Capcom has just released a new trailer for its highly anticipated action game sequel.  The clip runs about two minutes and contains no actual gameplay footage.  Strangely, it does show cinematic footage of our hero Dante getting thrown, punched, and kicked in the face over and over again in what appears to be a training exercise.  Devil May Cry 4 hits next year, with this and lots of other bits of weirdness, on PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.

New trailers showing some of the refinements made to , the upcoming game from Sim City creator , over the last year shows some excellent progress. As ambitious as Wright’s games tend to be, this one seems incredibly rich as you expand from a single-celled organism into a galaxy-spanning spacefarer. The developers ring up an interesting point that most games are about destroying things while this (and other Wright games) are more about building or creating. Of course you can fight with other tribes in Spore, once you get to that point, and take over other planets and the like, but perhaps it’s different to attack if it’s all in the name of progress. A second trailer is also available, showing more gameplay and the creature editing - check that one out by clicking through the jump.

Okay, the game is Hannah Montana. But subtitled “Music Jam,” this game looks like a portable including recording capabilities, four different instruments, wireless multiplayer and some really cool gameplay. There’s really no reason to be ashamed if you end up excited about this game. Except, you know, the teeny bopper license and the fact that any guy over 13 who buys this will get a lot of really suspicious looks from game store clerks.

Still, the guy demoing the game in the video is not a wuss and would totally beat you up, so if he’s comfortable playing it, you should be too.

Or, you could hold out and hope that Disney Interactive wisely re-brands this down the road with something a little less emasculating or at the very least a little less “middle school.”

Too Human“It is always darkest before the dawn.”

Those were ‘s melodramatic words in a forum post as a reply to someone expressing frustration and disappointment over the outspoken founder’s latest project, . After a disappointing show at the 2006 E3, Too Human fell from view and was conspicuously absent from this year’s E3 aside from a logo displayed during Microsoft’s press conference.

Then, shortly after E3, Silicon Knights filed suit against Epic over their Unreal 3 Engine, licensed by SK, claiming among other things that Epic had withheld valuable resources in favor of working on their own projects like Unreal Tournament 3 and . Epic countersued claiming that Silicon Knights was misrepresenting the original contract and lots of public trash-talking and childishness ensued.

2K Sports logo2K Sports has announced that it is bringing the popular Top Spin Tennis franchise to the Nintendo Wii.  Such a move seems like a no-brainer; Wii Sports is fun and all, but Wii owners have been clamoring for a tennis game with a little more depth for a long time now.

“We are excited to bring our popular Top Spin series to the Wii,” said Christoph Hartmann, President of 2K. “Given the Wii’s unique controllers and the fun family-oriented gameplay, Top Spin Tennis effectively bridges the gap between a sports and a party game.”

Unfortunately, gamers eager to whack some balls around with their Wii remotes will have to wait a bit, as the game isn’t scheduled to ship until Spring ‘08.

Fresh off the Games Conference show floor in , Jeux-France provides us with some footage of 5 Prologue in action on the .  Check out the game’s in-cockpit view, which is looking nice.  Also feast your eyes on some spins, crashes, and drifting maneuvers that look, well, like every other racing game ever invented.  Ahem…what I mean to say is, Kazunori Yamauchi’s multi-million selling racing franchise knows no equal, and this PS3 iteration looks to be following in the footsteps of its illustrious predecessors.

unreal engine banner

First, Silicon Knights sued Epic Games, alleging that Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 had done “serious damage” to SK’s long-delayed Too Human.  Later, Epic fired back with a countersuit, in which Epic claimed that wanted to use the engine without paying for it.

Now, longtime Epic partner Digital Extremes, in the middle of development of its similarly delayed Dark Sector project, has come forth with its own complaints.  Game director Steve Sinclair explained, “A lot of promises were made about the Unreal III engine, particularly on PS3. But as we see now, the time frames haven’t been met and now a lot of games using it are being held up.”

Now that two developers are on the record about problems with Unreal Engine 3, we wouldn’t be surprised to see loads of developers come out of the woodwork with similar grievances, both real and imagined.  The situation is likely to become ugly really soon.

gray matter shot

Excellent news for fans of point-and-click adventure games: , the newest game series from Jane Jensen, creator of the popular PC adventure game series, will see its first installment show up in playable form at the Leipzig Games Convention later this week.  Jensen describes Gray Matter as a “paranormal/investigative series…updated to be more unique and cutting-edge, dealing with Matrix-like questions about the nature of reality… the power and potential of the human mind.”

Of special note is Jensen’s decision to design the game in 2D.  She explains, “For an adventure game, you want atmosphere. Moving the camera is not only unnecessary, but [also] a real detriment for many people. Studies have shown that women and older people don’t like moving a camera in 3D, and these demographics are an important part of our audience.”

Perhaps the pure adventure game isn’t quite dead.  The first chapter of Gray Matter, currently subtitled Such Stuff As Dreams Are Made Of, is scheduled for a first quarter 2008 release, courtesy of publisher dtp.
