Should Heath Ledger win the Academy Award later this month, you can expect a passionate acceptance speech from that Kodak stage.
Over the past few weeks, director Christopher Nolan and Gary Oldman have stepped in on Ledger’s behalf. Now someone else will have the honor.
According to Nolan, members of Heath’s family will be the ones accepting any posthumous Oscar given to the Dark Knight star. Although it’s not known which relatives might take the mic, Ledger’s father, mother and sister have all spoken to the media before.
The 81st Annual Academy Awards will air live Sunday, February 22nd on ABC.

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences are Taken with Liam Neeson

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Fox Searchlight, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Warner Bros, Action, Adventure, Drama, Family, Horror, Romance, Sequels, Comedy, Thrillers, Box Office, Lists,

While it would seem logical to find a female-oriented movie on top after Super Bowl Sunday, an action thriller proved there was more than enough testosterone to go around. Taken, starring Oscar-nominee Liam Neeson, took in $24.7 million making it the second best opener ever during the same football period. (Last year’s Hannah Montana concert film grossed $31.1 million.)
Meanwhile, a romantic comedy starring an actual Oscar winner, failed to do what counterprogramming options are meant to do: score a touchdown. New in Town, starring Renee Zellweger and Harry Connick Jr., earned $6.7 million and a disappointing 8th place. (Apparently Academy Awards don’t guarantee future success.) The romantic comedy raked in about 1/2 as much as Zellweger’s Leatherheads did…and that’s saying a lot.

As if the names “Quentin Tarantino” and “Brad Pitt” weren’t already enough for us.
In a recent interview with MTV, B.J. Novak provided an insider’s perspective on Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds. (The 29-year-old plays Private First Class Utivich.) Although he admits the WWII-era film is a bit hard to describe, the Office star didn’t have any difficulty heaping praise on one of the “coolest movies” he’s “ever seen or been a part of.”

New Moon News

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Adaptation, Adventure, Science Fiction, Casting, Filmmaking, Upcoming Releases,
Melissa Rosenberg, screenwriter for the Twilight movie series, was cornered by People magazine at the recent Annual Directors Guild of America Awards…and she offered up a few tidbits on the casting for the upcoming New Moon movie.
“Taylor Lautner will be back as Jacob Black. I can tell you the original cast will all be coming back,” Rosenberg told reporters. She also offered some insight into the gossip that links Vanessa Hudgens with the film series. “I had heard Vanessa Hudgens was going up for the part of Leah,” she stated. Leah Clearwater is a werewolf in the books. “But at the moment, the part of Leah doesn’t happen until the third movie,” Rosenberg added.
The writer is also very pleased with New Moon director Chris Weitz, saying that CGI animals “will be a big part of New Moon. I’m delighted we have someone who’s so expert at that.”

The Thing: Universal - apparently feeling the winter blast - has decided to redo the classic John Carpenter film. In the 1982 version, research teams in Antarctica are killed off by a shape-shifting alien. The reimaging, which will be directed by Matthijs Van Heijningen, will be based off the same source material as the Kurt Russell vehicle. Ron Moore, Battlestar Galactica‘s executive producer, is in charge of the script.

Robert Pattinson Trades in Fangs for Mustache in Little Ashes

Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Period, Trailers, Upcoming Releases,
Even though New Moon won’t be on the books for several months, you can still get another Robert Pattinson fix now.
Later this spring, the 22-year-old heartthrob will set aside the blood sucking and pick up a brush for his role as Salvador Dali. Pattinson will play an 18-year-old version of the famous surrealist painter.
The film, set in 1922, will focus on the relationship between the eccentric artist and his two friends, poet/dramatist Federico García Lorca (Javier Beltran) and filmmaker Luis Buñel (Matthew McNulty). It will also explore the attraction between Lorca and Dali.
Little Ashes is scheduled to open on March 27.

Angelina Jolie out of the Tomb Raider Loop

Posted by K.C. Morgan Categories: Warner Bros, Action, Adventure, Sequels, Casting,
It’s been confirmed: there will be a third Tomb Raider film. But don’t expect to see the franchise you’ve come to know with the new flick, for everything’s about to change in the world of Lara Croft.
For starters, Croft’s origins will be changed (the English aristocrat thing? That’s probably going to disappear). She’ll also have new love interests to woo and villains to fight.
Oh, yeah, and Angelina Jolie’s not involved.
Though no one has officially been cast for the role, many are banking on Megan Fox. The Tomb Raider video game franchise has garnered over $1 billion worldwide, the two previous Tomb Raider films notwithstanding.
