Latest Gear Live Videos

Halo 2The day has finally arrived when we get new multiplayer maps for our favorite online shooter – Halo 2. There are two versions available – online and retail pack. The online version includes the five new maps for $11.99 via Xbox Live – Containment, Turf, Sanctuary and Warlock are currently available for free download. The retail pack on the other hand includes all 9 maps, all the auto-updates, a bonus cinematic and a behind-the-scenes documentary. The retail version will set you back $19.99 and should be available from your favorite retailer now. As cool as these new maps are, there is one major draw back – you can only play the new maps during custom games against people that also purchased the maps. Bungie states that these new maps should start rolling out into Rumble Preview and Team Preview on July 11th. At least this gives all a chance to download the maps and get used to them before getting our ass kicked

kicking butt online. Anyone else have the maps yet?

Halo 2Anyone who has played Halo 2 on Xbox Live has surely come across at least one cheater and knows how annoying they can be. Cheaters ruin the game play for everyone in general, not just in the game but overall all. How so? By way of auto updates. Every time some punk finds a “hack” for the game and starts ruining the experience for the rest of us, Bungie releases one of these famed auto updates. As you can imagine or experienced, this is highly annoying – so what’s Bungie’s stance on cheaters? Aside from banning every single cheater they see and rolling out updates, Bungie is also working with the Xbox Live Team to enforce the Code of Conduct and also track in-game feedback. This means that a simple banning from Halo 2 for that account is not the only thing in their arsenal of tools against cheaters. Currently more than 2,600 “gamers” have been banned by Bungie – which seems like a small number compared to the over half-million Halo 2 gamers today. The cheating seems to be bigger than ever and with the current new map released, we are sure to see this even more – good news is that Bungie will be releasing a new update in the second week of July, one week after the new maps being released. The good thing about this timing is that the new maps can only be played on Custom game types via Xbox Live – meaning the only cheaters you’ll see are the ones you know and are on your “friends” list.

War of the Worlds Cell PhoneWar of the Worlds has been performing nicely in theaters, and we just took Gameloft’s mobile phone adaptation of the movie for review. The game has the unusual twist of putting you in control of the bad guys! You get to play an invading alien metal tripod set on destroying the human race. It’s interesting to see the slew of games recently that pit the player against the human race. For more info on the game check out the full review after the jump.

Doom 3 Review Playfeed The computer game Doom is one of the most important events in 3d computer graphics and it was instrumental in creating a demand for 3d games that eventually lead to the development of the Playstation, 3d accelerator cards and Direct X. So the development of Doom 3 is not and easy task to take on. This is made of course by iD Software the game company that is directly responsible for the creation and popularization of the first person shooter concept.

Crazy Frog GameAs if it wasn’t bad enough we have to listen to that Jamster Frog in TV commercials and on cell phones, Digital Jesters, the company responsible for the annoying frog, has announced that they have inked a deal that will land the Crazy Frog in a couple of video games.  The UK firm holds exclusive “worldwide interactive entertainment” rights with the frog, and will release the first game for PC and PS2 later this year.  The game, “Crazy Frog Racer” will have frog and friends thrown into an arcade-style racing game and hits shelves in Europe in November, with the rest of us seeing it some time early 2006.

Halo 2

The day is almost upon us when we shall all be able to own the newest Halo 2 Multiplayer maps. Until that day, we can enjoy more great videos courtesy of TeamXbox. They now have three new movies: Backwash, Gemini, and Terminal. I know I can’t wait to load up those new packs into my Xbox and try them out on Live.  Here are some quick descriptions of the new maps for your reading pleasure:

Backwash

Backwash is covered with a thick mist that has nestled within the valley of a large swamp. The audio of the map is very well done and the rainfall and ambient sound effects give players a great impression of a living, breathing eco-system while creating an intriguing mood for the game’s action to take place. If you remember the swamp-like level of Halo, you’ll have a good idea what to expect from Backwash. A medium sized map, Backwash is a great map for playing Slayer matches.

Gemini

Gemini is a relatively small map that hovers in space high above the lights of High Charity. Gemini is meant as a place of refuge and meditation for the senior prelates in the Prophet hierarchy. Because of Gemini’s small size, it is best suited for Slayer matches composed of a low number of players.

Terminal

Terminal may now be a battlefield, but it was once a place where people spent their leisure time shopping, enjoying lunch with friends or just hanging out. While this might sound like a mall, today it is anything but a place to go with friends; that is unless your friends are looking for a fight. Located on New Mombasa, Terminal is a large map filled with plenty of dangers including an active monorail that players can walk across, and maybe get splattered by a passing train if they aren’t paying attention. Its large size lends itself best to games of single flag CTF as well as Assault matches, but don’t rule out Team Slayer.

DescriptionStarting Sunday morning, Circuit City will be having a blowout sale on select Video Games for $9.99 each.  The sale is much like the one they had last year where games were only $4.99, but it seems that they are a little more organized this year because many stores have already pulled the games off the floor to prevent people from buying them early. To see the game list check out the post in our forums. The madness starts on July 3.

Description

As I sit here typing a draft of this editorial on a crowded NYC subway, I can recall a simpler time when fighting for controllers was never an issue.  This was a time when you’d be satisfied with “Wait until I get game over.” There was no such thing as LAN parties, no 4-port systems and no online capabilities.  This was a time when we would count how many bits our system(s) was and how many our next one would be.

In spite, there are still some similarities now that still exist.  We still love to play together with as many friends as possible and we still make a night out of it.  We still think about the future systems and how they will impact our life (and salivate at pictures in magazines and websites).  One thing is for certain, we love any type of co-op just as much as we like competition. Enter Gunstar Heroes – one of the most addictive co-op games to date.  Venture with us to 1993, when Gunstar Heroes drove a couple of high school kids went crazy over fictitious guns and humorous surroundings.
