Rob Lowe to Purchase Miramax?

Rob Lowe is said to be involved in a bid to buy Miramax Films.
The Brothers & Sisters actor has been linked to a deal by Tom Barrack’s Colony Capital, which is among a number of bidders for the production company, responsible for movies including The Queen and No Country for Old Men.
“It’s fair to say Lowe’s a friend of Colony and he’ll be involved in some larger sense. They value his opinion and he has ideas,” a source told The New York Post.
Talks with Harvey and Bob Weinstein - who co-founded Miramax and are responsible for the release of films such as Pulp Fiction and Shakespeare in Love - have faltered, meaning Colony has taken the lead in discussions, which may conclude in the next few days. Colony is said to have considered placing a bid of between $600 million and $700 million for the company, while the Weinstein’s earlier bid was thought to be around $550 million.
According to TMZ, Lowe, Barrack and construction mogul Ron Tutor plan to turn Miramax into a “multi-platform media company, similar to DreamWorks.”
Upcoming films set to be released by Miramax include The Switch starring Jennifer Aniston and Jason Bateman and Last Night with Keira Knightley and Sam Worthington.

Avatar Adds 8 Minutes, Coming Back to Theaters

Avatar is returning!
The blockbuster hit that shattered ticket sale records will come back to the theaters on August 27, to be shown exclusively in 3-D. The reason behind all the fuss? A whopping eight additional minutes have been added to the flick. Most movies would release a Special Edition DVD to celebrate the achievement…not Avatar.
You’d almost think the film didn’t make enough money the first time around. Avatar: Special Edition is being highly-touted by director James Cameron, who said viewers will get to see “new creatures and action scenes.”

Sherlock Holmes Sequel to Shoot in October

Sherlock Holmes 2 will start shooting earlier than planned. Filming for the Guy Ritchie-directed sequel had originally been due to take place in December, but now Jude Law - who played Dr. Watson in the first movie - says cameras could now start rolling in October
“It looks likely that we’re going to shoot the second Sherlock Holmes in October,” Law said.
However, Jude says he doesn’t know the storyline yet but is looking forward to seeing what novel about the detective Ritchie and his team are going to adapt to the big screen: “I don’t know yet where the story will go, but there are a lot of Sherlock Holmes novels to choose from.”
Although the first Sherlock Holmes movie - which also starred Robert Downey Jr. - was successful at the box office, Jude insists it didn’t bother him whether it was or not. “I had so much fun making Sherlock Holmes that the question of how much money it would make just wasn’t one of my priorities. Of course I was really pleased it was such a success but mostly because that will give me the opportunity to work with Robert and Guy again.”

Leonardo DiCaprio’s Inception Experience

Leonardo DiCaprio believes Inception is a film that needs to be “experienced.”
The 35-year-old actor - who plays Dom Cobb in the Christopher Nolan-directed sci-fi action epic - admits it is a difficult film to explain, but his trust in Nolan made him overcome any fears.
“This is a high concept film, and it’s a film that’s working on a multitude of levels simultaneously. And it’s kind of a hard film to pitch. It’s more of a film that you really need to experience,” he said. “Chris is absolutely one of the best filmmakers out there and the truth is that it’s hard to enter his mind in certain instances when he’s talking about how this film is all going to piece together conceptually. But what he works with you on as an actor, and what’s so vitally important, is the emotional narrative of your character and what your character means in that plot.”

Box Office Breakdown: Twilight Eclipses Competition

Summit Entertainment saw fireworks at the theaters this holiday weekend.
The four-day frame ended with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse hauling in approximately $83.6 million. Although the David Slade-directed installment easily dethroned reigning champ Toy Story 3, the sequel actually failed to surpass the previous outing. Last fall, The Twilight Saga: New Moon grossed $178.9 million over six days. Eclipse, on the other hand, only raised $176.3 million since opening last Wednesday.
Meanwhile, scathing reviews didn’t keep The Last Airbender from raking up a sizable share of the box office pot. M. Night Shyamalan’s take on Nickelodeon series fought off critics to earn $51.8 million over four days. Overall, the $150 million production has totaled $69.3 million domestically since its Thursday debut.

Marlon Wayans, Chris Rock and Adam Sandler Team for Richard Pryor Flick

Chris Rock and Adam Sandler are producing a new biopic focusing on the life of well-loved comedian Richard Pryor, who inspired countless comics during his career. Pryor appeared in films and on stage from the 1960s to his 2005 death, though he is best known for his ribald standup routines.
Richard Pryor: Is It Something I Said details Pryor’s early life, rise to fame and his serious drug problems, which led to the famous “freebasing incident” of 1981. Marlon Wayans will portray Pryor in the flick, though the role was originally given to Eddie Murphy. Murphy passed on the movie due to “creative differences.” Rumor has it that Pryor himself, who passed away in 2005 at 65, wanted Mike Epps to play the role.
Chris Rock said that Marlon’s screen test was amazing, and Wayans himself stated “I’m ready” to play the part.

Christopher Nolan Hesitant About 3-D For Batman

Inception director Christopher Nolan is “wary” of 3-D.
The director admits he still doesn’t think the technology has been advanced enough to properly suit cinematic releases, but is considering giving in to fan demand for the style to be used in the next Batman movie.
“Until we get rid of the glasses, or until we really massively improve the process, I’m a little wary of it. But we’ll be looking at it, and if that’s what audiences are demanding from blockbusters - and we’re making blockbusters - then it’s something we’ll address.”
Although considering using it himself, Christopher isn’t a fan of 3-D movies and believes a good movie should be so “well-shot and well-projected” that they don’t need to use the new filming technique.
“I’m taking a bit of a wait-and-see attitude towards 3-D. It’s come and gone many times over the years. I don’t particularly enjoy watching films in 3-D films because I think that a well-shot and well-projected film have a very three-dimensional quality to it. So I’m somewhat sceptical of the technology.”
Filming of the currently unnamed movie, which will star Christian Bale in the title role and be Christopher’s last for the franchise, is due to start in March 2011.
