On Gear Live: Apple’s $400,000,000 Secret to Saving the Planet

If playing a washed up country singer could earn Jeff Bridges an Academy Award, what could it possibly do for ?

In Country Strong, Gwyneth plays Kelly Canter, a troubled musician who tries to get her career back with help from her husband/manager (played by real-life country star ). Paltrow, who previously demonstrated her vocal abilities in Duets, also does her own singing in this film.

The movie—which also features Tron: Legacy‘s Garrett Hedlund and Gossip Girl‘s Leighton Meester—opens in limited release on December 22.

Resident Evil: Afterlife

Who says the third time’s the charm?

—the fourth movie in that sci-fi series—topped the box office this weekend with franchise-breaking numbers. The movie, which was offered in 3D, had the best Evil debut to date. (Yes - higher ticket prices did play into this.) Afterlife‘s $26.7 million take surpassed the bar set by Resident Evil: Extinction in 2007. (That outing opened to $23.7 million.)

Since Resident was the only new wide release, the other notable events occurred outside the Top Ten. , starring Katie Holmes and Josh Duhamel, opened in limited release with a $45,527 debut. More importantly, the movie averaged $22,764 per theater—the best number for all films over the weekend. In comparison, I’m Still Here—featuring a disheveled Joaquin Phoenix—only had a $5,087 per screen average.

was probably the second most-talked about person at the MTV Video Music Awards this year (second only to Lady Gaga, of course).

West was the closing performer of the night. He figured heavily in Chelsea Handler’s monologue and Taylor Swift’s performance. He even debuted his theatrical film trailer—though it was probably unlike anything you’ve ever seen before.

So, remember when Joaquin Phoenix freaked out, quit acting and made an @$$ of himself on Late Night with David Letterman? Well, the documentary he was filming during that time () has been picked up, distributed and released…and the critics have already had their way with it. Ready to hear what the experts have to say?

E! Online calls the film an “alleged documentary,” saying it is “either a nightmarish depiction of a mid-meltdown narcissist, or a brilliantly deadpan put-on to make the late Andy Kaufman proud and Sacha Baron Cohen jealous.” While that sounds like something of an insult, the review goes on to call the flick “frequently hilarious,” which is far from all bad.

Whatever else the film may be, E! did not seem to take it too seriously, praising actors who appear in the film that were “in on the joke,” and for pulling off the “act.”

Those who have read already have a pretty good idea of what the movie will be like.

In a recent interview, the film’s main trio of stars (Emma Watson, Rupert Grint and Daniel Radcliffe) talked about some of the stunning visuals. Harry Potter himself spoke of the “huge pile of rubble” in the Hogwart’s courtyard and Voldemort “brutalizing and desperately trying to kill a 17-year-old boy.” Rupert Grint says the movie begins to turn “into a bit of a war film. The castle is on fire with rubble and bodies littered everywhere.”

But only revealed something truly juicy: a never-before-seen scene that was written especially for the screen. You can’t read this one in a book, folks. Find out what Hermione Granger revealed after the jump…

Ben Affleck in State of Play

“I don’t want to hold office. Every day that seems like a worse and worse job to have. Look at the level of political discourse now. It’s very depressing to me. I did a lot of research down in D.C. when I did , and it’s not unlike Hollywood. It’s a one-horse town. Everyone’s jockeying with one another for power, prestige, and image and they’ll stab each other in the back as fast as they can. The only difference is the stakes are a bit higher, which makes it sadder.”

-Actor , who played a congressman in State of Play, explaining why he doesn’t see a future in politics.

The American

Although it lacked Jessica Alba, Lindsay Lohan and Robert De Niro, did have two things Machete didn’t: George Clooney and a box office win.

Despite only grossing $13.2 million over the weekend ($16.3 million since Wednesday), the Focus Features entry hit its target. The movie - which was produced for approximately $20 million - managed to top the Robert Rodriguez-actioner by less than $2 million. The American also became Clooney’s best opener - outside of any Brad Pitt-related project - since The Perfect Storm in 2000.

, based on a trailer included in the film Grindhouse, came very close to matching the earlier movie. The Danny Trejo starrer debuted to a modest $11.4 million—about $200,000 short of Grindhouse‘s premiere in 2007.
