On Gear Live: 2024 Nissan Z Nismo Review

VeriSign is throwing down the content delivery gauntlet with their Intelligent CDN technology. We are talking about full high definition video content streamed directly to your television at very high speeds. They show off a 200 MB file that is encoded at 5 mbps 1080p, which downloads completely in under 30 seconds. This is the kind of technology we hope to see on our set top boxes in the near future, and VeriSign is promising that it isn’t far away at all. Give it a view, and let us know what you think. Could both and be dead in the water with tech like this soon to be available everywhere?

Hitachi is working on packing an insanely large amount of storage into an incredibly tiny space by way of their iVDR technology. We speak with Hitatchi about iVDR in this clip, where they mention squeezing 760 GB into a 2.5-inch sized drive. iVDR is expected to launch in April over in Japan, and a 160 GB module will likely cost around $300 USD. We get a look at a couple of prototype ideas as well, all in this clip.

We chat with Mark Domaille of Atlantic, a company that manufactures completely waterproof and shockproof iPod cases. While they aren’t the prettiest things, we aren’t sure that anything short of a bulldozer will be able to destroy your iPod while it’s encased in one of these. The case also has built-in neoprene waterproof speakers. Available for $199 USD.

We noticed a few people charging their cell phones on the HyperCharge Mobile Charger at CES, and we figured we would talk to a couple of people who were using it to get their impressions. For $5, you get a 15 minute charge which results in a virtually full battery. We also spoke with someone who just left their BlackBerry in the unit, as security is an issue when dealing with expensive phones and handhelds.

We caught up with Technocom to talk about their Vehicle and Infrastructure Integration, which allows vehicles to integrate with both the road infrastructure as well as other cars. The hope is that the technology will both reduce traffic congestion and reduce auto accidents. Vehicles would be fitted with a custom Technocom console, or it would be built-in to a standard GPS device, and all of a sudden your driving world would be willed with different safety alerts so that you are kept on your toes about driving conditions and hazards.

The device takes your TV, DVD, TiVo, PC, and just about any other content you can imagine, and moves it to your iPod, cell phone, PSP, USB Mass Storage Device. It basically sits between your device and the source, and records the content at a rate of about 3 hours per gigabyte. The video quality was excellent from what we saw. We stopped to chat with Rome Eselin of to talk about the new Unit2 that they are working on. While not available yet, the device looks to be a winner. It’s a PMP sporting a 30GB hard drive, 7-inch LCD display, with integrated WiFi. It has a docking station that has multiple inputs and outputs as well as an integrated DVD player, so you can both display the Unit2 content on a TV, but also send signals from your cable box or DVD player to the Unit2 wirelessly over 802.11n. They are even trying to incorporate point of interest into the device, so by way of the internet connection, you can find local restaurants. Even Internet radio is being considered. This device could be hot when released in the fourth quarter of 2007 - no pricing details have been released.

Portable Sound Laboratories makes the iMainGo, a portable iPod speaker and case. It runs on four AAA batteries, delivering up to 30 hours of power, and even has an alarm mode built right in to the unit. Aside from providing fairly decent sound on the go, it also protects the iPod from sratches and drop damage since it’s fairly thick. It fits every iPod ever made, and works across the board. Notice, they mention it will fit the new iPod that comes out in February. That’s this month. Nevertheless, the iMainGo is available for $69.95.

We look at SanDisk’s first PMP, the Sansa View in this episode. The device has a 4-inch widescreen 640x480 display, and 8 GB embedded flash memory which provides for about 16 full-length movies. Even better, it has a full-size SD slot so you can add another 8 GB of memory to the unit. It’s also extremely thin, and feels great in the hand. It gets about 4 hours of video playback, and has a removeable battery, allowing you to add a higher power battery if you like. Available in March for $299 USD.
