On Gear Live: Apple’s $400,000,000 Secret to Saving the Planet

Peter PetrelliAt the risk of spoiling part of last night’s episode of , I felt like talking about it a bit, because this was a pivotal moment in the series that hints at many things to come. Namely, for the first time, Peter was able to use a power acquired from someone else, without being in the vicinity of the person.

So how did it happen? As we saw in the show last night, Mr. Invisible threw Peter off of the roof of The Artist’s building, thinking that it would force Peter to fly. Instead, something more spectacular happened ... Peter crashed into the roof of a taxi. Peter explained his miraculous survival as having thought of The Cheerleader just before he landed, but I think there was more to it.

Justin TimberlakeJustin Timberlake is a kids’ favorite, so why not let the singer/actor host Nickelodeon’s Kids’ Choice Awards? This is the 20th installment of the awards program, which lets kids pick their faves among movies, TV, music, sports, books, and video games. Wow, 20 years doesn’t even seem right. Has Nickelodeon even been around that long? At any rate, Timberlake, who has won the Kids’ Choice award for Best Burp twice, will get to show his worth as host. Will there be burping? You can probably bet on it. Timberlake is also nominated for best male singer. “While honoring kids’ opinions, it taps into the kid in all of us,” said Timberlake about the event. The Kids’ Choice Awards airs on March 31st—kids can vote online for their favorites beginning on March 5th.

Lost If you’ve felt a void in your life for a couple of months, you’re about to feel whole again. That’s right, Lost returns this week—and get ready for a no-repeat ride all the way until the season finale. Season three of Lost had a huge split, in an effort to produce two chunks of the show, without reruns. To cushion the loss, ABC brought us Day Break, which was promptly canceled after just a handful of episodes. So we sat. And waited. And read our fill of Lost rumors and goodies online. And here we are—finally, February has arrived and we are ready to get this ball rolling again. While the loss was tough, and many were disappointed by the “mini-season” approach, fans of the series can now be assured that their beloved island drama is back and won’t lose any momentum until the season closes. Don’t miss it—this go around, Lost will air 16 new episodes on Wednesdays at 10:00 p.m.

Andy Richter These are two of the shows you may have heard some buzz about in the fall, then they swiftly fell off of the radar. The Black Donnellys, a crime drama, will premiere on NBC on March 5 at 10:00 p.m. This mid-season entry will knock Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip off of the schedule, with no clear indication about when it will return. Donnellys will have the lead-in of Heroes, so it’s not too shabby a place to be.

Andy Barker, P.I., the new comedy starring Andy Richter, will begin on March 15th at 9:30 p.m. (also on NBC). So, that will replace 30 Rock mid-season. As much as I’m looking forward to seeing Andy Richter, I will certainly be mourning the absence of 30 Rock. That show just continues to get better each week. Fear not, however, 30 Rock will return to its Thursday time beginning on April 19th.

Last Comic Standing NBC announced that a fifth season of the stand-up talent show, Last Comic Standing, will air this summer. Thankfully, last season’s host, Anthony Clark, has been replaced. I don’t have anything against Clark, but he didn’t seem to add much to the show and had a frightful amount of makeup on. This go-around will have comedian Bill Bellamy taking on the hosting duties, plus the show goes international. So, no longer will auditions be held solely in American cities—we’ll also see what kind of comedy chops there are during auditions in London, Sydney, and Montreal. Former Last Comic Standing contestants, Alonzo Bodden, Kathleen Madigan, and Ant will be on hand to scout out talent in the audition cities. No word yet on when exactly the series will air or if the contestants will be living together.

Julie Chen Bring it on Julie Chen! Yep, the eighth installment of Big Brother has been given the greenlight. While I’ve grown a bit tired of the series, due largely to the dud that was the All-Stars edition, I still think this show can be fun. With the promise of a fresh cast and a silly reality show that airs in the middle of the summer doldrums, Big Brother proves a nice diversion from the other summer programming. Will viewers tune in though? If they’re like me, probably not. My biggest beef with this show is the amount of time it consumes. You have to watch it when it airs 2 or 3 nights, plus, if you’re geeky like me, you suck up half of your life looking for recaps of the live feeds. Don’t get me wrong, I do have a life! So, you know the drill, contestants sharing a house and voting off someone each week, all while their every move is caught on camera. More details to come as summer approaches.

Ed HelmsFor those of you, like myself, who may have thought that Ed Helms’ character on The Office was on his way out, think again. It would seem that, after he annoyed even Michael Scott (Steve Carell), that the end was near. Helms has done a particularly fine job as the suck-up Andy Bernard, that it makes you feel downright embarrassed for the guy. His status on the show has just been bumped to a regular cast member. Both Helms and Rashida Jones (Karen) joined The Office this season. Karen, who moved to the Scranton branch mainly to follow Jim, will likely have some tougher times ahead now that Jim has admitted he has feelings for Pam. Rashida Jones is still just a recurring character, so we’ll have to see if she decides to move back to Stamford.

Helms worked with Steve Carell on The Daily Show and will soon appear on screen with Carell in Evan Almighty.

Mark Burnett Here’s a fun development from Mark Burnett—a game show that tests people on 5th grade level questions. The Fox show, titled, Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? (clever) begins in late February and will run for six episodes.
Viewers anxious to discover if they are, in fact, smarter than a 5th grader will be able to find out on FOX starting at the end of February. The air time will be a bit funky, with episodes airing at 9:30 p.m. on February 27th and 28th. The show will most likely get a big bump since the episodes will follow American Idol. March 1st and 8th promises an hour-long episode each night—yet again following Idol‘s lead. Then, on March 15th and 22nd, the game show will be at 8:00 p.m. Do you think you’re smarter than a 5th grader? You may think so, but consider that most of us emptied 5th grade geography, history, math, and science out of our brains long ago. The questions come from 1st through 5th grade text books, and be assured that the contestants can ask for help—from actual grade school kids.

MADtv logoMADtv, which I didn’t even realize was still on, has recruited their latest cast member through YouTube. Lisa Donovan, who moved to Los Angeles to become an actor, previously auctioned for MADtv, but didn’t get the gig. She started her own production company, Zappin Productions, where she created a number of short films. Her videos are available on YouTube, and were popular enough to be featured on the home page. MADtv‘s casting director found the videos on YouTube and asked Donovan to audition again. This time, she nailed it. A Cinderella story in the making—get your stuff up on YouTube and see if it doesn’t land you a dream job. MADtv airs on Saturdays at 11:00 p.m. Donovan can be seen beginning on February 17th.

television This one floored me. Is the Super Bowl so important an event that people need to rush out and buy a bigger TV? Does a larger TV enhance the action of the big game? Or is this just an excuse for people to upgrade their screen size?

According to a survey by the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association (RAMA), approximately 2.5 million consumers are planning on making an upgrade for Super Bowl Sunday. This number is an increase over the 1.7 million who planned to buy a new TV last year. To put it into perspective, over 100 million people are expected to watch the Super Bowl. Why buy a newer, bigger screen? Why, to have only the best Super Bowl party. Ever. To support the buying spree, retailers, such as Best Buy, are offering interest-free financing and delivery in time for the big game. So hurry on out folks and pick up a giant flat-panel for yourself.
