Reservists in Nova Scotia may soon be training in Canada’s largest virtual battle lab known as Gagetown Labs.  The training features games such as Steel Beasts, First to Fight and SWAT 4.  In the article Major Tim Workman points out the flaws in training troops with video games which were made for retail shelves.  The problems include unlimited ammo, no fatigue, and the ability to be shot and continue fighting.  These all add together to reinforce the Rambo mentality which is deadly in the real battlefield.

The LAN Party headquarters of Canada is currently trying to tweak Virtual Battlespace to allow for more realistic situations.  In other attempts to impart realism into video games Gagetown has started requiring half of the 8 man squad complete a mission alive in order to pass and by removing a soldier from play after one hit.  While the training is not yet in widespread use Gagetown envisions SWAT 4 which requires players to warn hostiles and use non lethal force first to be helpful in urban combat situations present in Iraq.

Looks like someone was kind enough to record a video of the Half-Life 2: Episode 2 trailer from the Episode 1 release and post it to YouTube. It looks like Episode 1 will end with another cliff-hanger, with Alyx in peril early on. This only continues as the viewer sees her unconscious (or possibly dead?) body being carried by a vortigaunt. The trailer also shows some lush forest environments, and gamers get some voice over from what sounds like Doctor Eli Vance talking about taking the fight to the aliens, to finally take back the planet. Of course, since we know there’s going to be an Episode 3 at some point, things aren’t going to go particularly smoothly for Gordon Freeman in this episode.

Mehrunes Razor

Bethesda recently announced a new mod for Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, “Mehrunes’ Razor.” In addition to adding the magical item for which the downloadable content is named, there will be a new dungeon and several new items for gamers to discover. Mehrunes’ Razor could be found in the previous game, Morrowind, through an included quest, but the description Bethesda gives here hints that the incarnation in Oblivion may be a bit more powerful. This sounds to be one of the more involved downloadable content expansions, and the price reflects it; for PC users the mod will cost $2.99, and no pricing is currently available for Xbox 360 owners, but expect it to cost between 200 and 250 Marketplace points. According to the Oblivion download site, the new content features:

  • A fully-featured quest takes you deep into the fringes of the Niben.
  • Earn the fearsome Mehrunes Razor, with the ability to kill foes instantly.
  • 17 new magic items to discover!
  • Conquer the largest dungeon in all Cyrodiil.
  • Thwart a plot to overthrow Imperial rule in Tamriel.
  • 12 new books, notes, and journals to help you unravel the mystery.
  • Hidden treasures await!

ChocoboDevelopers at Square recently dropped some details on the new Chocobo breeding feature in an update on the official site for Final Fantasy XI. Chocobo breeding was announced as a part of the recent expansion pack, The Treasures of Aht Urghan, but the functionality was not in place at launch. Instead, the feature will become available in a soon to be released version update for expansion owners. The feature is billed as an upgraded form of the gardening functionality, and should allow both dedicated and casual players to try and raise a Chocabo; according to the website, the player “can raise a chocobo by taking care of it for a minimal amount of time each day over a span of roughly 1-3 months…” Player’s must first find a Chocobo egg to access the feature, and each egg will apparently have its own unique DNA that will control how the Chocobo develops. Eventually, gamers successful at raising their Chocobo will be able to match up with other players and breed new animals, allowing for more varieties and development.

Heavenly SwordAndy Serkis, the man behind both Gollum and King Kong, will be lending his talents to the Playstation 3 game Heavenly Sword according to the BBC news service. Serkis became involved by chance, after a trailer was passed on to Serkis by his mortgage advisor, of all people. Much like his work with Gollum, Serkis’ movements and dramatic performance is being motion-captured and used for in-game characters. The article goes on to describe some of the other Hollywood-like production qualities of this game, which is is expected to launch shortly after the release of the PS3.

If Serkis’ previous work is any gauge (13 Going On 30 being the odd exception) then we can expect great things from this game. Check the link below for a somewhat creepy look at the similarities between Serkis and his CG counterpart.

Game Critics Awards 2006
The Game Critics awards for E3 2006 have been announced, and the winner of Best of Show this year is Nintendo’s Wii console, beating out Assassin’s Creed,Bioshock, Gears of War, and Spore to take the overall title. The Wii also took best hardware, while Will Wright’s Spore was voted Best Original Game, Best Simulation Game, and Best PC Game. Epic’s new Xbox 360 shooter, Gears of War won Best Console Game. The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass came away with the award for Best Handheld Game, the rest of Nintendo’s showing was represented by Excite Truck as Best Racing Game, and Wii Sports as Best Sports Game.

In terms of console platform wins, Nintendo’s Wii led the pack with 4 wins, followed by the Xbox 360 with 3, and the PS3 with 2. Nintendo’s showing was quite impressive, given that the Xbox 360 was heading into its second generation of game titles, and had a number of great games shown; the amount of wins is a testament to Nintendo’s preparation and readiness for this Holiday season. Microsoft may have suffered a little bit due to the sheer number of nominations seen for the Xbox 360 platform; Xbox 360 games received a total of 21 nominations, resulting in multiple Xbox 360 games up for the same awards. Overall, Sony’s strongest showing were the games Heavenly Sword and Assassin’s Creed, which took Best Fighting Game and Best Action/Adventure Game respectively.

The full list of nominees (winners bolded) after the jump.

PS3 Stop me if you’ve heard this one before, but according to Phil Harrison the Playstation 3 is going to become your primary home computer along with your gaming console, Blu-Ray player and your most effective paperweight. Key points from the interview include the statement below:

Spiegel: Speaking of online, Microsoft has just announced “Live Anywhere”, an integrated Windows-Xbox-Mobile environment. Is that something you’re worried about because you don’t have the same access to the PC market as Microsoft does?

Harrison: No, it doesn’t concern me and I don’t think it concerns the consumer either. Once you adopt a game system as your primary entertainment device, that’s what you want. We think that Playstation 3 is the place where our users will be doing their gaming, their movie watching, their Web browsing and a lot of other computer entertainment functions. That will satisfy them. Playstation 3 is a computer. We don’t need the PC.

So it’s sounding more and more like, if you want to play against your PC-based friends online, the 360 is your best bet. If the PS3 does serve well as an online PC in addition to a Blu-Ray player and a gaming console, then the $599 price point starts to look a little less painful. Still, I hear echoes of Microsoft’s plans for the original Xbox, which was also supposed to become the all-in-one convergence center of our entertainment lives.

AMD LogoForbes is reporting on escalating rumors that AMD is in talks to purchase graphics card manufacturer ATI. The rumors originate from analyst Apjit Walia, published by RBC Capital Markets. These rumors do seem to be carrying some weight in the stock market, with ATI jumping as news leaked out. According to the report, the “...synergies of [the buyout] seem consistent with the recent announcements by AMD to significantly increase capacity over the next few-years.” This would certainly shake up the PC and gaming playfield, with ATI having moved into the motherboard chipset race lately, and their development of the competing SLI technology, Crossfire. Intel has been largely trounced in the gaming arena, but is looking to catch up with the release of their Core processors for the desktop, and AMD should see higher competition there. With a AMD buyout of ATI, suddenly the processor manufacturer would have solutions available to address low-end integrated graphics chipsets to high-end GPU offerings, and could further tune their motherboards towards gaming performance. nVidia grabbed a lot of hard core gaming enthusiast mindshare when they released SLI; an AMD-ATI merger could to a lot to capture credibility in that community.
