Earthbound NESGameSetWatch reports on an insane find that a collector found at a recent garage sale in New York. Apparently, a former employee of Nintendo was selling off a large lot of Nintendo and Super Nintendo games and prototypes that he had accumulated during his years at Nintendo of America. Some of the lot include some of the Starfox competition cartridges used for the Nintendo national tours back in their heyday, and prototypes of the NES version of Earthbound, and apparently, the only copy of the original Nintendo Campus Challenge NES cartridge known to exist. Some of the lot have made their way to Ebay, including a prototype of Zelda 3 for the Super Nintendo, with a “Buy It Now” price of $2000, so those gamers looking to round out their collection of every SNES cartridge ever made now have their chance.

It’s always sad to see that one of the top game makers out there can’t turn a profit…even with hits like The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion and Grand Theft Auto, Take2 has taken a profit hit this quarter, which probably has to do with some of the recent FTC hullaballoo. However, there was some good news in Take2’s earning reports, including the announcement of a second PSP title in development, in addition to the already-mentioned Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. Straight from the press release:

Additional products planned for 2006 from Rockstar Games include Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories for the PSP, scheduled for October release, an additional PSP title based on another premier brand, and Bully.

MMOG Screenshot The online worlds of multiplayer games are spawning a new sideline.  It seems that players who start flirting with each other while participating for hours on end in these virtual reality environments are meeting offline and continuing the relationships, leading to a “marriage” of like minds—that of gamers in love.

Take the case of Mark Brown, who says he searched for Ms. Right in all the usual places, but instead met her online while playing “City of Heroes,” a massively multiplayer online game. MMOG players tend to imbue their online characters with remnants of their offline personalities, so it’s possible to “meet” a character while playing online and hit it off with both the virtual entity and the real person controlling it. Avid gamers who have met their virtual mates sometimes stage in-game weddings, and these virtual nuptials often precede the offline equivalent.

It brings new meaning to the phrase “the family that plays together stays together.”

The compelling plot behind the blockbuster motion picture The Da Vinci Code has bloomed into a video game spinoff that seems worthy of all the attention its release has garnered. Whereby most games that take their cues from books or movies may seem lackluster or untrue to the original, The Da Vinci Code is jam packed with enough thrills, mysterious puzzles, and a variety of things to see and do that will make this game worth your while.

Over at 4 Color Rebellion, one of the commenters noticed that Mario Kart DS has a different boot up sound on his DS Lite than on the DS; on the original DS, the normal “Yahoo!” sound is played, but on the DS Lite, Mario says “Here We Go!” Possibly, the cartridge could be detecting something different on the DS than on the DS Lite, but someone else reported that they get the “Yahoo!” sound on their DS Lite. More likely, the sound played is based either on the user settings on the DS Lite, or something else keyed on in the hardware, possibly in the firmware or nvRAM. Still, this is a weird little oddity picked up on after gamers got their DS Lites today.

PS3 and Xbox 360Yahoo Games has published a “state of the battle” between the Xbox 360 and the Playstation 3. Overall, the article is a decent summary of the strengths and weaknesses of the two platforms, covering: system hardware, exclusive games, high definition gaming, and movie formats.

The hardware rundown is mostly accurate, but there are a couple of statements that stand out. Stating this: “Unlike the two Xbox 360 versions, it’s impossible to later upgrade the basic version of the PlayStation 3. If you want to snag the advanced features, you must pick up the more expensive system at the outset” is not exactly accurate. Of all the differences between the two SKUs, the only functionality that can’t be achieved by the lower cost unit is the HDMI port. This may come into play later, but all the other functionality can be had, according to Sony. The hard drive is a user upgradeable SKU, with off the shelf hardware. Those users wanting wireless networking will be able to get a USB wireless dongle, and similarly, memory stick functionality can be achieved through the USB ports as well.

Halo 2 Monthly matchmaking

If you are a regular reader of Major Nelson’s blog you cannot help but notice that Halo 2 is still topping the “Original Xbox Top Live Games” list.  Halo 2 has been seated in the top ten for as long as I can remember and recently has kept the number one position many weeks running.  Several factors can contribute to the long lasting success of Halo 2.  The lack of any other killer app for the original Xbox has lead many to use the Xbox as simply Halo 2 console.  The ease of matchmaking and fun gameplay has also contributed to the long championship rein of Halo 2.  Whatever the reason Halo 2 is a lasting force in the Xbox and Xbox 360 world.

Last week Bungie announced that over half a billion games of Halo 2 have been played on Xbox Live.  They followed up last weeks announcement with the news that Halo 2 matchmaking is still plowing through roughly 20 million games a month.  To put that into context 20 million, is the same number of games being played when Halo 2 was released.  Whether you believe Halo 2 is still in the top spot because it is an amazing game or because the Xbox competition was lacking retaining this many players a year and a half later is an amazing accomplishment.
