Spike Lee Criticizes the Coens, Eastwood
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Drama, Period, Celebrity Gossip, Upcoming Releases,
While working to promote his own movie, director Spike Lee recently spent a little time making jabs at some of his fellow comrades.
Lee was at the Cannes Film Festival to talk about his upcoming project, Miracle at St. Anna. The Italian-set war film - currently in post-production - focuses on four black American soldiers during WWII.
While discussing the film, Spike chose to compare his artistic choices to those of three Academy Award winners. When the topic of violence came up, Lee told the press that unlike Joel and Ethan Coen, he treats death respectfully:
“I always treat life and death with respect, but most people don’t. Look, I love the Coen brothers; we all studied at NYU. But they treat life like a joke. Ha ha ha. A joke. It’s like, ‘Look how they killed that guy! Look how blood squirts out the side of his head!’ I see things different than that.”

Jake Gyllenhaal is the Prince of Persia
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Disney, Adaptation, Adventure, Period, Casting, Upcoming Releases,
Although it was earlier reported that Orlando Bloom was set to star in a new trilogy, it seems that is not the case. It’s just been announced that Jake Gyllenhaal has been cast as the lead in the big-screen adaptation of Prince of Persia.
In the movie, Gyllenhaal will play Dastan, a sixth-century prince who must work with a “feisty” princess to prevent a villain from possessing the “Sands of Time.” Gemma Arteron (Quantum of Solace) will be playing Tamina, the woman who joins forces with Dastan.
The fantasy adventure is based off the popular video game that was released in 1989. With both Disney and producer Jerry Bruckheimer (Pirates of the Caribbean) behind the project, it’s hoped this film will eventually become another franchise.
Production on Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is scheduled to begin in July.

Mixed Reviews for Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Paramount, Action, Adventure, Sequels, Upcoming Releases,
The U.S. premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is still 3 days away, but an audience at Cannes got its first glimpse yesterday. Here’s a sampling of the reviews being posted by critics today:
- Associated Press: “Except for the opening — which literally starts the film off with a bang — and a couple of dazzling chase sequences, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull is about as unfocused and meandering as the title itself.”
- Entertainment Weekly: “There’s joy and a middle-aged playfulness to the best of Steven Spielberg’s unlikely sequel. And I mean that as a full compliment: All the movieman’s themes are here, his interests, obsessions, trademark strengths as a cinematic storyteller, and Spielbergian ‘tells,’ too, with hubcap and sideview mirror reflections dating back over 35 years to Duel.”

Box Office Breakdown: Prince Caspian Crowned the Winner
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: 20th Century Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Paramount, Sony, Universal, Warner Bros, Action, Adaptation, Adventure, Drama, Independent, Romance, Sequels, Comedy, Box Office, Lists, New Releases,
Although it failed to reach expectations, The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian was still mighty enough to take down Robert Downey Jr. this past weekend. The Disney sequel pulled in over $55 million dollars and earned itself a first place finish. Unfortunately, the film’s gross was slightly disappointing given the first installment’s take; The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe opened at $65.6 million back in 2005.
In other adaptation news, Warner Bros.’ Speed Racer continued to fall behind in the race. The colorful adventure slipped another notch into fourth, right behind What Happens in Vegas. Meanwhile, Iron Man‘s $31.8 million total pushed the film past the $200 million range.

Real Wall-E appears in Los Angeles
Posted by Andru Edwards Categories: Disney, Adventure, Animation, Family, Comedy, Upcoming Releases,
Pixar‘s Wall-E is set to hit theaters in just a little over a month, so you just know that the hype is set to ramp up leading up to the opening, right? Leave it up to Pixar to take a rusty, old, childish robot and make it so cute that we immediately buy into it and start posting videos of its appearance around town. I mean, just watching the video above, don’t you just feel like you have to adopt the little guy and take him home? I’m betting this will be my favorite Pixar movie since Monsters Inc. How about you? You anticipating this one?
Donnie Darko Sequel Begins Filming
Posted by Robin Paulson Categories: 20th Century Fox, Adventure, Horror, Mystery, Science Fiction, Sequels, Thrillers, Casting, Upcoming Releases,
In unfortunate sequel news, newbie director Chris Fisher (Rampage: The Hillside Strangler Murders, Nightstalker) has taken on the S. Darko project, the follow-up to Richard Kelly’s cult classic Donnie Darko. Production began today in Los Angeles.
Fox has, for unclear reasons, picked up this sequel, which focuses primarily on Samantha Darko’s road trip to Los Angeles with her friend. Along the way, they are haunted by mysterious visions marked by meteorites and rabbits. Samantha is, of course, the younger sister of Donnie’s (the irksome dancer in Sparkle Motion) and will be 18 years old in the film, apparently now a troubled teen in a broken home.
Daveigh Chase is so far the only original cast member reprising her role as Samantha. Newcomer Briana Evigan (Step Up 2: The Streets), Gossip Girl‘s Ed Westwick, and Dragonball Z star Justin Chatwin have also signed on for this awful production.
Apparently the film’s sales group, Velvet Octopus, is expecting the film to become a box office favorite once it hits theaters in 2009. If anyone truly appreciates Richard Kelly’s masterpiece, they will opt not to see this flagrant movie next year.

Fahrenheit 9/11 Sequel Planned
Posted by Veronica Santiago Categories: Documentary, Sequels, Upcoming Releases,
Michael Moore - never one to shy away from controversy - is back at it again. The writer/producer/director has chosen to follow up last year’s Sicko with a sequel to his 2004 hit, Fahrenheit 9/11.
While this movie will chronologically pick up where the original left off, it will not be about one specific event. It will instead have a much broader focus. According to the chief for Paramount Vantage (one of the two companies Moore is partnering with), the film “is going to tackle what’s going on in the world, and America’s place in it.”
Those already worried about the timing of Oliver Stone’s upcoming Bush project should feel at ease with this new documentary. Moore is not planning to release the film until sometime next year - long after the presidential election is over.
