GameFace 360For those gamers not satisfied with the level of customization available with Pelican’s faceplate designer, Nyko has announced the GameFace 360, a clear polycarbonate faceplate that snaps together to hold whatever skin you want. The kit comes with six pre-printed templates, and 15 blanks, so that users can print their own designs. The design software is available for both PC and Mac users. If you were disappointed that the Pelican faceplate designer didn’t allow you to put that awesome sketch of a liger on your Xbox 360, this would seem to be the solution for you.

We recently shot of video of the product in action as Nyko demonstrated the GameFace.

Phantasy Star Universe

Sega announced today that the latest game in the Phantasy Star series, Phantasy Star Universe will be available this Fall for the Xbox 360, as well as the previously announced PS2 and PC versions. The press release drops a few more details about the game, including what appears to be a solo mode with a more fully developed story than the previous versions. No word on whether PC, PS2, and Xbox 360 users will be able to play against each other, and it looks like the new release still won’t have a large persistent world, but will rather follow the meet up and mission structure of the previous games.

Full Press Release after the jump.

Mouse VRIf you have ever wanted a chance to take on your hamster in one-on-one combat, this might be your chance. According to Wired.com, the Researchers at Emerging Art and Architecture Research Group, or RASTER, and Singapore’s Mixed Reality Lab are working to build integrate virtual worlds with reality to make this happen. RASTER’s technology in development allows a human to control a digital character that maps to the location of a piece of bait for the hamster. The hamster, chasing after the bait, is mapped through a specialized environment so that its movements are translated into the digital arena. Wired states that the group hopes to have a functioning prototype by November, with other games in the works as well. Game interaction is very rudimentary right now, but future applications could give insights into animal behavior as well as more complex mixed-reality games. For the time being, virtual reality gamers will have to content themselves with fighting it out with rodentia.

Crysis

Electronic Arts just released a bunch of new Crysis screenshots which show off some insane jungle environments, and some shots that look like they may come from cut-scenes in the game. While it is hard to get a feel for how a game is going to look in motion from static screenshots, these images show off some high poly-count models, awesome texture detail, and some cool lighting effects. The bar was set pretty high with the last batch of screens released, and the new shots definitely do not disappoint.

Xbox 360 Logo A report from the Wall Street Journal quoted from Gamedaily.biz indicates that one of Microsoft’s hardware manufacturing partners, Wistron, is seeking to ramp production up to one million units per month by the end of 2006. Microsoft has been aggressively pursuing other territories now that production in the US and UK seems to have gotten under control. While gamers can now see actual Xbox 360 boxes on the shelves at Costco, and Internet profiteering is slowing down, Microsoft still needs to boost production to meet both expanding demand for the Xbox 360 and to meet its goal of worldwide domination. By boosting production, Microsoft hopes to take advantage of the additional time granted by the PS3 delay as well as be seen on store shelves as the predicted PS3 shortages happen during the holiday season.

P-TV

PSP users in Japan have been able to download videos via Sony’s Portable TV Service (P-TV) for the past year. The service provides downloadable, DRM-encoded videos for viewing on the PSP. An availability date for the service has not been made available to the US so far, but it would seem likely that a US-based version of P-TV would be coming. Japanchronicles.com has a review of the service. From the review, the biggest issues to date seem to be availability of videos, and the cost. There are some movie trailers and previews available for free, but a majority of the videos cost money. Costs range between 100 and about 300 yen for individual videos, and the video itself can only be played within a certain window before they expire. Expiration time varies from 5 to 7 days. For some of the episodic content, users can buy subscriptions that allow unlimited video downloads within a category, but these average 6300 yen per month. Overall, Japanchronicles.com gives the service thumbs up for easy of use, but there aren’t a lot of videos available for fans of shows other than dramas and anime.

Metal Slug 3D

The Magic Box has managed to grab some screen shots and character artwork from the latest entry in the Metal Slug series for the PS2. Playmore is moving the game to a 3D world, in an over-the-shoulder third person perspective. The screens show off some new environments, but for the most part the game doesn’t look a whole lot different than the previews shown in 2004. Metal Slug is scheduled for a June release in Japan, with no US date known at this time. Franchises that have moved from 2D to 3D have been somewhat of a mixed bag, so gamers should hope that the game translates more like Metroid Prime than the horribly bad C: The Contra Adventure.

KameoA combination review/retrospective of Kameo has been published on Siliconera; the review generally falls in line with the web consensus, getting an overall recommendation. Perhaps more interesting is the evolution of the game itself. Kameo was originally slated for the Nintendo Gamecube, and first made its appearance at E3 2001. A little over four years later, the game finally shipped for the Xbox 360. In between, the game underwent some fairly significant changes. Character designs were altered somewhat, and gameplay and combat styles received somewhat more dramatic modifications.

The review doesn’t discuss the repetitive nature of the game, but it feels like some of the character and combat changes were made to alleviate this. The different characters and control styles don’t always work out (see the water boss battle) but they did serve to break up the game into manageable chunks. It now feels like the segments spent as Kameo are the most repetitive and least interesting segments of the game,  and its possible that Rare’s attempts to shake up the combat and character design were attempts to mitigate this.

OblivionMajor Nelson recently posted that the Orrery quest for Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is now available on Xbox Live for a low 150 points. The backlash has already started over in the official Oblivion forums for the game; people that have downloaded the additional quest complain that this add-on is less valuable than the previous horse armor premium content. Gamers impatient for the gameplay patch from Bethesda are also questioning the priorities of the developers.
