If you’re a fan of ebooks, then you’re gonna love Amazon’s new Kindle Oasis. Amazon has created a new high-end ebook reader that packs in the very best features that the company has to offer, all into a device that’s so light that it feels like you’re barely holding anything at all. This is Andru Edwards from GearLive.com, and this month here on Mode, I’m bringing you the top three features of the Amazon Kindle Oasis.
First up, the size. The Kindle Oasis is amazingly thin and light. It’s obviously the smallest Kindle device that Amazon has ever released at 4.6 ounces, compared to the 6.3 ounce Kindle Voyage and 7.2 ounce Kindle Paperwhite - but once it’s in your hand, it’s unmistakingly a Kindle. One thing about the hardware that seems odd at first is that it isn’t a uniform thickness. The majority of the device is 3.4mm thin, but there is a thicker portion on one side where the battery lies, which also houses the much-appreciated hardware page turn buttons, battery, power button, and microUSB charge port. After using the Kindle Oasis, it becomes obvious that the thicker portion is necessary in order to use the device comfortably. It puts the bulk of the weight in your hand, making the rest of the device seem weightless.
Number two, the return of real, true to life hardware buttons. Comfortably turn the page with either the touch display or dedicated page turn buttons located on the front of the handgrip. Whether you choose to read with your left or right hand, Kindle Oasis automatically rotates the page orientation to match, so you always get the buttons in an easy to press spot right by your thumb. Of course, you can still use the touchscreen display to turn pages too, but it’s not mandatory.
Number three, the battery life. Despite the Oasis being so thin, Amazon has come up with a way to give it an incredible two month battery life. Here’s how it works. A fully-charged Kindle Oasis will last you a good two weeks on its own. However, rather than selling separate protective cases for the device, Amazon instead bundles in a nice leather cover which includes an extended battery pack, available in black, merlot, or walnut. It attaches to the Kindle Oasis magnetically, and when fully charged provides an additional 6 weeks of battery life, bringing the total to 8 weeks. I mentioned how great the Oasis feels on its own, and the cover does add a bit of heft, but the cover folds back and attaches to the back of the Kindle magnetically and feels similar to a small paperback - but if you don’t like that, you can easily remove it and replace it when you’re done with your reading session. It’s very liberating to know that you only need to charge your device 6 or 7 times per year.
So there you have it, my top three features on the Amazon Kindle Oasis. Of course, you still get the high-resolution 300ppi display, the screen is brighter and more evenly lit by the built-in adjustable light, and it can store thousands of books. All that said, you’ll probably get that feeling of sticker shock when you see the $289.99 starting price. Amazon definitely wants to play in the premium gadgets category with the Oasis, but when you look at the price, it becomes hard to see how the features I’ve mentioned make this work $90 more than the Kindle Voyage, or $170 more than the Kindle Paperwhite. But if you want the Rolls Royce of ebook readers, you won’t find anything better than the Kindle Oasis.
Thanks a lot for watching guys! I’m Andru Edwards, and I’ll catch you in the next video.
