Which Movie Superstar Could Play Barack Obama?

Hollywood considers nothing off-limits in the world of film, even the presidency. Some lucky men have played United States leaders both fictional and biographical. Henry Ford became Abe Lincoln, Anthony Hopkins was Nixon and Josh Brolin was W. (to name a few). But who would Hollywood pick to become the first on-screen Barack Obama?
During a recent red carpet event, Will Smith said that he would take on the role if asked. But while Smith’s comments were said in his usual jocular fashion, I’ve absolutely fallen in love with the idea - and I really see this one happening. Smith, already one of Hollywood’s most bankable leading men, has already proven that he can take on any kind of role. But would his big name serve to crowd out Obama’s? Should Hollywood cast instead a man who is relatively unknown to moviegoers instead?

Kevin James: His Time to Shine?

The success of Paul Blart: Mall Cop over the weekend proves two things quite solidly: one, Kevin James, all by himself, can bring people out to the theaters and; two, I just can’t predict what moviegoers will watch. I have to admit, when I saw the promos for this one I was pretty much rolling my eyes - but in my defense I only saw the short version.
I shouldn’t have been surprised. After all, James always has been hilarious. The portly comedian first came to widespread public attention when he became TV’s King of Queens, a sitcom which celebrated a nine-year run on network. By any measure, that’s great success.

For most of us, getting tickets to Sundance screenings is just as hard as getting access to Barack Obama’s inauguration. Fortunately, we can set aside the Uggs and watch several of this year’s films from the comfort of our warm homes.
Late last week, a list of entries from the 2009 festival were made available as free downloads. The ten short films - “representing a variety of countries, styles, genres, and stories” - can all be accessed through iTunes.
Act quick! The titles will only be offered through January 25th.

Watchmen fanboys - you can now take a collective sigh of relief. The fight between Mommy and Daddy is now over.
Although it looked as if March 6th would be scratched off the calendar, 20th Century Fox and Warner Bros. agreed to play nice and settled their differences. The last-minute negotiations kept the film in the theaters and the parties out of the courtroom.
For its part, Fox will get a upfront cash settlement to cover its original investment fees and its legal costs. (According to sources, that check amount is somewhere in the $5-$10 million range.) The studio will also will also get 5-8.5% gross participation in the first film and a percentage in any possible sequels. In turn, Warner will get to continue as planned with only their logo on the project.

Ever since news leaked about Mickey Rourke’s possible Iron Man 2 appearance, the casting scoop has been coming fast and furious.
Despite Samuel L. Jackson’s brief appearance as Nick Fury at the end of Iron Man, the Spirit actor recently told the LA Times that he might not be participating in the next feature - or the already announced Avengers franchise - after all.
“There was a huge kind of negotiation that broke down. I don’t know. Maybe I won’t be Nick Fury. Maybe somebody else will be Nick Fury or maybe Nick Fury won’t be in it. There seems to be an economic crisis in the Marvel Comics world so [they’re saying to me], ‘We’re not making that deal.’”
If true, Jackson would be the second person to lose out because of financial matters. Last October, contract negotiations were cited as the main reason behind Terrence Howard’s replacement.

In the first few weeks of 2009, Oprah Winfrey has revealed a great deal to her audience. Not only is mad at herself for falling off the weight wagon (again), she was once recently told “No.”
On Tuesday’s episode of her talk show, Winfrey told recent Golden Globe nominee Meryl Streep some surprising news. She asked director John Patrick Shanley to audition for Meryl’s film, Doubt.

Lil Kim isn’t too happy with the film Notorious, and I’m not referring to Hitchcock’s 1946 joint. The diminutive singer will be characterized in an upcoming biopic of rapper Notorious B.I.G. - she says in a “false portrayal.”
Angela Bassett, Derek Luke, Anthony Mackie, Naturi Naughton and Antonique Smith will star with newcomer Jamal Woolard, who plays the title role in the flick. Currently, Notorious is scheduled to hit theaters on the 16th of January. But Lil Kim says the movie is sensationalized, as films are wont to be.

Maybe the Minnesota weather is to blame for Renee Zellweger’s disheveled hair last night…
In her upcoming romantic comedy, Renee plays a consultant from Miami with a temporary assignment in the Midwest state. Of course, it’s always nice to have a warm body around when you’re cold. Thankfully for the Oscar winner, Harry Connick, Jr. is there to keep her company.
New in Town - also starring J.K. Simmons and Frances Conroy - opens January 20.
