Grace.

Crank_YankersAt least one network still thinks that prank phone calls are funny. MTV2 has announced that it will air eight new episodes of Crank Yankers. Crank Yankers started on Comedy Central in 2002, featuring celebrity guest pranksters whose calls were re-enacted by a variety of puppets. While the show has been absent for some time—Comedy Central cancelled its run after 60 episodes—MTV2 finally gave the green light for more new episodes. Among the crank callers are Jimmy Kimmel, Adam Carolla, Wanda Sykes and Sarah Silverman. While I was not a regular follower of the series, I was a fan of the prank phone calls by Sykes and Silverman. According to Tony DiSanto, Head of Programming at MTV2, “The show’s devious sense of humor fits right in with our creative sensibility… and we’re looking forward to running up the phone bills.” A debut date has yet to be set—and heck, does anybody watch MTV2?

Shannen DohertyThey say that breaking up is hard to do… not with Shannen Doherty’s help. No joke. Shannen Doherty will soon have a show on Oxygen called Breaking Up With Shannen Doherty, where she provides advice on how to end relationships. I’m not sure what makes her an expert in this area, other than the fact that she has two ex-husbands under her belt, but maybe this new gig will give her tarnished reputation a brand new shine. 35-year-old Doherty, famous for her difficult behavior and her role as Brenda on Beverly Hills, 90210 (as well as Charmed), says “A lot of it is a matter of guilt or feeling that attachment or the fear of being alone or all these sort of different emotional things that go into a breakup that sometimes it’s hard for somebody.” Huh? I’m not sure what type of solid advice she’ll be dispensing, but the whole thing reminds me of that Adam Sandler skit on Saturday Night Live called “The Denise Show,” where Sandler’s forlorn character pined for his ex-girlfriend (played by Doherty).
