Box Office Breakdown: New Life for Oscar Contenders

Nominations? Clint Eastwood doesn’t need any stinkin’ nominations…
Although the 78-year-old was recently overlooked by the Academy, the actor/director still got some respect from the paying public. This past weekend, Gran Torino landed softly into third place and, most importantly, topped the actual Best Picture contenders.
But that’s not to say a nomination is pointless. Last week’s #10, Slumdog Millionaire, jumped 5 positions this week after nabbing 10 nods on Thursday. (It also bested Torino’s per screen average.) Meanwhile, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - thanks to 13 nominations - found itself reentering the Top Ten.

Dominic Monaghan Talks About the Lord of the Rings Prequels

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: MGM, New Line, Adaptation, Adventure, Sequels, Casting, Rumors, Scripts,
While he’s quick to point out that The Hobbit is “not Lord of the Rings,” Dominic Monaghan told MTV that he is open to joining the upcoming adaptations.
Monaghan, who played Merry in the three LOTR films, said neither the fans nor his former coworkers should worry about their popular trilogy being diluted. “It’s being produced by Peter Jackson, who obviously made the first films, and his special-effects company are making it,” he explained. “It’s directed by Guillermo del Toro, who I think, outside of Peter Jackson, would be the number-one person to give this any amount of the tenderness that it deserves. Obviously, Ian McKellen’s going to be back for it, and Andy Serkis is going to be back for it.”

Dakota Fanning Rumored for New Moon Role

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Adaptation, Drama, Romance, Science Fiction, Casting, Celeb News, Rumors, Upcoming Releases,
UPDATE: Dakota acknowledges that she is in discussions for the role.
Now that the Vanessa Hudgens rumor has been debunked, we’re moving on to an actress with a bit more film cred.
If the E! Online report is true, Dakota Fanning may be joining the cast of the Twilight sequel. According to sources, the Man on Fire star has been offered a role without even having to audition.
If negotiations go well, the 14-year-old will play Jane, a member of the Volturi vampires. While it may be hard to imagine Fanning as a bloodsucker, the character has been described as a petite blonde with a childlike voice and “Botticelli angel-like face.”
Production on New Moon is scheduled to begin in March.

Despite no major wins for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button at Jan. 11’s Golden Globes, the film lead all entries at this morning’s Academy Award nominations. The Brad Pitt feature will go into next month’s ceremony with 13 opportunities to walk away with at least one statue. (Slumdog Millionaire will have 10 chances.)
Here are some of the noteworthy mentions from today’s press conference:
- Kate Winslet (The Reader) - a double-winner just a few weeks ago - only received one nomination this morning. Meryl Streep will only get one chance as well for her role in Doubt.
- Although it wasn’t represented at the Globes, Frozen River was recognized several times today.
- Heath Ledger‘s nomination (on the anniversary of his death!) was expected; The Dark Knight‘s omission was a disappointment.
- Four acting nods for Doubt didn’t equate to an honor for the film.
- Several pleasant announcements in the Best Actor/Supporting Actor categories: Richard Jenkins (The Visitor), Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road) and Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder). Shannon got the only major nom for his picture.

If you felt yourself cringing when you heard about the Karate Kid remake, you weren’t the only one. Nevertheless, the original’s star is still finding one reason to smile.
In a interview with MTV, Ralph Macchio admitted that it feels “pretty good that so many people are angry” about the redo. The 47-year-old (yes, he’s that old) said it’s been great to see such an “outpouring” of response from fans of the 1984 classic.

Mall Cop? Mall Cop?
As strange as it may sound, Kevin James just took down Clint Eastwood, Notorious B.I.G. and a serial killer to become the current box office champ. Paul Blart: Mall Cop‘s $40 million take was the second biggest ever for a January opener. (Cloverfield took in $46.1 million at this same time last year.) The comedy was also partially responsible for giving the industry its largest MLK weekend of all time.
