Survivor Returns, This Time In Panama

CBS has announced the cast for the twelfth season of Survivor, premiering February 2nd. This edition of the reality mega-hit takes place in Panama, and features the standard cast of model-type Gen X and Y-ers, with the occasional middle-aged anomaly to add ‘balance.’ At this early stage, I predict Misty as the winner, a beauty who looks like she’s hiding something under that innocent smile. Of course, we’ll have to wait and see what drama unfolds. Who do you think will make it to the final round? Place your bets below!

Reiser, star of the wildly popular series Mad About You (1992-1999)delighted fans when he announced he would be returning to series television.
CBS has picked up a sitcom pilot from Mad About You star Paul Reiser, which centers on an ambitious young man who takes over the family car dealership in Queens, New York.
Only time will tell if viewers are still Mad About Paul.

It’s January, which means a TV fan’s heaven of all new episodes and mid-season replacements to check out. It also means the most vicious television battle of the year is about to start. In a fight that makes the Olympics pale in comparison, the major TV networks are desperately tossing new shows, and old returning favorites, into the ring. Who will emerge the victor?
NBC has the advantage of the popular comedy Scrubs returning, along with ratings powerhouses such as My Name is Earl and The Office. ABC’s bringing back the beloved Dancing With the Stars, and has the guarantee of massive Super Bowl ratings. CBS has the advantage of the mega-rated CSI franchise. And Fox, of course, might have the best weapon of all in American Idol.
My predictions? Scrubs will sink in the ratings due to its unfortunate move to Tuesday nights, in direct competition with critical darling and fan favorite House, M.D. CSI will continue to be CBS’s reigning show. American Idol will rule its time slot, beating all competition except on the overdrawn ‘results shows,’ where many viewers will wait until the last 10 minutes to tune in.

So last week it looks like that the mildly insane, Jesus loving, and pretty much hated by all, family the Weavers had finally met there match. They were yeilded by the Linz family and took the rural road to the challenge and at some point even stopped for a McFurry. They completely gave up and strolled in last… BUT WAIT! It was a non elimination round so after all that they survive. Why put a yield on a non-elimination round? It seems to make no sense except to knock someone into last but as we’ve seen before and Phil pointed up to the Weavers, teams have come from last to win.
So last week rolls around and low and behold, the Weavers work there way all the way back to the front and almost hit the mat before the Bransens. The strangest thing about this season is 2 times now a team has dropped from first to last with no explination but that, “Due to a production error involving the camera equipment the car battery was drained. A replacement vehicle was provided, but they have fallen into last place.” This happened to the Linz family last week and they went from a comfortable lead to last. It just makes this already bad season just so much worse knowing that the Production team is now affecting the race. Stay tuned…

Three mysterious women make an appearance on Threshold tonight, among them sex symbol Elizabeth Berkley, best know for her roles as Jessie on Saved By The Bell and Nomi in the unintentionally hilarious Showgirls. Berkley plays a woman infected by an alien signal, who is confronted by the team after a violent encounter.

Funny – I always thought that Survivor was getting a bit tired, but what do I know? Apparently most viewers don’t share my sentiments, which is why CBS has already ordered two more seasons of the reality show. This is in addition to the 12th version that has yet to be filmed. It’s interesting how quickly that other Mark Burnett production, The Apprentice, has started to wane over the years yet Survivor keeps going strong. Of course—once Jeff Probst finally gets around to admitting that he is fed up babysitting stinky contestants, Survivor will have officially jumped the shark. But then again, I think that happened a few years ago when women started stripping for peanut butter…

Newsflash! Americans Want Their Sex - And Their Violence, Too.

When Janet Jackson’s breast was exposed during her routine with Justin Timberlake at the 2004 Super Bowl, the world seemed to explode. Suddenly, every channel was carrying censored footage of the event. Newscasters rambled about it. The exposure was the hot topic, everywhere from news stations to the work water cooler.
The reaction was almost violent in its intensity. The FCC fined CBS a record $550,000 for the incident. The NFL swore to never let MTV—surely the most qualified for the position—ever produce a halftime show again. The FCC called the incident “disgusting” and “indecent,” and swore that stricter codes of morality and decency would be enforced upon entertainment media. But who has the right to decide what is decent? More importantly, is it even a relevant issue?
The top 5 television shows in a current Nielsen Rating were:
- CSI
- Desperate Housewives
- Lost
- Without A Trace
- Grey’s Anatomy
Let’s review what the driving force behind each is, shall we?
- Violence. Death. Gross stuff. Really, really gross stuff.
- Sex. Quirky sex. Forbidden sex. And Sex.
- Violence. Death. Sex on the beach.
- Violence. Crime.
- Sex. Doctors doing gross stuff in operating rooms. Doctors having sex right after doing gross stuff in operating rooms.
Obviously, Americans are not as concerned with ‘decency’ as the FCC may like to believe. Perhaps it’s time to step off the soapbox and examine the real evidence: Americans want their sex, and their violence too.

Thursday has got to be the best night of TV for each network. You need 2 TiVos to keep up…
ABC: ABC is the only channel not showing new shows tonight. They are running “Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.” A great movie, but I can’t watch movies with commercials.
CBS: Probably the best 1-2 punch of the night on CBS. At 8:00, Survivor: Guatemala. The tribes are merging and there seems to be some good drama coming from last week’s preview. At 9:00 CSI: Crime Scene Investigation is back from a few weeks off. At 10:00 Without a Trace is a good alternative if you don’t like ER.
NBC: NBC starts with comedy, moves to reality, then transitions to drama. Joey is on at 8:00 followed by the final season of Will & Grace at 8:30. Joey isn’t doing as well as the network had expected, but it’s a funny show in its own right. The Apprentice, the good one, is on at 9:00 and we’ll see the 10th, and possibly the 11th and 12th, person fired tonight. NBC ends the night with the long running ER, with guest star John Leguizamo.
FOX: At 8:00 The OC is back all new after the baseball break. Maybe I’m tainted being from Orange County, but this show is the best. I hope Ryan gets into a fight with some preppy kids tonight. At 9:00 is the new show Reunion. Each episode represents a year in 6 close friends lives from 1986 (high school graduation) until 2006 (20-year reunion). The first episode shows you someone was murdered and one of them is the guilty one. Its a good concept but not sure how’ll they’ll do season 2.
WB: At 8:00 is Smallville followed by Everwood at 9:00. I bet Superman saves the day.
UPN: UPN has a few really good shows (Veronica Mars,) but they always get lost in the shadows of the big networks. Everybody Hates Chris at 8:00 is a perfect example. Its a really funny show, and I’d say its like The Wonder Years and Malcolm in the Middle, if those shows were written by Chris Rock. Very funny if you get a chance to see it. At 8:30 is Love, Inc. followed by Eve at 9:00 and Cuts at 9:30.

ABC: A new episode of George Lopez at 8:00 and the new show Freddie staring Freddie Prinze Jr. and Brian Austin Green from Beverly Hills: 90210. We all missed B.A.G. Lost (9:00) and Invasion (9:30) are both repeats tonight.
CBS: CBS starts with 2 comedys followed by 2 dramas. Still Standing at 8:00 and Yes, Dear at 8:30. Criminal Minds at 9:00 is yet another CSI-type show. For my money I’ll wait for CSI:NY which is on at 10:00. Gary Sinise really makes CSI: NY.
NBC: NBC is on all drama Wednesdays. At 8:00 E-Ring stars Benjamin Bratt as a former Green Beret now working in the Pentagon in this political drama. The Apprentice: Martha Stewart is on at 9:00. This show seemed like a good idea but lacks the punch of the original. NBC finishes the night at 10:00 with the long running crime drama Law & Order.
FOX: FOX starts the night at 8:00 with the season premiere of That ‘70s Show. This season is the first without the star of the show Eric, played by Topher Grace, and it will be interesting to see how long the show can keep going. The show of the night in my opinion is Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy. From the previews they have been showing on FOX for the last couple weeks it seems like one of the mommys completely loses it. Great TV!
WB: One Tree Hill is new at 8:00 with a repeat of Related at 9:00.
UPN: UPN has a new episode of America’s Next Top Model at 8:00 and a repeat of Veronica Mars at 9:00.
No LOST makes Wednesday seem boring but Trading Spouses: Meet Your New Mommy seems like it will make tonight great…
