On Gear Live: iPhone 16e Review: Apple Just Killed the Budget iPhone

ABC didn’t win the night, but it had what the 18-49s wanted to watch: Modern Family. The Emmy-award winning comedy returned last night to its best demos to date. Unfortunately, that half hour wasn’t enough for the network. CBS wound up taking wins in both the viewers and the demos.

Curious to know whether the CBS series $#*! My Dad Says is as hilarious as the Twitter feed it’s based upon? Then you might want to double-check your TiVo now.

Although network execs thought symbols would be the smartest way to get around the profanity in the comedy’s real title, they probably didn’t take into account DVRs when they came up with the name. Even if viewers could remember the exact way CBS chose to arrange the characters, they probably wouldn’t be able to find them on their recording devices.

This is why CBS has now provided us with instructions.

David Letterman definitely knew something was off. But despite what his writer previously reported, he did not know what Joaquin Phoenix was up to last year.

That’s why I’m Still Here actor – who reunited with Letterman Wednesday for the first time since February 2009 – felt it necessary to make amends for his little stunt.

“I think that you’ve interviewed many, many people and I assumed that you would know the difference between a character and a real person, so…  But I apologize. I didn’t.. I hope I didn’t offend you in any way,” the two-time Oscar nominee said.

“Oh, no – oh, no, no, no, I was not offended,” Letterman replied. “I’m telling you, it was so much fun. It was batting practice, you know what I mean? Every one of them was a dinger.”

“Well, we’d hoped to come on a talk show and I was looking for a beat down, and I got one ... I want to thank you for that,” Phoenix laughed.

Several shows saw success on Day 2 of the fall television schedule. Glee earned big numbers despite the lack of a lead-in; NCIS remained strong despite being in its eighth season; and DWTS drew a lot of interest for a simple results show. In the end, CBS was a winner with the viewers while FOX was on top with the demos.

The first official night of the fall television season saw five new shows vying for our attention. Despite good starts from Hawaii Five-0, Mike & Molly and The Event, Dancing with the Stars remained strong for ABC. Meanwhile, Lone Star proved a position post-House doesn’t necessarily mean ratings gold.

Joaquin Phoenix on David Letterman

For a lot of people, Casey Affleck finally admitting that Joaquin Phoenix had been playing a joke was just as surprising as a Lindsay Lohan relapse. But would you be shocked to know that David Letterman was supposedly in on it?

Although Affleck, the director of the “documentary” I’m Still There, recently claimed Letterman was unaware of Phoenix’s “terrific performance,” a Late Show writer tells an entirely different story.

A lot can change in a person’s life in just 19 months—as David Letterman (and his wife) would know. But how has the past year and a half treated Joaquin Phoenix?

Well, we may get an answer to that question when the Oscar nominee returns to the Late Show next week. That’s when Phoenix—who made a memorably awkward appearance on that program in Feb. 2009—is scheduled to promote his film I’m Still Here.

If Joaquin still isn’t the mood to speak, maybe Dave could at least get Phoenix to do a rap? You better set your TiVos for September 22 just in case.
