Johnny Depp and Tim Burton: Together Again

Over the years, many actors have come and gone. Few have had the staying power of Johnny Depp, who continues to get high-profile roles and enjoys his pick of scripts. The raven-haired thespian has showcased his acting talents over the years with an array of somewhat odd roles, preferring darker-toned movies rather than lighthearted comedy. A long-standing director-actor relationship and Depp’s penchant for the unordinary makes him perfect for Tim Burton’s Sweeney Todd, an adaptation based on the successful Broadway play.
The movie, set in London more than one hundred years ago, features Depp as none other than Todd, a deranged barber bent on murderous revenge. DreamWorks and Warner Bros. both lent studios to create this tale of cannibalism, revenge, death, and darkness. By the way, it’s a musical.
Sweeney Todd hits theaters December 21.

Box Office Breakdown: Jessica Alba Can’t Keep Audiences Awake

There’s nothing like a good snub to restore your faith in moviegoers.
Although Awake was the only new wide release this past weekend, discerning audiences kept it from succeeding by default. (NOTE: Cute squirrels will always trump Jessica Alba.) The movie, also co-starring Star Wars’ Hayden Christensen, opened with a dismal $6 million - less than half of what Alba’s last stellar film, Good Luck Chuck, did. (The latter opened at $13.7 million.) I wonder if this currently makes Jessica Biel the most successful Jessica out there.
Aside from Awake’s entry, the rest of the Top Ten changed very little from last week. Enchanted refused to budge from its perch and earned another $16 million over the past three days. Meanwhile, Beowulf surged back up a notch, trading spots with holiday flick, This Christmas.
Although the box office numbers were unspectacular overall, we can expect big changes in just a few days; that’s when New Line’s The Golden Compass makes its debut.

What’s in ‘The Mist’?

Actual mist is created with suspended droplets of moisture, and is not to be confused with fog (which has greater visibility) or haze (which is a different color altogether). And Stephen King, pop kitsch horror writer-turned movie mogul, is not to be confused with a writer who actually offers some value. If weather phenomenon frighten you and you’re at all interested in seeing yet another movie about losing visibility and being beset by scary occurrences, go see The Mist. If you started to get bored with King, stay away.
So, here’s the setup. Bunch of people living in Maine, everyone’s just doing their thing. All of a sudden, a strange mist (not a fog, mind you, a mist) rolls into town. Frightened and dismayed, citizens hole up in a grocery store to escape this ever-encroaching mist. How likely is that, honestly? You’re out and about, you’re shopping, a thick mist rolls in. Do you lock the doors, batten down the hatches and wait it out? Or do you just take your groceries home? Honestly now. Anyway, the film takes place
entirelyin the grocery store and features CGI effects which at least saves the movie from being a complete waste of time. Did I mention there are some sort of weird monsters living in the mist? Mist monsters?

Box Office Breakdown: Audiences Enchanted With Disney

Throw comedy, drama, animation, romance, sci-fi, hunky actors, pretty actresses, singing, dancing, kids and cute animals all into one film and you’ll get Enchanted. You’ll also have Disney’s latest holiday success.
The film, starring Oscar-nominated actress Amy Adams, grossed nearly $50 million over the 5-day weekend ($34 million from Friday-Sunday). Enchanted’s take places it behind 1999’s Toy Story 2 - the film with the largest Thanksgiving debut ever ($80.1 million).
Last week’s champion, Beowulf, fell into 3rd place right behind another holiday opener, This Christmas. The movies took in $23.3 and $26.3 million, respectively, during the long stretch.
Although the sappy August Rush opened in a disappointing 7th place, the DVD release of Waitress this week should make actress Keri Russell - and her fans - feel a bit better.

Will Madonna’s Daughter Join Harry Potter?

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix isn’t even out on video yet, and already talk has turned to the sixth movie installment for the franchise. Sneak peeks of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince are already surfacing, and the casting isn’t even complete.
According to the latest Hollywood-goes-to-Britain gossip, Madonna’s daughter, Lourdes, may soon don a witch’s robe; the 11-year-old is reportedly being sought to join the next Harry-themed movie.
Famed pop singer Madonna has made plenty of forays into the acting field herself, and while her roles in movies like The Next Best Thing and Desperately Seeking Susan were roundly bashed by critics, I still say A League of Their Own is a great movie (and she was pretty good in it, too). Maybe the movie success Madonna once sought will be discovered by Lourdes. Then again, maybe not.

First Sneak Peaks: ‘Harry Potter VI’

WorstPreviews.com has posted the first sneak peaks at the production of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the second to last film/book in the Potter series. Don’t let the “worst previews” name fool you - these two videos, while giving a fairly minimal look at the movie itself, show interesting bits of film production such as an evolution in the Potter costumes and the set design of Wool’s Orphanage. The music, the décor, the treats…the weather. The holidays are drawing near, and that can only mean one thing: lots of sappy heart-wrenchers are going to start appearing in our movie theaters. Even the films couched as comedies are sure to evoke a deeper meaning, all in an effort to open our holiday hearts.
Whether you want tears, laughter, or good old-fashioned family entertainment, this year Hollywood is running the gamut on movies designed to tempt you away from the malls and into the theaters. But will you actually see any of them? Get the scoop on all the upcoming movies being released this holiday season.
Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium
I saw the trailer and immediately dismissed this movie out of hand. Never mind that it has Dustin Hoffman and Natalie Portman (a big star cast if ever there was one); this is a movie about a magic toy shop. HUH? Who actually got Hoffman and Portman to agree to this? Designed especially for kids and family, Magorium is about an inventor (Hoffman) and his manager’s (Portman) attempts to keep the shop open, despite intervention from an accountant (Jason Bateman).
This one’s for the little tykes, people. Mr. Magorium’s Wonder Emporium comes to theaters November 16.
