Hellboy II: The Golden Army

Apparently moviegoers were simply not interested in meeting anyone named Dave.

This past weekend, Eddie Murphy’s latest effort debuted in a disappointing 7th place. Fox’s pulled in only $5.2 million, the third worst opening total for the comedian. (Holy Man pulled in $5.1 million in 1998; The Adventures of Pluto Nash scraped up $2.2 million in 2002.)

Dave‘s poor performance gave two other entries plenty of room at the top of the charts. earned approximately $11 million more than the original 2004 film. The sequel’s $34.5 million haul also narrowly edged out last week’s winner, Hancock, and gave director Guillermo del Toro a first place berth. Meanwhile, the Journey to the Center of the Earth‘s $21 million was good enough for third place.

Shrek and Donkey

Yesterday, we took a look at the ever to grace the big screen. But where would characters like Emperor Palpatine and Lex Luthor be without their counterparts: the movie heroes?

Today, we’ll look at the greatest heroes who ever shined on film. Will your favorite make the cut?

Shrek (Shrek, 2001; Shrek 2, 2004; Shrek the Third, 2007) voice of : He is the epitome of an unlikely hero and almost unintentionally saves the day every time. In true hero fashion, he does it all with a witty line and an unwillingness to seriously harm evildoers. What cements this animated character as a true movie hero? No hero can save the day without his trusty side quick, and Shrek has the best: Donkey (voice of Eddie Murphy).

Sex and the City Movie

I think you could probably file this under the “No Duh” category. During the Television Critics Association press tour yesterday, HBO’s programming head told everyone what they already knew: There’s talk about a sequel out there.

According to Michael Lombardo, “There’s enormous interest by Warner Bros. and New Line, and we’re trying to put that together now. Everyone associated with the project was liberated by the enthusiasm of the fans.”

But fans should, of course, not anticipate forming another group outing anytime soon. There’s still quite a few matters that need to be settled first - like a script, signed contracts…and how about possibly a reason? Is there a point where we should just let these girls walk off in their stilettos quietly? What could possibly happen to Carrie and Big next time? Will he decide that he likes Napa better than New York City?

Robert Downey Jr.We now know who Team Ferrell/Cohen will eventually have to face off against at the box office: .

Just last week, we told you that former Talledega Nights co-stars Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen would be reuniting for film about Sherlock Holmes. Unfortunately, their Columbia Pictures comedy did not have a director or release date attached to it yet. It also faced comparison to a similar project being formed at another studio.

Now Warner Bros. has announced that will be donning the detective’s cap for their take on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novels. While there will most likely be tone differences between the two movies, Downey’s version will reportedly be “less stuffy” than what we have seen in the past.

The Guy Ritchie film will start production in October (before the Columbia version) in hopes of a October 2009 opening.

Heath Ledger as the Joker

The Dark Knight has yet to hit theaters, yet it’s already shaping up to be ’s greatest flick. Critics are raving, the trailers primarily feature him in grotesque make-up, and Moviefone has added him to their list of great on-screen villains. There’s only one problem: I don’t agree with Moviefone’s list.

The list of Top 25 movie villains includes old favorites like Khan (Star Trek II), Cruella de Ville (101 Dalmations), Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford (Mommie Dearest), Jimmy Cagney as the Public Enemy (love, love, love Cagney), Freddy Krueger and Michael Myers. On Moviefone’s list, Heath’s Joker comes in at Number 5, trumped by Hannibal Lecter, the Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz), Darth Vader and Lord Voldemort.

And I think Moviefone is wrong. While there were some on the list who were truly chilling - as Annie Wilkes in Misery, for instance - others were left off the countdown completely. So with no further delay I will name the on-screen villains I found the most frightening and fearsome in big-screen flicks. None of my villains made it to Moviefone’s list and I can’t imagine why.

Red Dawn

Almost 25 years after it was originally released, it’s been announced that is now up for the inevitable remake. Wolverines!

In 1984, the Cold War era movie - the first movie to be rated PG-13 - saw a group of high schoolers head for the woods after the Soviets and Cubans invaded America. With the weapons they had stockpiled, the teens did their best to wreak havoc on the foreign troops. (You can read my review of the Red Dawn Collector’s Edition here.)

Believing there’s no better time to revisit a story about an invasion on U.S. soil, MGM has greenlighted an update of its cult classic.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Here are some possible suggestions for your upcoming weekend:

Ingrid Betancourt

Even though they’ve had less than a week to become familiar with their family members once again, former Colombian hostages are now facing the prospect of having their story told on the big screen.

Last week, fourteen people - including three American contractors - were rescued from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia in a surprise mission. Some of those freed had been held captive since 2002.

Batman & RobinWhile I’m sure Leatherheads is probably something would eventually like to forget, Batman & Robin will probably serve as his most regrettable big-screen project. And that’s a mistake Christian Bale would not like to repeat for himself.

While Bale has made it known he’d be up for a trilogy, he is apparently opposed to introducing a sidekick. According to Starpulse, the intense actor claims he would rather hang up his cape than work alongside another masked man.

“If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I’ll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work.”

I’m sure if George had the same clout then that he does now, he would have sad the exact same thing.
