On Gear Live: Apple’s $400,000,000 Secret to Saving the Planet

Scrubs As a fan of all things Scrubs, I can barely contain my excitement over the upcoming YouTube preview from the series’ musical episode. On December 29th, a sneak peek of the song “Everything Comes Down to Poo” will be available to view on YouTube. The song is performed by Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Stephanie D’Abruzzo (who guest stars in the musical episode). If you haven’t already, check out the video “Guy Love” on YouTube. This tender sweet song expresses the totally straight, yet sometimes misunderstood, relationship between Braff’s JD and Faison’s Turk.

The upcoming musical episode of Scrubs will air on January 18th.

Bravo logo Remember Taxicab Confessions? If you’re not familiar with it, it’s like the equivalent of getting toasted at the local bar and spilling your indiscretions to the bartender. Only it’s in a cab and a hidden camera catches the whole thing. Taxicab Confessions originated on HBO in 1995 and was a long-running, Emmy winning series for the cable network. Bravo will begin airing three new episodes on Friday, December 29th. Then on New Year’s Eve, they will be showing a marathon. “Taxicab Confessions was ground-breaking as one of the original reality series,” according to Bravo’s Executive Vice President of Programming and Production, Frances Berwick. “This award-winning show was raw, moving and shocking while at the same time poignant in its portrayal of urban lifestyles.” No telling what the censors will do with the series, however. HBO allowed explicit comments to air, but not sure that Bravo (home of Project Runway and Queer Eye for the Straight Guy) will let that fly.

America Ferrera ABC Family will be running a marathon of Ugly Betty on New Year’s Eve, kicking off the “Be Ugly in ‘07” campaign. ABC’s campaign asks Americans to rise to the challenge to “be real, be smart, be passionate and be true to yourself” like Betty’s character. Good luck with that.

Aside from the campaign, the marathon is excellent news for those who may have missed this little gem of a series. This is a great way to get caught up on all things Betty, the eager little assistant at glam fashion magazine Mode. The marathon begins at 9:00 A.M. and continues for eleven hours. The whole shebang ends at 8:00, so you can get up and stretch your legs a bit before the big New Year’s countdown begins. Happy viewing!

Ryan Seacrest A bit of a slow entertainment news day when a possible rivalry between Carson Daly and Ryan Seacrest is a headline. The rumor that the two are competing for the coveted New Year’s Eve gig that Dick Clark has hosted for oh-so-many years was quickly dismissed by both Daly and Seacrest.

Dick Clark, who made the ‘‘New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’’ show an institution, suffered a stroke two years ago. In his place, uber-host Ryan Seacrest will be taking on hosting duties for the second year. Daly has his own hosting responsibilities for the night’s festivities on ‘‘New Year’s Eve With Carson Daly’‘, on NBC. The notion that the two would be fighting for Clark’s job seemed to be shot down before the rumor mill could even get warmed up. Daly told the ‘‘Los Angeles Times’‘, “Dick Clark is a huge inspiration for the huge success he’s achieved. But that’s where I stop. The world is changing. I’m young; I have my own thoughts as a producer. I’m not trying to keep his tradition. I’m trying to do my own.”

Rosie O'Donnell Is Rosie O’Donnell more than Barbara Walters can handle? First there was the big stink O’Donnell made over Kelly Ripa’s conflict with Clay Aiken when he co-hosted Live With Regis and Kelly. Now come O’Donnell’s remarks that have offended the Asian-American community. In response to the Danny DeVito drunken appearance, O’Donnell said, “The fact is that it’s news all over the world. That you know, you can imagine in China it’s like: ‘Ching chong. Danny DeVito, ching chong, chong, chong, chong. Drunk. The View. Ching chong.’ ” Ugh. Can you imagine why people are offended? Of course, she is quick to smooth the waters, posting on her web site, “It was not my intent to mock.” She also said that it was “comedy” and that she does “many accents and probably will continue to.”

New York City councilman John C. Liu sent a letter to View executive producer Barbara Walters and told FOXNews.com, “The ‘ching-chong’ bit is not a trivial matter. It really hits a raw nerve for many people in the community – many like myself, who grew up with these kinds of taunts. We all know that it never ends at the taunts.”

The group UNITY: Journalists of Color, issued the following statement: “By allowing O’Donnell’s cheap jab at Chinese Americans to go unchecked, the network is essentially condoning racial and ethnic slurs. It’s a practice that should not be tolerated in today’s diverse society. That’s our view.”

Morgan Spurlock FX has really introduced some great shows, and 30 Days is no exception. 30 Days is brought to you by Morgan Spurlock, whose documentary Super Size Me opened a lot of eyes about the perils of fast food through his own 30 day experiment. In the same vein as that movie, participants of 30 Days are put in a situation outside of their comfort zone for a month. Spurlock himself has participated in one experiment in each season of the show, and expects to do it for the show’s third go around. In season one, he lived on a minimum wage for 30 days and experienced the hardships that many people don’t realize accompanies minimum wage earnings. The second season place Spurlock in jail for 30 days. His series is definitely eye opening for both the participants and the viewers. The third season of 30 Days will air in the spring, although the specifics about the premiere are not yet known.

PrinceThe Super Bowl has gotten in this tradition the past few years of besting the previous year’s halftime show. So, what to do after the Rolling Stones and Paul McCartney have taken the stage? Time to turn to his royal purpleness, Prince. That may not get too many football fans jazzed, but I for one think it will make for a lively halftime showing. Hey, I grew up on Prince in the 80s, and while I haven’t been a loyal follower, I do think he has kept his sound interesting enough over the years to maintain a tremendous fan base. His recent five Grammy nominations only make the star that much sweeter. I saw him on Saturday Night Live last season and he was amazing, so I think his gig at the Pepsi Super Bowl XLI will keep me from changing the channel at halftime. Check it out on CBS on February 4th—nearly one billion people in over 230 countries worldwide watched last year’s Super Bowl.

Elliott YaminElliott Yamin had a crazy fan base when he competed on American Idol. Will even more fans jump on board now that he’s undergone $50,000 worth of dental work? Elliott, don’t you know beauty is only skin deep? With porcelain veneers and 20 hours of dental time to fix his crossbite, we’ll see if the makeover was worth the pain of a new smile. Girlfriend Jaime Paetz said, “He loves to laugh, he loves to smile. I liked his old teeth, but if (the veneers) make him happy, then I’m happy.”

Beverly Hills dentist David Frey provided the dental work free of charge, so I guess it was a no-brainer to have the work done. “I’ve always wanted to have a nicer smile,” says Yamin. “I used to look at old pictures of myself, and I figured out how to kind of smile without displaying all my teeth.” Yamin just signed on with Sony’s publishing division for a songwriting deal and his debut album will drop in early 2007. Ah, plenty of reasons to smile.
