Rumor: Large Hard Drive, Original Xbox Homebrew Hack on Xbox 360
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: Mods/Hacks, Rumors, Xbox 360,

Xbox-Scene reports on a set of images that they received from an anonymous source, purporting to be images of a work-in-progress hack for the Xbox 360. The images show:
- The Xbox 360 System Blade showing a hard drive with 451 GB free
- The Surreal 64 Nintendo 64 emulator for the original Xbox, with the Xbox 360 Shut Down overlay
- The Avalaunch Dashboard replacement for the original Xbox, again with the Xbox 360 Shut Down overlay
Now, this kind of overlay would be a fairly easy image to fake in Photoshop. In the absence of video, it is hard to judge the veracity of these images. However, Team Xecuter has also stepped up to vouch for the accuracy of the screenshots. They cryptically suggest that “there is some way to go yet in various areas” but otherwise stand by the screens.

Popular Toon Becomes Video Game
Posted by Thea Davis Categories: Corporate News, Release Dates,
Midway Games signed a deal with the Cartoon Network that will bring “The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy” from television to the video game screen. Due to be released in time for Halloween, the game allows players to “wreck things and beat up stuff.” The creator of the cartoon series, animator Maxwell Atoms, is quite pleased with the resulting game. “Who could ask for anything more?” said Atoms, who also wrote dialogue for the game. In order to keep the game in-sync with the show, the same actors voice each of the characters in both. Developmental agreements for “Ed, Edd n Eddy” and “Dexter’s Laboratory,” two other animated series, were also reached between the Cartoon Network and Midway Games.
The 2006 Hollywood & Games Summit opened today in Beverly Hills with a keynote address by director Paul W.S. Anderson. Anderson’s speech, entitled “Pressing the Right Buttons: How to Successfully Blend Game and Film,” discussed methodology to help ensure the success of a film franchise built from adapting a game. Simply because a game is successful does not mean it will be an equally successful film. In fact, Anderson stated that some games were not meant to be movies. Anderson also thinks that the relationship between the film industry and the video game industry is still growing, and that one day the relationship should bear fruit, with games and films stoking each other’s success.

Many parents are worrying about the exposure of their children to violent video games. Meanwhile a group of proactive game designers hope to counteract some of the negative attention heaped onto video games by creating games that aim to raise awareness of the world’s poverty stricken. Educational titles like “Darfur is Dying” and “PeaceMaker” show a different side of gaming, one on display at the third annual Games for Change conference held in New York recently. More than 200 people participated in this year’s conference, as industry interest has expanded. The campaign is showing a sign of success, as one of the free educational games has had more than 2 million downloads to date.

Call of Duty 2 Maps Hit Live, June 29
Posted by Christopher Sasaki Categories: First Person Shooters, Xbox 360, Xbox Live, Xbox Live Marketplace,
Community manager at Infinity Ward FourZeroTwo announced that the upcoming Invasion Map Pack for Call of Duty 2 will be available on June 29, via the Xbox Live Marketplace. Initially expected to be out in July, gamers will get access to the content a couple of days early at a slightly cheaper price. The initial announcement of the map pack had the price listed at 900 Marketplace points; instead, the five new multi-player maps will debut at 800 points, about $10.
According to FourZeroTwo, the new map pack will include the following locations:
- Antoville, France (Crossroads);
- St. Louet, France (Newvillers);
- Amaye sur Seulles, France (Normandy);
- Alam Halfa, Egypt (Decoytown);
- Rostov, Russia (Harbor)
The new content should be a welcome addition for those gamers looking for new multiplayer challenges, and at the lowered price point, should be a little more economical than some of the download-able content for other games.

Red Steel Control Scheme Being Overhauled
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Action, First Person Shooters, Nintendo, Reviews, Wii,
Red Steel is one of those games that Nintendo fans really really want to see succeed. The idea of a first-person game alternately utilizing the Wii to do gun-shootin’ and sword-swingin’ sounded like a dream come true. Unfortunately that dream was shattered (or at least slightly cracked) when E3 rolled around. Red Steel proved to be perhaps the poorest showing in Nintendo’s wildly popular Wii booth, mainly due to a flawed control scheme that made gunplay somewhat jittery and (more importantly) didn’t actually simulate your sword-strokes during onscreen saber battles.
Well blessed be Ubisoft - the company has actually taken the criticism to heart. TheGameFeed.com has reported that Ubisoft recently told the French press they will be making “significant changes” to the game-play before the game hits shelves, presumably sometime around November. Here’s hoping that it will be much closer to the free-form sword swinging we were all hoping for!

In honor of Sonic the Hedgehog’s 15th Anniversary, Sega of Japan has created a Papercraft version of the first zone in the original game, Green Hill Zone. Papercraft, or pepakura, is a popular hobby in Japan, where three-dimensional models are cut out from printed templates, and assembled.
Available on Sega of Japan’s Website, the PDF file, when printed, will allow gamers to recreate this nostalgic world in paper. A little knowledge of the Japanese language might help, but isn’t required. Some patience might be required, however. If the going gets tough, then less skilled gamers can be content with the smaller, simpler, Sonic icons in the package.

Day of the Tentacle To Go!: ScummVM for the PSP Released
Posted by Michael Cardiff Categories: Adventure, Mods/Hacks, PSP, Retro,
It’s been a good week for retro game fanatics with PSPs! Earlier, we reported on news from SEGA that they’ll be releasing a compilation of 28 of the best Genesis games for the PSP. And now, MaxConsole is reporting that a new build of ScummVM (which allows you to play games made with Lucasarts’ SCUMM engine) is available for the PSP. This will allow you to play a ton of those classic Lucasarts games you loved back in the day - think Monkey Island, Full Throttle, Sam and Max Hit the Road, Loom, etc. Support has also been added for the The Legend of Kyrandia games, which were developed by Westwood Studios but also used the SCUMM engine.
For those of you interested in a bit of a history lesson, SCUMM stands for Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion and (surprisingly enough) was created during the development of Maniac Mansion for the Commodore-64 (released in 1987). It saw various iterations and was used by Lucasarts up until 1997 on The Curse of Monkey Island.

More Gears Of War Info
Posted by Josh Smith Categories: Action, Third Person Shooters, Xbox 360,

This coming holiday Microsoft has one big trick up their sleeve for Sony. That trick is Gears of War, the new FPS using the Unreal 3 engine. So far Epic has not released a large amount of info about this upcoming shooter but Planet Xbox 360 has been able to unearth more info about the game, some old, some new. The weapons in Gears of War sound innovative and impressive. Check out a glimpse of your in game armory,
Speaking of weapons, Epic has cooked up quite an exotic list for your destructing pleasure. During a few missions you’ll be able to use the Hammer of Dawn. This is a remote laser strike that is as easy as point and click. The next item on the list is the Torque Bow. This is a crossbow styled weapon that when shot will detonate in anything the arrow has plunged into. Are you tired of the rudimentary grenade throwing found in most games? The Bolo Grenades should answer that. These are sticky grenades on a sling that you twirl above your head until you have your perfect arc. Last but not least, the weapon that Epic says defines the Gears of War brand is the Lancer Rifle. This visceral beast is an assault rifle with a chainsaw as its bayonet. This allows you to shred through your opponents when they get too close.
The rest of the rest of the article contains information on the control scheme and more!
