MONDAY (12/31)
- Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2008 (ABC, 10pm): Dick Clark and Ryan Seacrest will co-host the event. Is Miley Cyrus old enough to be associated with a drinking holiday?
- New Year’s Eve Live (FOX, 11pm): Idol alums Jordin Sparks and Blake Lewis will perform. In just a few short weeks, we’ll start caring about a new batch of idols.
- Tila Tequila’s New Year’s Eve Masquerade (MTV, 11pm): NYC masked ball will include Kid Rock and Mary J. Blige. Has it already been a year since we were forced to watch Nick Lachey and Vanessa Minnillo kiss?
- NBC’s New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly (NBC, 11:35pm): Alicia Keys and Lenny Kravitz will be performing. This may be the first time in a while someone has stayed awake to watch Daly’s show.
- The Biggest Loser (NBC, 8pm): Season 5 premiere. This time around we’ll have teams of two. If we’ve learned anything from The Amazing Race, this could get interesting (and ugly) very soon.
- Just for Laughs (ABC, 8:30pm): Any time a show tells you it’s aiming for laughs, it’s probably setting the bar way too high.
- According to Jim (ABC, 9pm): Season 7 premiere. “A one-hour block of Jim Belushi.” That sentence alone is enough to give me chills.
- Law and Order: SVU (NBC, 10pm): “A Park Avenue socialite’s body is found and Detectives Benson and Stabler initially suspect her wealthy boyfriend.” It simply wouldn’t be an episode of SVU if someone wasn’t being wrongly accused first.
WEDNESDAY (1/2)
- Wife Swap (ABC, 8pm): Season 4 premiere. “A doting mom who heartily endorses her daughter’s involvement in beauty pageants swaps families with a feminist mother who homeschools her daughters to be strong, academic and independent.” I’m obsessed with pageant moms. Obsessed.
- Power of 10 (CBS, 8pm): Season premiere. “Contestants try to predict the results of a national survey to win $10 million.” If I were ever polled, I’d do my best to throw the numbers off. Why would I help someone else win?
- Supernanny (ABC, 9pm): Two-hour season premiere. “Jo meets parents so over-protective, they cannot take their kids for a walk.” What the $%^&?
- Law and Order (NBC, 9pm): Two-hour season premiere. Jeremy Sisto joins the cast of the long-running show. He’ll always be slimy Billy from Six Feet Under to me.
- The Return of Late Night TV (Various): Letterman, Leno, O’Brien and Kimmel all return tonight. Unfortunately this means less late-night hanky panky for husbands everywhere.
THURSDAY (1/3)
- Celebrity Apprentice (NBC, 9pm): Season 7 premiere. Place your bets now: Which washed-up celebrity will The Donald ‘compliment’ first? I’m going with Carol Alt.
- ER (NBC, 10pm): New episode. “A familiar face returns to the ER and confronts a dreaded eventuality.” He/she realizes that the show will continue to survive without them?
FRIDAY (1/4)
- 1 vs. 100 (NBC, 8pm): Season 2 premiere. The first episode will feature appearances by actors Barry Williams (The Brady Bunch) and Dawn Wells (Gilligan’s Island). I guess we know which demographic the show’s targeting now.
- Women’s Murder Club (ABC, 9pm): New episode. “The club investigates the decapitation of a wine broker.” Would it be fair to say the victim was uncorked?
- Friday Night Lights (NBC, 9pm): New episode. “Landry and Tyra attempt to put the murder behind them.” I hear men can forget anything when they are busy watching football.
- Las Vegas (NBC, 10pm): New episode. “Delinda cooks up plans to find a chef for the casino restaurant.” I have a feeling this is where the next Hell’s Kitchen winner will go.
SATURDAY (1/5)
- New Hampshire Debates (ABC, 7pm EST): Charles Gibson will moderate back-to-back Democratic and Republican debates. This will potentially be more action-packed than the NFL playoffs.
SUNDAY(1/6)
- American Gladiators (NBC, 9pm): **Special premiere (will regularly air on Mondays)** So are we supposed to root for the challengers or the gladiators? I can never quite decide.
- Desperate Housewives (ABC, 9pm): New episode. “Lynette faces the possibility that her family may not have survived.” It’s not like we ever see the twins anymore anyway.
- The Wire (HBO, 9pm): The fifth and final season. Maybe I’ll have a chance to catch up now!
- The L Word (Showtime, 9pm): Season 5 premiere. BTW - whatever happened to Queer as Folk?
- I Love New York Reunion (VH1, 9pm): New York and Tailor Made. If that doesn’t say ‘Happily Ever After’, I’m not sure what does.
- Cashmere Mafia (ABC, 10pm): Season premiere. **Special premiere (will regularly air on Wednesdays)** If it looks and smells like Sex and the City, you can blame/thank creator Darren Star.
