On Gear Live: Apple’s $400,000,000 Secret to Saving the Planet

BravoBravo has introduced their latest reality show concept—called Top Design, the show will pit 12 interior designers, architects and artists against one another for the top prize. Hey, it worked for Project Runway and Top Chef, so why not? Hosted by Todd Oldham, uber-designer, this is yet another interesting entry into the reality genre. I poo-poo’d Project Runway until I actually got caught in a marathon airing and could not look away! “Bravo has successfully brought spirited competition to both the fashion and food industries,” Bravo President Lauren Zalaznick said. “Now our passionate viewers will be rewarded each week when they ‘watch what happens’ as the creativity and drama unfold through each pressure-filled design challenge.”

Okay folks, you know the drill. Each week the contestants will face off in a challenge, where they will be judged by design experts, and picked off one by one. The winner receives a $100,000 prize, a new car, an editorial feature in Elle Decor, and a showcase at a big hoopty-do event. The premiere episode will air on January 31st, after the season finale of Top Chef.

Rebecca RomijnSeems Ugly Betty is recruiting more beautiful people. The latest, no doubt to fill the void that Salma Hayek will leave when her story’s up, is Rebecca Romijn. She will take on the role of the mystery woman who is working with Wilhelmina (Vanessa Williams) to take over Mode magazine. So far, we’ve only seen this mysterious chick wrapped in bandages—who knew that underneath it all was Rebecca Romijn? That unfortunately means curtains for the woman who has been playing the character thus far, Elizabeth Penn Payne.

Romijn is well known as a model, but has also made her mark in TV and film roles, including the X-Men series, Just Shoot Me, and Pepper Dennis

Rosie O'DonnellRosie O’Donnell has only been on The View three months, and rumors are already swirling that she may be leaving the gabfest. This speculation came after she mentioned that she would like to work on Nip/Tuck in response to an audience member’s question at the commercial break. On Thursday’s show, she set the record straight, saying “Don’t anybody worry where Rosie’s going. She’s right here.” And the ladies of The View should be lucky that she’s sticking around—the show has seen an increase in viewership since Star Jones left and O’Donnell came on board. The show enjoyed its best numbers in its history for November, with viewership up 15 percent over last year.

The Apprentice The sixth installment of The Apprentice returns in January, with a heavy dose of contestants who are lawyers, plus a Mark Burnett twist. In this season, Burnett will take a page from the book of Survivor and subject each task’s losing team to a less-than-desirable consequence. In seasons’ past, the team who won each task would be treated to a special dinner or shopping spree, while the losers retreated back to the apartment to sulk. This time, the losers do their sulking as they camp in the backyard in tents, with outdoor showers and porta potties. The humanity! Viewers will also see a change in locale—former seasons have used NYC as home base, while the sixth edition calls Los Angeles home. Another fresh spin is that the winning team’s project manager gets to continue as PM until the team loses, and gets to sit in on the boardroom firing for the losing team. It’s nice to see them shake up the format a little, since this franchise has grown more and more stale as the seasons progress. Look for it on NBC on Sunday, January 7th at 9:30 p.m.

Lost Bad news for those of us who have an early bedtime. Starting in February, when Lost returns, it will be moving from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. The move could potentially assist ABC with the difficulty it has had finding a show that retains a significant audience with Lost as the lead-in. By moving Lost to 10 p.m., the network can lead with a block of comedy and increase viewership with the 10:00 slot. Beginning on January 3rd, According to Jim will air at 8:00 and 8:30 p.m., followed by two new series, The Knights of Prosperity and In Case of Emergency. On January 24th, the night will lead with George Lopez, then According to Jim, Knights, and Emergency. The move also takes Lost out of competition with American Idol (which begins January 17th) and Criminal Minds (that just won the post-Super Bowl airing). It will be interesting to see how the comedy block ABC has lined up will fare against the tough competition. Lost returns on February 7th.

Flavor Flav I tried to watch the VH1 Big in ‘06 Awards, I really did. But I just couldn’t help thinking this was a colossal waste of time. I love awards shows as much as the next gal, but this one is completely unnecessary. But maybe that’s the point. The event kicked off with host D.L. Hughley telling a bunch of unfunny jokes at rapid fire pace, followed by the first presenters of the night—the cheerleader from Heroes and Tommy Lee. Ugh. They presented the award for Big Music Artist to Justin Timberlake, and even he seemed unexcited to be there. Next up? Backstage interviews to come courtesy of VH1’s darling, Flavor Flav. Double Ugh. That’s where they lost me. Appearances included Eva Longoria, Lance Bass, Kiefer Sutherland, Stephen Colbert, Joey Lawrence, Katharine McPhee, Masi Oka, lonelygirl15 (Jessica Rose,) and more, with a special performance by Dennis DeYoung. That’s a big “huh?” from me, but maybe Dennis DeYoung is making a comeback or something? Anyway, winners included David Hasselhoff (Big Comeback), Britney Spears (Big Mama), Stephen Colbert (Big Breakthrough), Janelle Pierzina (Big Reality Star, Big Brother All-Stars), Katharine McPhee (Big IT Girl), Kiefer Sutherland (Big TV Star).

Witnesses to the accident said that he may have been drinking and the Beverly Hills Police said the actor displayed “symptoms of alcohol intoxication.” Garrison suffered only minor injuries in the crash. David Letterman CBS just extended David Letterman’s contract through 2010 for hosting duties of The Late Show with David Letterman. “I’m thrilled to be continuing on at CBS,” Letterman said in a statement.  “At my age, you really don’t want to have to learn a new commute.” A great day for Letterman fans, indeed. This will extend his hosting tour beyond competitor Jay Leno, who is planning to leave The Tonight Show in 2009 (passing duties on to Conan O’Brien).

Letterman has been at the hosting job for some time—and will celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Late Show in February. He began his tenure at NBC’s Late Night with David Letterman, leaving NBC in 1993 and making the move to CBS and Late Show. “Thirteen years ago, David Letterman put CBS late night on the map, and in the process, became one of the defining icons of our Network,” said CBS honcho Les Moonves. “His presence on our air is an ongoing source of pride, and the creativity and imagination that the Late Show puts forth every night is an ongoing display of the highest quality entertainment. We are truly honored that one of the most revered and talented entertainers of our time will continue to call CBS ‘home.’”

30 Rock OK, I can stop gushing about 30 Rock, NBC’s comedic behind-the-scenes look at a sketch show. NBC has finally given it the full season order. This comes the day after a colossal breakthrough in ratings, having moved to Thursday nights. 30 Rock now is the fourth show in a tight lineup on NBC—My Name is Earl, The Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock provide the return of that “Must See” feeling. And must see they did. 30 Rock, which has not been much of a ratings winner, saw a dramatic 25% increase in viewers (6.6 million viewers overall) when it followed the aforementioned block of shows. Kevin Reilly, President, NBC Entertainment, said, “In 30 Rock, Tina Fey and Lorne Michaels, along with stars Alec Baldwin and Tracy Morgan, have the goods with this excellent comedy. We look forward to future episodes of this bright new show, which is right on-brand for our Thursday-night comedy block.” I know a lot of you out there watch Grey’s Anatomy, but the NBC Thursday night schedule provides a solid two hours of comedy gold.
